2 Page Two OLD ST. MARY S CHURCH May 27, 2018 OUR PARISH MISSION Founded in 1833, Old St. Mary s parish is the first Catholic parish in the Chicago area. Guided for more than a century by the vision of the Paulist Fathers, we are a diverse and welcoming community dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of the Loop, South Loop and the greater Chicago area. As a unified Church and School community, Old St. Mary s Parish promotes the mission of the Paulist Fathers to welcome those who have been away from the church, to build bridges of respect and collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds and religions, and to promote justice and healing in our society. From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, Starting with this issue there is a new weekly feature in our parish bulletin, The Stewardship Corner. Each week the Corner will feature an item that captures an example of good stewardship of either our talent, our time, or our treasure. Stewardship of talent focuses on how a person volunteers the gift of their skills for the benefit of others. Stewardship of time is about how we invest our time and in particular how much time we spend in prayer and spiritual devotion. Stewardship of treasure is how we invest our financial resources to support church ministry and other worthy causes. This new feature takes the place of the weekly report on the offertory income of the parish. Of course, there will still be frequent reports on offertory income but the reports will now be on a monthly rather than weekly basis. All three elements of stewardship are important and we hope that this will help put things in a more proper perspective. The goal is to encourage all parishioners to adopt an attitude of good Christian stewardship. Good disciples are good stewards. Fr. Non-hearing aid users can pick up a loop receiver from the sacristy and listen through a headset. Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ leads naturally to the practice of stewardship. These linked realities, discipleship and stewardship, then make up the fabric of a Christian life in which each day is lived in an intimate, personal relationship with the Lord... Following Jesus is the work of a lifetime. At every step forward, one is challenged to go further in accepting and loving God s will. Being a disciple is not just something else to do, alongside many other things suitable for Christians; it is a total way of life and requires continuing conversion. This very moving service is held annually to commemorate the lives of our neighbors who were buried by the Office of the Cook County Medical Examiner. There is an early enrollment discount if registration and payment are made by July 31 st. Early enrollment fee for 1 child is $ and $ for each additional child in the same family. After July 31 st, the general enrollment fee is $300 for one child and $150 for each additional child in the same family. The Sacrament Fee which covers both First Reconciliation and First Communion is $40. Sacrament fee for children preparing for Confirmation is $80. There is no discount for sacramental fees. You can register and made payment on our website: Fr. Paul Huesing, CSP will lead a reflection day for seniors on Tuesday, June 19 from 9:30 am until 2:00 pm. Participants will reflect, reconcile, integrate, accept (celebrate) the life they have lived, consider unfinished business, and (hopefully) look to the future with openness. An offering of $15 is requested to cover the cost of provided materials and lunch. We will meet in the pastoral center. Although planned for seniors, people of any age are welcome. But please call the parish to pre-register. Phone THE RESPONSIBILITY OF OUR FAITH Today is a day simply to ponder the fact that in baptism we were claimed by God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy prompts us to fix in our hearts the truth that God is the Lord of both heaven and earth and there is no other god. Saint Paul reminds us that, because we received the Spirit of adoption in baptism, we are now children of God. In the Gospel Jesus charges us with the responsibility to make other disciples. These realities make today s solemnity a day of praise, adoration, and responsibility. It is a fitting day to thank God for the absolutely free gift of faith that we were given in baptism.
