2 Page 2 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe This final Sunday of the church year, the Feast of Christ the King, is the day when we are invited to commemorate His sovereignty over all men, women and children. Jesus Christ has come. Jesus Christ is coming. Jesus Christ will come again. Jesus Christ is Lord of All. No sooner than we have celebrated the last Sunday of the Year, the feast of Christ the King, we will celebrate the First Sunday of Advent, and begin the time of preparation for the great Feast of the Nativity of Our Savior. We are moving forward and toward His loving return. The Church, to use the beautiful imagery of the early Christian fathers, was birthed from the wounded side of the Savior on the Cross at Calvary's hill. We are now being recreated in and through Him. We have been espoused to Him forever. He is the bridegroom and we are the bride. He will return for us in the great culmination of all time and establish the eternal kingdom. Our Catholic liturgical year follows a rhythmic cycle which points us toward beginnings and ends. In doing so, it emphasizes important truths that can only be grasped through faith. This Sunday, the Feast of Christ the King, is the last Sunday in the Church year. Our Catholic faith and its Liturgical practices proclaim to a world hungry for meaning that Jesus Christ is the "Alpha," (the first letter of the Greek alphabet) and the "Omega" (the last letter), the beginning and the end. He is the Giver, the Governor and the fulfillment of all time. In Him the whole world is being made new and every end becomes a beginning, for those with the greatest treasure, living faith. Blessing of the Parish Advent Wreath Advent begins next weekend with the Blessing of our Parish Advent Wreath at the 5:00pm Mass on Saturday, December 1st. You are invited to bring your Advent candles to this Mass to have them blessed. November 25, 2018 A story is told that during the Second World War a group of soldiers came to a little Italian village which was heavily devastated. They stumbled upon a statue of Christ lying on the ground broken into several pieces. The soldiers tried to repair the statue as best they could and placed it on the pedestal. But the two pieces they could not find were the hands of the statue. Finally, one of the soldiers made a note and placed it near the statue. The note read: I have no other hands but yours. Today, as we celebrate the feast of Christ the King we read John s account of Jesus having been interrogated by Pilate. Yes, Jesus is a king. But his kingdom is different from all the kings and kingdoms in this world. Jesus is the King of the Kingdom of God. Many times Jesus spoke of the kingdom of God as the central theme of his ministry. Christ is king and his kingdom is here and now. Today we once again claim his Kingship in our lives. We pledge our allegiance to the Lord and strive to be His hands and feet, becoming instruments of his love and mercy for others. Fr. Rick Don t forget about our parish fundraiser next Saturday! Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego is raising funds to help migrant families being released by immigration authorities in our region. These families, many with small children, have traveled long distances to flee extreme conditions that threaten their lives. They have received permission to remain in the U.S. legally while awaiting the outcome of their application for asylum. Catholic Charities is raising funds to help them to travel to unite with family members in the U.S. Donations may be made through this site: Sharejourneysd.org/families. Attention All Parish Families! Mark your calendars for our family Advent event: Wednesday, December 5th 5:30pm-7:00pm in the Parish Hall Do you remember how much fun we had last year at our Keepsake Christmas event? We ve planned another fun family event that will help you leave all the busyness of the season behind and focus on the real reason for the season: Jesus! We do not bring God into time; He is the Creator of time. In the mystery of the Incarnation, the Eternal Word through whom the universe was created entered into time to re-create it from within!

5 Page 5 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe If you brought your child to the restroom during the Liturgy of the Word, you might walk away with one of two interpretations of Jesus as King. The first and second readings are bold and victorious. We see Christ coming on the clouds for the final judgment of heaven and earth. The Gospel sets a very different tone. Jesus is under arrest and facing death before Pontius Pilate. We know how this story will end. So if Christ is King, what does it mean? Is he a glorious conqueror or a suffering servant? My kingdom does not belong to this world. Here is the heart of Jesus reign. He is a king and his subjects are alive and well on earth but, ultimately, Jesus kingdom transcends our earthly concepts of power. Jesus faced down the temptation of a solely earthly kingship. At the close of his 40 days in the desert, the devil offered him the kingdoms of the world. Jesus only had to sacrifice his heavenly values and worship Satan. The same temptations to distort the kingship of Christ are present to us today. Jesus invitation also endures. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. It is important for us to belong to the full truth of Christ s kingdom. First, our own hearts must be transformed. Our own rebellions in favor of selfishness and against holiness must be conquered by God s grace. Second, we must work to transform the world as best we can in our own corner of it. Like Jesus shows us by his life and death, this doesn t mean domination. It means service, sacrifice, respect, and love. Our lives must testify to the truth of Jesus Christ, who lays down his life for his people. That is the true beauty of Christ the King! Cycles of Faith The Church really IS the Mystical Body of the Risen Christ. That Body is inseparably joined to the Head. Jesus Christ is alive, he has been raised, and he continues His redemptive mission now through the Church, of which we are members. As we choose to actually live our lives liturgically, not just go through the motions, we can move through life in the flow of the liturgical calendar. We can experience the deeper mystery and meaning of life, now made New in Jesus Christ, the One who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. (John 14:6,7) Jesus Christ is King! Jesus Christ is meant to become the Lord of our whole lives, and inform the very pattern of how we live them. May God, who fills the hungry with good things, show us the path to walk, in peace and harmony with all creation. Amen November 25, 2018 What is the role of Catholics in society? The role of the Church in the world has taken different forms over time, but the theme is the same. Be disciples in it! As the lay faithful that is, not vowed priest or religious we are called to live and love in the circumstances of our daily lives. St. John Paul II wrote a document about the laity. In it he wrote, In their situation in the world God manifests His plan and communicates to them their particular vocation of seeking the Kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and by ordering them according to the plan of God (On the Lay Members of Christ s Faithful, 15). God wants us in the hospitals, the board rooms, the law offices, the food pantries, and the little league games! We are to engage in the affairs of the world. But when we re there, we should live the plan of God. We need to respect those around us, engage in just business and legal practices, and love our children. We should care for the earth, use our money wisely, and get to know our neighbors. We must advocate for social policies that respect human dignity and human freedom. No matter our state in life, we are invited to build the kingdom of God! HEALING MASS AT HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit Catholic Church located at th St., San Diego, CA will be hosting a Healing Mass followed by Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament on Monday, November 26, 2018 Service begins at 7:00 PM. Celebrant: Fr. James Boyd. Everyone is invited to come and experience the healing power of the Holy Spirit! P.
