B e a n, e d i t o r Volume 15, Issue 2 Winter 2013 A MESSAGE FROM THE STATE REGENT My Dear Catholic Daughters According to the calendar, spring is here. The weather however, feels more like winter. As we move forward to Spring I hope that you are all planning some special events and will keep the State Board informed. We are looking forward to the State Convention. We will have a new Slate of Officers after April 20-21, I have not made it out to some Courts for a visit to either a special function or a regular meeting, but plan to do so through the spring, summer and fall. I was able to attend both Concord s 100 th Anniversary and Keene s 95 th Anniversary. The Courts did a great job. Many of our longtime Catholic Daughters have passed on to their new life with Christ. They were very important to our Courts and we hope that we will never forget how much they gave to CDA over the years. Our Courts need to recruit new members to keep the Organization going. If each of you would ask just one person to come to a Court meeting, it might just double our numbers. Some of the Courts have brochures that they place in the back of their church to let others know when and where we meet and who to contact if they are interested. We need to go one step further and ask our Priest to let us publish what our groups do in their area as well as what National does. Catholic Daughters are a very important part of their parish and community. It is time we let people know who and what we are. We can no longer be a silent Organization. While we do not want to boast, we must let people know who we are. It is our time to shine as a positive Organization within the Church across the State and Country. We are The Catholic Daughters of the Americans and we do God s work wherever we are. One of the first public announcements Pope Francis made following his election by the Conclave was that he intended to pray to the Madonna "that she may watch all over Rome." We are especially proud to join in this prayer since The Blessed Mother is our patroness. The Holy Father also spoke of prayer in his first Apostolic Blessing ("Urbi et Orbi") when he said: "I ask you to pray to the Lord that he will bless me: the prayer of the people asking the blessing for their Bishop. Let us make, in silence, this prayer: your prayer over me." We answer his request and pray that the Lord will bless Pope Francis. More than 2 people per room is encouraged since it will drastically decrease the cost of each night s stay per person. REGISTRATION FEE $25 per person ROOM RATES $120 PER ROOM PER NIGHT MEALS for both Saturday AND Sunday..$75 per person (THE BEST DEAL!) (Includes Saturday breakfast, 2 lunches, and Saturday Banquet. 4 Page 4 The Story Of The Little Grape Stem Once upon a time there was a little grape stem. This stem was so glad to be alive. She drank water and minerals from the soil and grew and grew. She was young and strong and could manage quite well...all by herself. But then, the wind came and was curel, the rain came and was harsh, the snow came and was not one bit understanding; and the little grape vine suffered very much. She drooped, weak and suffering. It would be so easy to stop trying to grow, to stop trying to live even. And the grape stem felt poor! The winter was long, and the stem was very weary. But then the little grape stem heard a voice. It was another grape stem calling out to her, "Here, reach out...hang on to me." But the stem hesitated. What would this mean?. You see the little grape stem had always managed quite well on it's own...all by itself. But then, ever so cautiously, she reached out toward the other grape stem. "See I can help you", the other stem said. "Just wind your tendrils about me and I will help you lift your head." And... the little stem slowly trusted, then suddenly she could stand again. The wind came, and the rain, and the snow; but when it came, the little grape stem was clinging to many other stems. Although the stems were swayed by the wind, and frozen by the snow, they stood strongly united to each other. In their united strength, they could smile and grow. And then, one day the little stem looked down and saw a tiny stem swaying and frightened. Our little grape stem said "Here, hang on, I will help you." And the other tiny stem reached up to our grape stem and together the stems grew. Their leaves budded and finally, grapes formed; and the grapes fed many others. ~ Author Unknown Be the vine for others. 5 Volume 15, Issue 2 Page 5 MARY MACNEIL HONORED BY COURT MARGARET K. DESMOND FOR 80 YEARS OF MEMBERSHIP On February 20, 2013, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Margaret K. Desmond, #167 Concord, NH, honored Mary MacNeil for being a member of the Court for 80 years. Mary was introduced to Catholic Daughters by her mother. Prior to becoming a member of Court #167, Mary was President of The Catholic Daughters Junior Court. As a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Margaret K. Desmond, Court #167, Mary was instrumental in getting many things accomplished. She served as Regent, Vice-Regent, Treasurer, and Recording Secretary. As a member of Christ the King Parish, Mary served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Eucharist and is still a member of the Parish's Finance Committee. Rev. Richard Roberge, Pastor of Christ the King Parish and Chaplain for Catholic Daughters, Court #167 presented Mary with a framed Certificate of Appreciation for her dedication to the Parish and Catholic Daughters. Regent Kathleen Moulis presented Mary with a beautiful bouquet of Red Roses, a sweater with the Catholic Daughters emblem and several festive balloons including one that said "You are special". A reception in Mary's honor followed. A cake beautifully decorated with purple and gold frosting with a cross was the centerpiece. (Purple and gold are the Colors of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.) Mary was asked what her reply would be if a woman told her that she was interested in joining The Catholic Daughters.
