2 Page 2 The Fourth Sunday of Easter The Good Shepherd The most comforting of the Psalms begins with the line: The Lord is my shepherd. It ends with this line: Goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. Goodness and mercy, in the person of the good Shepherd, have to follow, because the shepherd is heading out to seek the lost sheep. The sheep is leading the way, and that is why the sheep is lost. The shepherd is the one who knows the way and ought to be leading, but he has to follow because the sheep got out ahead of the shepherd and so got astray. In today s Gospel Reading, Jesus says that his sheep follow him. Those who belong to him know his voice and so they are willing to follow him and let him lead the way. Of course, a sheep doesn t know the voice of the shepherd unless it knows the shepherd. The difference, then, between being a lost sheep who has to be followed by the Shepherd and being a faithful sheep who is led by the Shepherd is a matter of knowing the Shepherd. Now the Shepherd is a person. And knowing a person is a matter of personal relationship, with all the risks and vulnerabilities that personal relationship entails. So a faithful sheep is in a personal relationship with its Shepherd and loves him. That is why that sheep knows the voice of the Shepherd and follows him. Here is the good news, then. Whether a person is faithful or lost, he will be surrounded by the love of the good Shepherd. Either the Shepherd will lead him, or the Shepherd will follow after him to find him when he is astray. May 7, 2017 Help Complete the Shrine to Mary, Our Mother: The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC Special The Bishops of the United States Collection approved a special collection for Next the completion of Our National Weekend Shrine to Mary, our mother. Your prayerful and financial support will not only adorn this Crowning Jewel and complete Mary s Shrine, but will also leave a lasting legacy for generations to come in this living monument to our Catholic Faith and heritage that is America s Catholic Church. The Basilica is our nations preeminent Marian shrine dedicated to the patroness of the United States, the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title of the Immaculate Conception. Nearly a century in the making, Mary s Shrine, as it s called, has been a work in progress since the laying of its foundation stone in As its one hundredth anniversary approaches, a national effort is underway to complete this great monument to our faith with the mosaic ornamentation of the Trinity Dome. Contributions toward the completion of the Trinity Dome offer the faithful a unique opportunity to leave a lasting legacy by honoring their Catholic heritage and entrusting themselves and their families to the Mother of God. Your generous support is greatly appreciated. We join together next week with all the parishes in the Diocese of San Diego, along with all the parishes of the United States to support the completion of the Trinity Dome. There are special envelopes in the pews for this collection. Take one home today and return it in next week s collection. As we will be celebrating Mother s next weekend on Mother s Day, let us also celebrate Mary, Our Mother, by making a donation to complete her shrine. And so St. Patrick s prayer is right: Christ before me, Christ behind me. And, either way, Christ with me. Eleonore Stump, Professor of Philosophy, Saint Louis University Christ's resurrection changes all of human history the power of death is at an end and we can live in hope. During the 50 days of Easter (until Pentecost), we journey with the first Christians as they come to terms with this fantastic account of Christ's coming back from the dead. Easter invites us to celebrate, connect our story of faith to that of the church, and to pass that on to others. Visit our website for a link to see the project in progress.

5 Page 5 The Fourth Sunday of Easter WORLD DAY OF PRAY FOR VOCATIONS World Day of Prayer for Vocations is observed on Sunday, May 7th, also known as "Good Shepherd Sunday." The purpose of this day is to publically fulfill the Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). Please pray that young men and women hear and respond generously to the Lord's call to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, societies of apostolic life or secular institutes. You can find many resources to promote a culture of vocations on the US Catholic Bishops Vocations webpage: 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima May 13, 1917 May 13, 2017 A hundred years ago, on the 13th day of every month from May through October of 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three children near Fatima in Portugal, bringing them an urgent message, calling for repentance and prayer, a message that has no less urgency today. Among all the Church-approved Marian apparitions, Our Lady of Fatima is one of the most popular, especially among the Successors of St. Peter. On May 13, 1946, Pope Pius XII crowned the original statue of Our Lady of Fatima as Queen of the World. Blessed Pope Paul VI visited the Fatima Shrine on the 50th Anniversary, May 13, Both St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI made pilgrimages there; and Pope Francis will do the same, this month, to celebrate the centenary of the first apparition. The Holy Father also will be canonizing the two youngest visionaries, Francisco and his sister, Jacinta Marto. They are the Portuguese brother and sister, two of the three shepherd children who, along with their cousin Lucia Santos, saw the apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima exactly one hundred years ago. Unlike Lucia, who became a nun and lived to the age of 98, Francisco and Jacinta died in childhood, aged just 9 and 11, as a result of the great flu epidemic that swept through Europe in On May 13th of the year 2000, the two of them were beatified by Pope John Paul II during his pastoral visit to Portugal. Meanwhile the case for Sr. Lucia s beatification concluded its first phase in Portugal earlier this year and is now being examined at the Congregation for the Causes of Saints at the Vatican. Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta May 7, 2017 Get ready for St. Didacus Church s 5th Annual KERMES! Sunday, May 21st 8:00am-2:00pm Get ready to buy great Mexican food like: tamales, tacos, corn, nachos and more! And get ready to play games and win raffle prizes!
