Co-Chairperson of ICDA-US Misson Fund Paul Blicharz 1) Could you share with us about your family? My name is Paul Blicharz. I was born Deaf and am third of eight children of Walter/Elda Blicharz. I was first one to be born in California. The first two siblings (brothers) were born in Detroit, MI. My oldest sibling is deaf, Carl. I enrolled California School for the Deaf in Berkeley in 1955 and graduated in Then I enrolled Gallaudet University and graduated with Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in I married my late wife, Linda D'Antoni, who was Deaf, in She passed away on May 3, We have a son, William, 34 in May, and a daughter, Brenda, 32. William has a wife, Jessi and they have a son, Tyler, 6 in May, and a daughter Abigail, 4 in April. I am Life Member of ICDA.

2) As you are the Co-Chairperson of ICDA-US Mission Fund, what are the goals of this fund? ICDA-US Mission Fund has a Mission Statement & Guidelines that was revised and approved by ICDA-US Board in November In order to follow Guiding Principles for Disbursements of ICDA-US Mission Fund that was revised and approved by ICDA-US Board in November 2004, this is for any request of grant from a Catholic group of or for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in United States. In the event I may not be able to answer such request of grant, I contact ICDA-US Chaplain for advice and/or approval. In the event I receive request of grant from outside of United States, I refer it to ICDA-US Board. I do all the work, except updating (done by ICDA-US Home Office); writing letter of annual Mission Appeal (done by ICDA-US Chaplain) and mailing annual Mission Appeal (done by ICDA-US Home Office). 3) Apart from this fund, what were your other activities in ICDA so far? Presently, I am Treasurer of ICDA-US Chapter #6: St. Louis Catholic Deaf Society. For ICDA, Executive Council Secretary ( and ), President ( ), and Treasurer General of ICDA ( ) For ICDA-US Section, Co-Chairperson of Mission Fund (May 4, ), Vice President ( ), Treasurer ( ), and Secretary ( ) For ICDA-US MWR, Secretary ( and ) and Treasurer ( ) For ICDA-US Chapter #29 St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church for the Deaf (Landover Hills, Maryland) Treasurer (appointed by priest ) and President ( ) For ICDA-US Chapter #6 St. Louis Catholic Deaf Society ( Society ), President ( ), Secretary ( and ), Chairperson of Special Projects Fund ( ) and Board Member ( )

4) We appreciate you for sacrificing your precious time to ICDA, which moment that pull you to involve in ICDA for the first time? I first was pulled into ICDA by late Deacon Jerome Kiel of Baltimore, MD and Dorothy Steffanic of Silver Spring, MD to be a treasurer for ICDA Mason Dixon Region. 5) What dreams do you want to see ICDA in future? I see ICDA as a die-hard organization that has strong Catholic faith. 6) As we know that ICDA has many inactive chapters, is it possible to re-active many of these chapters? As Sister Maureen Langton, CSJ, had suggested some years ago, that each ICDA officer should go out and visit inactive chapters with presentation of what ICDA is all about. Officers of ICDA-US (national, regional, and local levels) need to become a "Go-Getter" -- Jesus told his disciples that each two disciples are to go out and reach out to people, as well as chapters or groups in the name of Jesus. 7) Can ICDA-US Mission Fund help to re-active these inactive chapters? If yes, could you share with us your opinion that how will it implement from this fund to inactive chapters? Yes, especially through retreat, preferably host by chapter. 8) Can you share with us examples of this fund's charitable activities? Some examples of how Mission Fund helps are: Camp Mark Seven Scholarship (Old Forge, NY) through Fr. Tom Coughlin, Camp Mark Seven Bible Institute (Old Forge, NY) through Fr. Tom Coughlin, Ministry Formation Program (Chicago, IL) through Director of MFP, Local retreats, mostly through Chapter of ICDA-US, Religious workshops, National Deaf Cursillo through Director of NDC, Missionary within USA and Special projects within USA, such as Silent Directed Retreat, Revised Roman Missal, etc. 9) As we know that you were Board member of ICDA for many years, could you share your words with current Board members of ICDA? Thank you very much for spending your time with us. 1) "Don't Give Up" --- If you give up, you are also give up on Jesus. Go to Mass regularly and see "Jesus" in all people. 2) "Be involved in Catholic work" --- as Jesus directly or indirectly through people or nature or incident, calls us to do for the glory of God. 3) "Pray Always" --- That will help us to rely on Jesus more.

From the MWR President The fall season is upon us now. It is refreshing to see God s wonderful artwork. One of my first tasks as MWR President was to create an for each of the officers. The reason for this is to separate from our personal s as well as being consistent for the future officers. Here are the addresses for the MWR officers: mwr.president@gmail.com mwr.secretary@gmail.com mwr.treasurer@gmail.com mwr.pastpresident@gmail.com mwr.newsletter@gmail.com Feel free to contact us using the above s with any of your concerns or suggestions. Thank you and enjoy this beautiful foliage. Margaret Calteaux, MWR President Words of Pope Francis

Archangels (St. Michael, St. Gabriel, & St. Raphael) THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL Michael from the Hebrew Mikha'el, meaning: Who is as God? As the proper name of one of the great Archangels, the word Michael appears for the first time in the book of the prophet Daniel, where he is called: "Michael, one of the chief princes," and again: "At that time shall Michael rise up, the great prince, who standeth for the children of thy people." Saint Michael has always been the warrior Angel, fighting first Satan and his demons from the beginning, then, in the course of time, all the enemies of God's own People. As of old, so today, Saint Michael is the great defender of the Church of Christ on earth. THE ARCHANGEL GABRIEL The name Gabriel seems to be composed of the Hebrew words, gebher : man, and 'el : God. It means, therefore, Man of God, or, Strength of God. Gabriel who is "the strength of God" must have been the Angel mentioned by Saint Luke, in his narrative of Christ's agony in the garden: "And there appeared to him an Angel from heaven, strengthening him." It was fitting that the Angel who had witnessed the Savior's agony. THE ARCHANGEL RAPHAEL Raphael, from the Hebrew rapha' : to heal, and 'el: God, means "God heals," or the "Divine healer." Raphael, the Divine healer, seems to have been at work at Jerusalem, in the days of Christ our Lord, in the pool called Bethsaida by the Sheepgate. "An Angel of the Lord used to come down at certain times into the pool and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pool after the motion of the water, was cured of whatever infirmity he had." The health-giving ministry of Saint Raphael may still be seen in the miraculous cures that have taken place up to our own times in many of the sacred Shrines throughout the Christian world.

Catholic Recipe: Almond Cake INGREDIENTS 2 cups granulated sugar, 1 1/2 cups pure lard, Dash of salt, 4 cups flour, Blanched almond halves, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 egg, 1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract, 2 teaspoons water Details Yield: 6 dozen, For Ages: 11+, Origin: China DIRECTIONS Cream sugar and lard until soft and fluffy. Beat together egg, flavoring, and water, and add to creamed mixture, mixing thoroughly. Sift flour, baking powder and salt and work into the other mixture gradually. Knead dough well. Form into balls the size of walnuts and refrigerate overnight in a covered pan. Flatten balls on ungreased cookie sheet, pressing down with bottom of measuring cup covered with damp cloth. Press blanched almond half into each cake. Bake in hot oven (400 F.) for minutes, or until cakes are slightly browned. Let stand 5 minutes on tin before removing with spatula. Cookies are rich and fragile and must be handled with care. They will keep fresh a long time when stored in an airtight tin.
