2 Annual Trip to Eckert s Boyd Orchard Apples and Boyds Orchard with orchard continuing to A grand time was had by all at our annual outing to Eckert s Boyd Orchards. There was plenty to see, taste, and do with a few brave souls even going down the giant slide! From the looks of the faces on those wanted posters, the money to post bail for all of the folks who had fun is going to put us WAY over budget. Page 2

4 Housing Highlights Have you heard the phrase "As mad as a hatter? The term was used as far back as the early 1800's. While no one knows exactly when it was first used, some people claimed that the phrase pertained to the fact that mercury was used in the felting process of making hats. Over long term use the hatters suffered from mercury poisoning which resulted in slurred speech, tremors, stumbling, and in some cases hallucinations. One of the most recognizable Mad Hatters today is from the movie Alice in Wonderland. We came together to make our own hats and to watch this fun movie as a group. We did not use mercury when we made our hats! Baunta and Forest View Thanksgiving Potluck November 14th We are so excited to share a Thanksgiving Meal together with our Sayre Neighbors. A Thanksgiving dinner you eat with friends and neighbors is now being called Friendsgiving, and for some is the best Fall holiday there is. As the name implies, Friendsgiving is just like Thanksgiving only celebrated with friends, not family. Friendsgiving is for eating whatever foods you want, and it s usually done potluck style. Dining will provide the turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, and the rest of the delicious meal will be provided as a potluck by the residents of Baunta and Forest View. There are sign up sheets in the Activity Books. Please sign up for the dish you will be bringing. We look forward to seeing you on the 14th at 4:00 p.m. Page 4

5 Natural Bridge State Park Trip Natural Bridge State Resort Park is a Kentucky state park located in Powell and Wolfe Counties along the Middle Fork of the Red River. It is surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Forest. Its namesake natural bridge is the centerpiece of the park. The natural sandstone arch spans 78 ft and is 65 ft high. The natural process of weathering formed the arch over millions of years. The park is approximately 2,300 acres of which approximately 1,200 acres is dedicated by the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission as a nature preserve. In 1981 this land was dedicated into the nature preserves system to protect the ecological communities and rare species habitat. The first federally endangered Virginia big eared bats, Corynorhinus townsendii virginianus, recorded in Kentucky were found at Natural Bridge State Resort Park in the 1950s. Page 5

In October we had 2 educational opportunities for residents. The first speaker was Social Worker Jennifer Garland with the Lexington Senior Center. She informed residents of the many programs and opportunities available, which help to promote a healthy active lifestyle. The second speaker was Audiologist Janet Wolfson from Lexington Hearing and Speech Center. She spoke about the importance of hearing well as you age. On November 14th we will have Officer Tim Brown of LFACC here to speak about responsible pet ownership, and how to approach an unfamiliar dog. Then, on November 28th Hazel Teichen with Bluegrass Care Navigators will be here to educate residents about advance directives, which includes the Kentucky Living Will. Solve the puzzle, win a prize! The first person with the correct answer will win a prize! Residents of Baunta and Forest View call Service Coordinator, Loretta ext 150 Riddle: Susan has invited her family to Thanksgiving Dinner. As her plates are not the best, Susan wants to buy new plates, one for each person at her Thanksgiving Dinner. There will be a grandfather, a grandmother, two fathers, two mothers, four children, three grandchildren, one brother, two sisters, two sons, two daughters, one father-in-law, one mother -in-law and a daughter-in -law. At least how many plates does Susan need to buy? Page 6

7 Resident Organizations The Prayer Warriors of Sayre Christian Village are pleased to announce that they have a Food Bank on site in the Baunta Building. If you are needing food please contact Caren Leet or Ruby Webb. We will be happy to assist you with this. We will keep any requests in confidence. Because we care, we want to share. We also accept food donations for the food pantry. We do not accept cash or commodities food items. We do accept shelf stable items and can food items that are not expired. Please no glass containers or refrigerated foods. We also want to invite you to join the Prayer Warriors for our meetings, which are held each Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Baunta Café. Submitted by: Caren Leet On this Veterans Day, and everyday we honor our Veterans. thank you for your service. Open Arms Ministry is planning our second fundraiser event. On Saturday, November 4th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. we will set up in the Baunta Café for an afternoon of fun and shopping. Tickets are being sold for $1.00 each by ministry members for our raffle basket. The basket will include: A $24 Baunta Café meal ticket, $25 Wal-Mart gift card, a round-trip Sayre transportation ticket, a $50 certificate for services at the Sayre Beauty Salon, a free ticket to the November or December activity outing, a set of beautiful UK jewelry, a custom made Christmas Wreath, a set of hand-made Christmas Cards, and much more. We also plan to sell gently used items and crafted items that will make nice gifts. There will be baked goods available as well. Please plan to stop by and support this worthy cause. If you are considering joining our ministry group please talk to any of our members who will be more than happy to tell you all about what we do. At this season of Thanksgiving we are especially reminded of all of God s blessings that we witness in each of our members and residents at Sayre. 8 Blessing of the Animals On October 4th, we hosted our 3rd Annual Blessing of the Animals Service. Father Brian Cole from the Church of the Good Shepherd led the service. The majority of the attendees were dogs though there was one cat. Some folks chose to bring a picture of their beloved pet as well. St. Francis was born in Assisi, Italy in the late summer or fall of Due to his radical commitment to follow the Gospel, his exuberance in his relationships with everyone and everything, and by the grace of God, St. Francis has become one of the most beloved saints of all time. As an example of St. Francis' love and kindness, you will find that all kinds of churches, both Catholic and Protestant, hold annual "Blessing of the Animals" events near the Feast of St. Francis in October. 9 Fall Festivities A quilt is much more than pieces of fabric sewn together. For many, it is a cherished work of art that is handed down through the generations. In October we had our Annual Quilt Show and Tea Party hosted by the Sewing Club in Friendship Towers. Gail, Margaret, and Jean displayed the quilts made by their groups. Other residents also had the opportunity to display quilts made by themselves or loved ones. It is amazing to think of the time and care that it took to make each of these beautiful creations. The outstanding October birthdays were celebrated with the Young At Heart Band. A good time is always had when this ensemble comes on campus. Page 9

12 Pastor appreciation day is held on the second Sunday in October. We had a nice time celebrating Chaplain Tyler. All in attendance agreed that he is the perfect fit for Sayre Christian Village. Below are some of the sentiments shared by residents: He opens my mind to new thoughts, that give me new inspirations. I learned quickly that he could minister to older people, God has given him a ministry and I know in my heart that God has great things in store for him. I am happy to be a small part in that.
