1 GREETINGS! I hope everyone is having a great summer! We are excited to start a new year. We look forward to our time together and growing as Christian Women in our faith, prayer life and friendships! The event magnet lists our usual events. Stay tuned for some extra events to be planned and scheduled throughout the year. We will let you know as we plan them. THIS YEAR S PATRON: SAINT CLARE OF ASSISI Our Patron Saint is St. Clare of Assisi. (July 16, 1194 August 11, 1253). She was born into a wealthy Italian family but soon shunned her luxurious upbringing to embrace the life of piety and poverty. She was one of the first followers of Saint Francis of Assisi. She founded the Order of Poor Ladies, a religious order for women in the Franciscan tradition, and wrote their Rule of Life, the first set of monastic guidelines known to be written by a woman. Following her death, the order she founded was renamed in her honor as the Order of Saint Clare, commonly referred to today as the Poor Clares. Clare died in 1253 and was canonized two years later by Pope Alexander IV. Her feast day is August 11. We will learn much more about St. Clare this year. GENERAL MEETING AND INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS Tuesday, September 25 at 6:30PM in the Undercroft Social Space There will not be an Installation Mass and Reception at the end of August. We will have the Installation Ceremony at our first General Meeting of the year! All women of the parish, members and guests are welcome to attend. There will be registration for new members and dues will be collected. The new Executive Director of the Basilica Foundation, Colleen Cheney-Trawinski will speak for a few minutes and then we will have a short meeting, prayer and Installation of Officers. This will be followed by a presentation from Linda Hintze who will share pictures of her pilgrimage to Italy and tell us what she learned about St. Clare (our Patron Saint) while in Assisi. Please join us! Bring a friend and your favorite appetizer or dessert to share! DUES & REGISTRATION Membership dues remain at $ These dues help defray the cost of postage and other organizational items. Dues and registration will be collected at the September 25 general meeting. You may also mail your dues to the Basilica Parish Office or drop them in the collection basket at Mass. Please mark the envelope "Christian Women Membership Dues." 3 St. Clare of Assisi Deeply influenced by St. Francis of Assisi, Clare refused to marry, as her parents wished, and fled to the Portiuncula Chapel below Assisi. On March 18, 1212, Francis received her vows, and thus began the Second Order of St. Francis. Many joined Clare, including her mother and her sister St. Agnes of Assisi, and soon the Poor Clares were housed in the church and convent of San Damiano, near Assisi. Clare became abbess in Her great concern was to obtain a rule reflecting the spirit of Francis to replace the Benedictine rule that Cardinal Ugolino (later Pope Gregory IX) had adapted for her order. Two days before she died Pope Innocent IV approved her definitive rule. walls, fell back. On the second occasion, when a larger force besieged Assisi, Clare and her nuns Basilica of St. Clare in Assisi, Italy. fervently prayed for the Assisians, and a great storm dispersed the attackers. She was credited with other miracles in life and after death. In 1958 Pope Pius XII declared her patron of television, citing an incident during her last illness when she miraculously heard and saw the Christmas Midnight Mass in the Basilica of St. Francis on the far side of Assisi. Stained Glass Window of St. Clare in the Pope John Paul II Pavilion at the Basilica of St. Josaphat in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. San Damiano in Assisi, the first home of Clare s community of sisters. Besides its privilege of perfect poverty, forbidding the ownership of property even by the community, Clare s order is noted for its apostolic aim: she considered its penitential prayer life a spiritually vitalizing force for church and society. This view was shared by the popes and by the grateful citizens of Assisi, who credited Clare with twice saving their city from destruction. On the first occasion, Clare elevated the Consecrated Host at the refectory window, whereupon the Moorish allies of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, who were storming the St. Clare's tunic and mantle are on display at San Damiano.
4 SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON Thank you to all that attended our luncheon on June 2. Thank you to those who donated the beautiful raffle items and those that worked to make the event possible: Terry Proesel, Pegge Sytkowski, Julie Westbrook, Aubrey Rosing, Betty Reuter, Chris Ostopowicz, and Kathleen Johnston. of those scholarships to $1000. The committee really enjoyed reading the essays, and had a difficult time choosing! Interestingly, both winners this year did community service to help Veterans. Much gratitude and thanks to Terry Proesel. Just when you think she can t top the previous year, she goes ahead and does it! She has so much talent and creativity always coming up with the theme, invitations, centerpieces and delicious desserts! This year was all about the color pink and the theme was Vintage Cake Plates. Centerpieces were gorgeous flower cakes made of daisies & lilies, placed on Vintage cake plates and raffled. The front of the invitation wasn t just a picture.it was staged by her and Sharon Felten with real china and homemade desserts made by Terry. The tables had teacups filled with mints and candy coated Almonds and the desserts were Almond Cake with Raspberry filling and butter cream frosting and Strawberry Angel Delight Schaum Torte tarts. Everything was absolutely fabulous and so many people remarked that they always look forward to and enjoy the luncheon, but this year was their favorite! SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS Thank you to our Scholarship committee, Mary Connelly, Kate Helsper, and Susan Plewa for choosing our Scholarship winners. In the past we have had two $500 winners. This year we increased one Winner of $1,000 Scholarship: Theresa Tajnai, attending Wisconsin Lutheran College Theresa helped raise money for Veteran s Outreach of Wisconsin. This organization assists veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other mental and physical issues by building tiny houses for homeless veterans free of charge. From this experience she learned there are many veterans in her own community that are unable to maintain jobs and are forced into poverty and homelessness as a result. They often feel ashamed and would rather live on the streets than ask for help. Along with her sister and an organization representative, Theresa helped raise about $600 for the organization. She also participated in a charitable event at her college, sponsored by a group called Soles for Jesus by helping collect shoes that were donated to people in Africa. After the shoe drive, one boy who was interviewed said the shoe delivery was a God-send and that his community had been praying for shoes for a long time.
5 Last summer Theresa was active in helping young children in her 4-H Club, she helped assemble prize packets and was a judge for project judging day at the Racine County Fair. She volunteered for the 4-H Annual Pancake Breakfast, which raises money to send children to camp. Theresa continues to volunteer as a Tae Kwon Do instructor at the YMCA during her breaks from school. Her volunteer work has given her insights into the lives of others in the community and in the world and has helped her to become more compassionate and understanding. They painted for hours on end in the sun to help bring the house up to code. The work was physical: climbing up and down scaffolding, lifting paint brushes and rollers above their heads for hours, but it was worth it. Whenever Charles or his wife would check on them, their faces lit up as their house turned years younger before their eyes. Anna is now set on volunteering with organizations that focus on service projects whenever she has breaks from school. This experience was the first time in months that she genuinely felt Christ s light shine both inside and outside! Winner of $500 Scholarship: Anna Dannecker, attending Emerson College in Boston Back in high school while on retreat with her Confirmation class, long reflection led Anna to realize she wanted to live an active life of service. This past year, monthly Catholic Masses held by Newman Club on campus allowed her to lend her speaking talents to serving as a liturgical minister. She knew she wanted to do more, though. Her new schedule and environment, however, were distracting her from volunteering as much as her spirit desired. During her spring break she was given the opportunity to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity in Sacramento, California. Emerson s Newman Club provided for a small group of students to travel to Sacramento and repair houses for a week. Mainly, they worked on the house of a Korean War Veteran named Charles. They cleaned and painted his home s exterior. When most people picture Habitat for Humanity, they think of building houses from the ground up. Presently, she learned, Habitat does less house building and more renovating and repairs, because of increasing homelessness among the elderly. GOODBYE, FR. PAUL Congratulations, Fr. Paul Langevin! We will miss you, but know we will see you again! Holy Family Parish in Peoria is very blessed to have you as their new Pastor!
