2 Page 2 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord April 9, 2017 During Holy Week each year, we enter most deeply into the foundation of our Christian faith the mystery of the death and resurrection of Jesus. The Season of Lent ends on Thursday of Holy Week. Then the Church remembers the death and resurrection of Jesus during the Easter Triduum. The Easter Triduum begins on Holy Thursday with the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper, is continued through Good Friday with the celebration of the Passion of the Lord and on Holy Saturday, reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil, and concludes with Masses on Easter Sunday. These three days are the most important time of the Church year. Please join us for these holiest of days. Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord's Supper On Holy Thursday we remember the Last Supper and that Jesus gave himself in the Eucharist. We recall that Jesus chose his apostles to serve and lead the Church. Remembering that Jesus washed the apostle s feet at the Last Supper, the priest washes the feet of members of the congregation. The evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday is a beautiful and joyful celebration. Because Holy Thursday is a feast day of the Blessed Sacrament, there is a procession of the Eucharist after the Mass to an altar of repose set up in the Parish Hall. Thursday, April 13 (No morning Mass this day) 7:00pm Mass of the Lord s Supper Eucharistic Adoration 8:00pm-9:00pm in the Parish Hall Good Friday of the Passion of the Lord On Good Friday we remember the death of Jesus. According to an ancient custom, Mass is not celebrated on this day or before the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. The celebration of the Lord's passion and death takes place in the afternoon. There are three parts to the liturgy of the day: the Liturgy of the Word; the Veneration of the Cross; and Holy Communion with Hosts consecrated on Holy Thursday. Friday, April 14 (No morning Mass this day) 12:00pm Stations of the Cross English and 1:00pm Stations of the Cross Spanish 3:00pm Passion of the Lord English 7:00pm Passion of the Lord Spanish Holy Saturday Easter Vigil On Holy Saturday the Church meditates on the suffering and death of Jesus. Then the Church gathers to celebrate the Easter Vigil. Our celebration of the Easter Vigil takes place at 8pm and begins with a gathering on the Church steps around the fire. Saturday, April 15 (No confessions, adoration or 5pm Mass this day) 8:00pm Bilingual Mass Easter Sunday Join us as we celebrate the joy of the risen Lord! The Lord is truly risen, alleluia! Every day we are presented with opportunities to love our neighbor and help him carry his cross. These opportunities aren t usually big events, they are usually ordinary occurrences like helping someone carry their groceries or holding the door open for them. The key is putting the other person s needs before our own and not expecting anything in return. Through his perfect sacrifice of love on the cross, Jesus won forgiveness for our sins and defeated the power of sin and evil. By so doing, Jesus transformed the cross from an instrument of death into the tree of life and source of our salvation. Lent Penance Services Tuesday, April 11th, Blessed Sacrament at 7pm Saturday, April 15th, St. Patrick at 11am. No Penance Service, confession only. Letting God Be God Branches of palm, olive, or sometimes even budding willow, are ancient symbols of victory and hope, as well as of new life. The procession celebrating Jesus entry into Jerusalem overflowed with praise and excitement, as onlookers waved these triumphant branches and proclaimed their blessings. Yet in a few days, they will cry Crucify him! The crowd expected a liberating leader, the Messiah, to free them from Roman oppression. Jesus instead takes up his Cross and invites us to do the same. Through his Death and Resurrection he is indeed a liberator, but from death and sin, not from Rome. But unable to see past their need, the crowd s disappointment turns into anger and a death order. As we enter Holy Week, Palm Sunday teaches us to let God be God, and to trust in God s wisdom not only to meet but shatter and exceed our expectations. Sourcebook Pray this week for those of our parish who are in their final preparation to receive sacraments at the Easter Vigil. We have two infants to be baptized, eight catechumens and one candidate who have been preparing to receive the Sacraments of Christian Initiation. May their hearts be open to receive God s blessings!

5 Page 5 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord April 9, 2017 Turn away from sin. Turn toward the cross and to the hope of the resurrection. In this holiest of weeks, we hear again our call to wash one another s feet, to embrace the cross, and to know the hope of the resurrection. We take to heart Jesus way of self-giving love, and we commit ourselves anew to be people who share this love with others. As we enter into Holy Week, let us dedicate ourselves to the life of discipleship, which is expressed most deeply by sharing Christ s mercy, forgiveness, and love. TURN AWAY: During Lent, we have considered much from which we must turn away in order to live freely and fully as followers of Jesus Christ. Now it is time to make this a way of life. Make a firm commitment to turn away from sinfulness and to turn toward Christ with your life. TURN TOWARD: As you celebrate Triduum Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday/Easter Sunday be mindful of all being a disciple entails. Commit to wash others feet by offering service at home, work, parish, city, and world. Embrace the cross by offering up your suffering and relieving the suffering of others. Recognize the gift of salvation, which is offered through the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Live in the constant hope of the resurrection, in which all pain, trial, and death will be transformed into the joy of everlasting life in Christ Jesus, our Lord and Savior. --Copyright 2017 Leisa Anslinger Peter said to him in reply, Though all may have their faith in you shaken, mine will never be. Peter thought pretty highly of his faith. On the eve of Christ s death he professed, in essence, that he was more committed to Jesus than anyone else. And yet, we know how the story turns out: when put to the test in the moment that mattered, Peter began to curse and to swear, I do not know the man. On this Palm Sunday, we hear many stories of betrayal. The crowds, who once hailed Jesus with hosannas, will soon be chanting, Let him be crucified! Judas, who was counted among the closest companions of the Lord, turns him over to the chief priests for thirty pieces of silver. And Peter falls short in the moment of truth, and then went out and began to weep bitterly. Here in the hours before Christ faces crucifixion, he is surrounded by false friends. Just when he most needs the support, he is abandoned. No wonder he feels the suffering even of being forgotten by his Father while he hangs on the cross, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? What trials Jesus endured, not only physically but emotionally as well. It s easy to glaze over this as a story from the past that does not involve us. But in truth, Jesus suffered all of this for each one of us. He would have preferred things to go otherwise, but submitted to his Father s will because he knew it must come to pass in this way. Jesus passion and death took place in order to bring us salvation. So today, may we not be counted among his many betrayers, but may we be truly grateful for the gift of the cross and show it through a life of sincere faith. Cycles of Faith Thank you to all the groups who provided dinner on Friday nights during Lent: the Altar Society, the Parish Council, the Spanish Community, the School, and the Small Faith Groups. Thanks, also, to the Knights of Columbus for the great fish dinner. Thanks to the Choir for our awesome Taize prayer services. Thanks to the Mental Health Ministry, Marco Huizar & Denis Grasska for leading our Stations of the Cross during Lent. And thanks to Fr. Pat Murphy, Donna Allen and Elena Platas for our Lent talks. It was a blessing to walk through our Lenten journey as a parish community! The threes of Jesus life, death, and resurrection must be the threefold pattern of our own lives. We must hear his Gospel of Good News so that we can live it. We must die to self so that we can give to others the goodness, hope, and healing he has given us. We must open ourselves to the new Life he offers us so that we might join him in his everlasting reign. This passion Gospel is not only about the past, but also about the present and the future fullness of Life given us by the perfect and complete Three the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Palm Sunday begins the holiest of all the weeks in the year for those of us who profess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of David, our Savior. For us to enter into this week with the humility and devotion it deserves, we need to set aside all but the most necessary daily tasks and give ourselves wholeheartedly over to what we celebrate this week: Jesus final act of obedience his passing through suffering and death to risen Life. Good Friday Collection Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land. Your support helps the church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools and offer religious education. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. In these times of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace and join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. Please be generous. For more information about Christians in the Holy Land, visit -friday.

Hoy, Domingo de Ramos, es un día de gloria para el Señor, que es aclamado por el pueblo como mensajero de Dios: Bendito el que viene en nombre del Señor.
