1 Service of Worship Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 29, 2013 Eleven o clock in the morning Keeping the heart of the University listening to the heart of God The Rich Man and the Poor Lazarus, by Hendrick ter Brugghen, Today s scripture passages cast an image of God s hopes for his people. In Jeremiah, the prophet acts in profound hope purchasing a plot of land in a region that is currently being destroyed with the belief that it will one day be filled with fields and vineyards. In 1 Timothy, disciples are warned against the love of money. In Luke s gospel, a rich man s life is set against a poor man, Lazarus, as the rich man discovers that the blessing of earthly life do not necessarily reflect the judgment or kingdom of God. Today we are pleased to welcome back many Chapel Choir alumni who are singing with the choir today in conjunction with Homecoming Weekend.

2 At the close of today s service, the Lord s Supper will be celebrated in the Memorial Chapel located to the left of the chancel. Immediately following the Lord s Supper, a service of prayer for healing will be held. The service consists of prayers for healing and wholeness, with anointing and laying on of hands. Gomes Distinguished Guest Preacher. Professor Walton is the Plummer Professor of Christian Morals at Harvard University and Pusey Minister in Harvard s Memorial Church. His research addresses the intersections of religion, politics, and media culture. Dr. Walton is published widely in scholarly journals such as Religion and American Culture and Pneuma: The Journal of the Society for Pentecostal Studies. He has been featured in national and international news outlets including The New York Times, CNN, and the BBC. Professor Walton is the author of Watch This! The Ethics and Aesthetics of Black Televangelism, and he is currently working on two books: Pentecostalism Made Pretty and American Religion in Black and Blue (with Eddie S. Glaude). Dr. Walton has a degree from Morehouse College and his M.Div. and Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary.

Our New Day Begun: The Faith of Duke s First Black Voices Dean Luke Powery will moderate a panel discussion with some of the black trailblazers who helped integrate Duke University over the last 50 years. In particular the discussion will focus on the role that religious faith played in the struggles, challenges, joys, and opportunities of the firsts at Duke. New participants are always welcome. Adult Forum On Sunday, October 6, the Rev. Dr. Lester Ruth, Research Professor of Christian Worship at Duke Divinity School, will present Perhaps Contemporary Music Is Not All That Contemporary.
