On this solemnity we celebrate the saints. Saints are people who seem to have transcended our world, even in their lifetimes. Stories of their miracles, ascetic practices, and martyrdoms abound. Because of these extraordinary details, it is easy to put our saints in heaven in some category other than our day-to-day experience. But it would be a mistake to do so. In the Gospel for All Saint s Day we hear the Beatitudes: Jesus descriptions about a holy, saintly life. Meekness, faithfulness, righteousness, peacefulness, and cleanliness of heart are virtues we can all strive for in our lives, and we honor our saints for having done so in theirs. Each honored saint in heaven lived a life like you and I, but through God s grace lived it to the fullest. May they show us the way to the everyday holiness that will lead us into their company in heaven. Living a Life of Humility In today s Gospel, the parable of Jesus addresses attitude in prayer. In contrasting the prayer of the Pharisee with the prayer of the tax collector, Jesus teaches his disciples to pray in humility before God. Jesus again surprises his listeners by showing the tax collector as the example of faith, rather than the Pharisee. Remember that Pharisees were members of a sect of Judaism active in Jesus' time. They taught an oral interpretation of the Law of Moses as the basis for Jewish piety. If anyone would be a model for prayer, a Pharisee was a likely candidate. In contrast, Jesus offers the tax collector as a model for prayer. Tax collectors were collaborators with the Roman authorities in a system that allowed the tax collectors to line their own pockets by charging in excess of the defined taxes. Yet, in this parable, Jesus offers the humility of the tax collector as a model for the prayer of a disciple. The parable reminds us that when we pray, we must remember our need for God in our lives. If we are too full of ourselves, there is too little room for God's grace to work in us. DIA DE LOS MUERTOS / DAY OF THE DEAD This is a very important feast in the life of Hispanics, especially those of Mexican heritage. It is born out of the popular Christian religious traditions and reveals the role that death plays in life and life plays in death. The Religious Education Program will be hosting Día de los Muertos, and will create a Community Altar in honor of our deceased loved ones. It is customary to leave those who have preceded us in death small gifts of items they would have enjoyed during their lifetime, thus nurturing the memory of their lives and letting them know that they remain a part of our lives today. We invite you to bring pictures and other mementos of your deceased family members to place on the altar by Wednesday, October 30th. 4 Page 5 The Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 27, 2013 Kid s Corner The Saints Club "I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting!" - The Apostles' Creed One of the most important actions we can take to reach the goal of 'life everlasting' is to join a group of great people, a very special club if you like, called "The Communion of Saints." This club is the largest and most exciting association we can belong to, not just on earth but anywhere in the entire universe and all other universes beyond. This club includes the most amazing variety of members; it includes those living on earth, those waiting in purgatory and those who have already lived here! Those who have already lived seem to have a bit more time to help us in our living. Who are they? There are some who quietly keep the club running and their names are not often known, except perhaps to immediate family. Then there are others who have done the most unbelievable things: some were so good at aiming at eternal life while on earth that they just simply slipped into it, without leaving even their bodies behind, one such fellow is Enoch "the friend of God" whom we read about in the Book of Genesis; then there is Mary of Nazareth - she did such a good job of it that we know that she was taken to heaven body and soul. There are countless others like Padre Pio, St. Francis of Assisi and St. Therese of Lisieux who are members of this club. Now, this great club of saints is the one to which we get full membership when we are Confirmed in the Church. All these saints - and there are hundreds and hundreds more - are all at our disposal. We need to make friends with them. We need to know who they are, where they come from, what their particular talents are and so on. After all, we are normally not too keen to tell strangers about our troubles. Once we know who these people are, then it is much easier to trust them with out friendship and our worries. Have an adventure exploring the interesting lives of the saints and brushing up on the family history of the Catholic Church. Then, with all the help that the great "Communion of Saints" can give you, enjoy becoming full members of the greatest club ever. All Soul s Day Saturday, November 2nd The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, or All Soul s Day, is a moment in the Church s calendar to recognize God s enduring love that binds us all together. As we learn from Saint Paul in the First Letter to the Corinthians, love is eternal: it endures when all else passes away. This eternal love compels us to keep our beloved dead in mind on this day. Out of love, we recall and pray for our beloved dead, hoping and trusting in God s mercy to welcome them into the glory of heaven. May all of God s people, past and present, continue to share in God s love now and forever. The Wisdom of Saints on Prayer The most consistent theme of saints utterances on prayer is simplicity and striving toward loving union with God in spite of all the complications and distractions that inevitably rise. This is as true of the active worldly saints as of those whose primary vocation is prayer and contemplation. The saints give a wealth of sometimes conflicting advice on how to pray, reflecting different needs, temperaments, and vocations. The contemplatives, like John of the Cross and the anonymous author of the Cloud of Unknowing, are more concerned with the nuances of the soul s movement through different stages on the journey toward union with God than are God s soldiers in the world, like Ignatius of Loyola or Anthony Mary Caret, who just give us the best advice they can on how to stay close to God in the midst of tumult and distraction, based on their own amazing experience. Look to the saints to help you find the prayer style that best suits you. For me, prayer means launching out of the heart towards God; it means lifting one s eyes, quite simply, to Heaven, a cry of grateful love from the crest of joy or the trough of despair; it s a vast, supernatural force which opens out my heart, and binds me closer to Jesus.
