Parishioners dressed as Joseph and Mary knock on the doors of houses around the parish neighborhood. As the group processes through the neighborhood a traditional song is sung. At last, Mary and Joseph are welcomed and we conclude the evening back at the Parish Hall for hot chocolate, bread and several piñatas! This is a fun family event and everyone is welcome dress warmly! MAKING A DIFFERENCE DURING ADVENT LAST DAY TO BRING YOUR ITEMS IS WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19TH There is so much need this Advent that we will be collecting items and toys for several causes. Your donations will go directly to those in need. For Fr. Pat Murphy and the Casa del Migrantes in Tijuana we are collecting: MEN s socks, MEN s underwear, MEN s deodorant. For families in Ejido El Hongo, near Tecate, Orfanatorio Esperanza de la Niñez (Hope of Childhood) and Orphanage, Rancho Nazareth, in Tecate, we will be collecting unwrapped toys for boys and girls, all ages, as well as non-perishable food items. Please bring your items to the Parish Office by Wednesday, December 19th. Don t miss this year s PASTORELA This weekend! Sunday, December 16th 1pm in the Parish Hall Oscar and the Spanish Choir have been rehearsing since September to bring you this year s Pastorela. Everyone is invited to this Spanish play. It is the age-old story of good versus evil and is fun for the whole family. Even if you don t understand Spanish, you ll enjoy this fun event. They will be selling Mexican food before the performance. Today begins our nine-day preparation for the celebration of Christmas. Some may prefer to attend daily Mass or just say a special prayer. If you want to really prepare yourself more, the Gospel this Sunday is definitely a good guide. John the Baptist proclaims the urgency for repentance and conversion. There are two types of conversions needed to conform oneself for the coming of the Messiah. First is spiritual conversion. This conversion means recognizing the power of God over all our lives. Absolutely nothing happens, significant or insignificant, without God knowing or permitting it. I know we still have plenty of whys about God. The second type of conversion might help us understand some of these whys. John the Baptist proclaims a moral conversion to happen in every person. Spiritual conversion is conviction and moral conversion is action. Recall, Jesus prayed while dying on the cross, Father, forgive them for they know not what they do. The people responsible for the suffering both needed spiritual and moral conversion. We too should continue to pray for a deeper conversion both spiritually and morally. On the Third Sunday of Advent, we affirm once again our resolve to lead good lives being generous, kind, loving and compassionate. Fr. Our parish has been asked to provide lunch for a group of asylum seekers who are here legally and registered with ICE. They are awaiting a court date and are counting on the generosity of parishes around the diocese. We will work with San Diego Organizing Project, a faith-based organization, where congregations of various denominations come together to volunteer. They are asking that we prepare lunch for people here at our parish then deliver and serve it at a facility. More details will follow as they become available. The St. Didacus Mental Health Ministry Invites you to a Care Prayer Support Gathering Sunday, January 6 th 7:30pm-8:15pm In the Parish Hall The gathering will include: Opening Prayer, Spiritual Reading, group sharing/petitions/comments, an Our Father and Closing Prayer. They will also have information on various agencies that can help with whatever you or a loved one are encountering - be it depression, anxiety, grief, addiction, stress, or other struggles. It is NOT a therapy session (they are not trained to do that). It is more a chance to be with others, share, listen with empathy, learn about available resources and pray together. All are welcome. This holiday season take the time to make your home a healthier environment or encourage your neighbors, friends, co-workers or clients to do so. Catholic Charities, Diocese of San Diego is funded for the Smoke-Free Homes project through a grant from the California Department of Public Health. This initiative encourages families to make the interior areas of their home tobacco-free to protect nonsmokers and children from secondhand smoke exposure. The Smoke-Free Homes program is open to one participant per household, 18 years of age or older who resides in a detached home, apartment or condo unit, RV, mobile home or other housing structure. There are no required office, home visits or classes to attend and no income requirements for participation. Smokers or nonsmokers can enroll as long as they meet other eligibility requirements. Participants can receive up to $50 in merchandise cards, their choice of Staples, Starbucks, Subway or Office Depot for their time and participation. It is a festive addition to the parish grounds and we look forward to watching it grow through the years! An Advent Prayer It is getting more and more difficult, Lord, for us to keep our attention on the holy things. Our lives are caught up in the planning, parties, gifts, and other such things. We get side-tracked too easily and exhausted, we fall into restless sleep. The cries of those in need abound and we are overwhelmed by the need. Too often we turn a deaf ear because we feel we just can't meet all the needs that are presented to us. Heal our hearts and spirits, Lord. Help us understand that you do not ask us to heal everything but rather to find a simple way in which we might lighten someone else's burden, as you have lightened our lives. You have brought hope and peace to us. Now cause us to rejoice in the wondrous things that you have done. Teach us to use our gifts for the common good, and that in helping, we find great and abundant joy. In Jesus' Name, we pray. AMEN. December 16, 2018 The third Sunday of Advent is also called Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete is a Latin word that means rejoice. This name is taken from the entrance antiphon for Sunday's Mass, which is also echoed in today's second reading from the Paul's letter to the Philippians. We mark this Sunday by lighting the pink candle on our Advent wreath. It is a reminder that the Advent season is a season of joy because our salvation is already at hand. One of the best ways to prepare to meet the Lord at Christmas is to forsake our sins, reconcile with God, and seek His forgiveness. We do this through the beautiful sacrament of reconciliation. If you missed our Advent Penance Service, you are invited to come to our regularly scheduled Confessions held each Saturday beginning at 3:30pm. These families, many with small children, have traveled long distances to flee extreme conditions that threaten their lives. They have received permission to remain in the U.S. legally while awaiting the outcome of their application for asylum.
