1 The Heart Beat of Sacred Heart Originally, Veterans Day was called Armistice Day, and the date was chosen to commemorate the signing of the armistice with Germany that ended hostilities during World War I. The armistice, signed on November 11th, 1918, did not officially end that war, however. That came on June 28th, 1919, with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. On the other hand, since the U.S. never signed the Treaty of Versailles like the other Allies, one could say that for the U.S. at least, the November 11th armistice really did end the war. At first, the focus of Armistice Day was on the veterans of World War I, though it was always meant to honor all veterans of foreign wars, who risked their lives on the battle field to secure the freedoms of all Americans. Over time, with the passing away of the World War I generation and the coming of new conflicts during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, the focus on the 1918 Armistice was lost and the name of the holiday was changed. Additionally, today, Veterans Day is generally regarded as honoring all those who ever served in the U.S. Armed Force rather than only those who actually fought in a war. In 1919, the first celebration of Armistice Day took place, with Britain and the Allied nations of World War I all observing the day. Please take a moment when you re in the social hall and look at the memorial plaque that has listed members for Sacred Heart Parish that served in military services. We owe all our veterans a prayer of gratitude for their love and dedication for their/our country. On Veterans Day we say a special prayer for our living veterans: Joe King, Louis Jiunta, Donald Lecik, Sr., Dr. Leo Pajarillo, John Caponite, Lt. Colonel Jaime Bowen, Lonnie Bowen, and John Vance and a special remembrance of our veterans that are no longer with us. Also actively serving our country is Lt. Colonel Jamie Bowen, son of Lonnie and Debby Bowen and Barry Thacker, son of Joyce Bertschy. Fr. Tom said a special prayer to honor our veterans at the Friday morning mass. Ladies Altar Society Christmas Raffles Beginning Sunday, November 27 th, a hand crafted wooden item will be donated by Lonnie Bowen for the LAS to raffle. There will be one different item per week until Christmas. Raffle tickets are $1.00. Items will vary from week to week. Bring your Dollars and take a chance! Lonnie is well known for his unique wood pieces of creative artistry. Lonnie can envision a piece of wood and turn it into a Lonnie Masterpiece! His gifts are from the earth. What he visualizes with a piece of wood or the vegetables he plants and grows each year is exceptional. He is blessed with a God Given Talent of ideas of wood crafting and his knowledge of the earth and soil. Debby shares her talents of Canning and makes her famous pickles, jams and peppers from Lonnie s harvest and shares them with our community. Recently, Lonnie was the guest speaker at the WV Garden Club s District Meeting and shared his stories of knowledge on cultivating and growing produce. One of the High Tunnels in East Williamson has become a project of his to help and teach agriculture to our young people. From spring to fall Lonnie can be found working in his own High Tunnels at his home and then from fall to Christmas, he s busy making unusual wooden pieces in his workshop. God has truly blessed him with these talents. We are blessed that both Lonnie and Debby share their gifts and talents with our community. Thank you Lonnie and Debby!

2 Thank you to the Filipino Community for sponsoring the meager meal after the 1st Wednesday Devotion to the Blessed Mother and to Amber, Debby, Janie, and Julie 2 for the Chicken and Dumplings and cornbread served after the 1st Friday Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Please keep Dr. Manola and Aurora Tampoya in your thoughts and prayers. Dr. Tampoya s brother, Sam, passed away last week in California. He has very ill for several months after suffering an aneurysm. Please keep the Tampoya family in your thoughts and prayers. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in eternal peace. The total miles to Bethlehem are 6,184! Total miles as of last Sunday: miles! We walked miles last week. We re doing great. We re close to France! We are honored that several of the Tug Valley Runners are joining us this year to Run for Chris Jessie! They ve clocked over 2500 miles for Chris. Julie said we will keep their miles separate. Please runners, turn your miles in to Julie. Let s make it to Bethlehem on Christmas Eve this year! Keep walking! Our Religious Classes continue to meet each week after the brunch Sunday. Last Sunday, Julie Miller and Anita Kimble had their classes in the Church learning to recite the Rosary. A special Thank You to the parents who takes the time and effort to have your children at Mass to hear the word of God and help in preparing our children to live it. Also, a special Thank You to our teachers who participate in the ministry of Religious Education to work together to bring our children Christ s Gospel and helping them to grow in their encounter with the Living Lord. Have you noticed confirmation candidates serving on the altar at the Sunday morning mass? Fr. Tom and Julie Miles are working with our young ones each week. They re doing a great job! Happy 2nd Birthday Lance These pictures says it all! Gatti s in Pikeville was rocking Saturday evening. The room was decorated with all of Lance s favorite characters especially Spider Man! It s hard to believe two years has passed since Lance was born. The room was filled with toddlers running around, laughing, making noises, and adults socializing and eating. Time has passed so fast. Dr s Mae and Noel Icamina would like to thank everyone for celebrating with them and Lance. A great evening to celebrate, have fun, eat delicious pizza, and spend with friends.

3 Food for Thought as the Year of Mercy is coming to a close. People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway. If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Give the world your best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway. For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway. True Meaning and Significance of the Jubilee of Mercy Pope Francis called on Catholics around the world to use the Jubilee Year of Mercy to open wide the doors of our hearts to forgive others and to work against social exclusion, even of those that may have caused bother or upset. When we go through that door, it is good to remember that we must also open wide the doors of our heart, suggesting people can even stand before the holy door and ask: Lord, help me to open the doors of my heart also hard to believe in two weeks, Sunday, November 20th, the Closing of the Holy Door of St. Peter s Basilica will bring an end to the year! It has been be an incredibly busy year. Once the Holy Door in St. Peter's Basilica was opened on December 8th, other Holy Doors throughout the city and the world have also been opened to signify the importance of this event. The entire year has been centered around the concept of mercy. That means special care should be taken to make Confession a key part of the Jubilee. There will be special events throughout the world as the Jubilee Year comes to an end. We are truly blessed at Sacred Heart. Our community is filled with the true meaning of the Jubilee of Mercy. We each rely on each other with love, dedication, and support that makes our parish thrive and successful. Our parish is dedicated to the success of our catholic faith, our church, as we live our mission and continue our tradition of support. It s hard to believe the end to the Extraordinary Year of the Jubilee of Mercy is so near. Has it been an Extraordinary Year for YOU? Fr. Tom is planning a special celebration to honor this important day next Sunday. Please, everyone make an effort to attend this High Mass. As will continue to pray the Prayer of Mercy, may we each be reminded of the true meaning and significance of the Jubilee in our own lives. Young people say, What good can one person do? What is the sense of our small effort? They cannot see that we must lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time, we can be responsible only for the one action of the present moment. But we can beg for an increase of love in our hearts that will vitalize and transform all our individual actions, and know that GOD will take them and multiply them as Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes.

4 Ladies Altar Society Did you know that being a member of the parish you are already a member of the Altar Society? YOU ARE A MEMBER! Come be a part of this important and fun committee! Dues are now $15.00 per year. The Ladies' Altar society is open to all ladies of the parish, 18 years or older, married or single. The Altar Society is a vital part of the support to our parish. The work and events pay for the vestments, altar linens and much more. Congratulations to the newly re-elected officers of the Ladies Altar Society. Janie Hunt, President, Julie Miller, Vice President, Janice Olive, Secretary and Debby Bowen, Treasurer. Also, it is with much gratitude and appreciation we thank our 2016 officers for this past year of dedication and love for our parish and altar society. Our Ladies are a very important part of our parish. They work hard along with our fabulous men to make our parish special. We are blessed! The Altar Society cares for the altar and sanctuary. Their purpose is to help maintain the liturgical needs of our daily worship, to beautify our worship area, and to grow in the community and common service. One of their duties and responsibilities, to name a few, is to take care of the linens, priests vestments and altar server robes. They decorate the Sanctuary prior to Masses and holidays. Several of the Altar Society members provide individual assistance which includes the washing, ironing, folding, repair and maintenance of the linens and robes. They also manage the Religious Articles located in display cabinet in the entrance hallway. One lady shares her talent of sewing and has made the beautiful altar clothes that adorn the altars. We are blessed! The Altar Society Ladies also participates in a wonderful ministry, providing a dinner for the families of loved ones that the Rite of Christian Burial has been celebrated at our church. This has been a tradition for as long as Sacred Heart has been in existence. Our ladies are very special and very dedicated to the success and continued traditions of our parish. We are blessed! Our Ladies are blessed with the assistance of our men. So many events, projects, and gatherings are as successful because we have the Best Sacred Heart Men. Our Ladies are very appreciative always for their help and presence. Our parish is small in number but GREAT in your love, dedication, and help! We have so many talented parishioners that give of their time to make our parish special and beautiful. We are blessed! Please continue to pray for our parish and parishioners that we always work together to maintain beauty in our sanctuary. Sacred Heart is blessed! Come ladies!
