Guided for more than a century by the vision of the Paulist Fathers, we are a diverse and welcoming community dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of the Loop, South Loop and the greater Chicago area. As a unified Church and School community, Old St. Mary s Parish promotes the mission of the Paulist Fathers to welcome those who have been away from the church, to build bridges of respect and collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds and religions, and to promote justice and healing in our society.

2 Page Two OLD ST. MARY S CHURCH February 17, 2019 Old St. Mary s Sanctuary Windows Of course you ALL know this, it is just me who is playing catch up. If you look at our sanctuary windows (behind the altar) they are meant to take us skyward from early Chris an beginnings. Step 1 you see the window with the Blessed Virgin Mary in it, don t you? Look closely, the West corner of the triangular window behind the altar the dark blue and purples you see a stylized Mary. It is a depic on of Mary as the new Eve. And those colors mingle with the colors of crea on and live and the pull together with the dark blood red. Step 2 in most churches, if you see blue in a window it is connected with Mary and if you see red in a window it is connected with Jesus, no different here. The red on the East side of the window smashes into the wall with the crucifix of Jesus the new Adam as he hangs upon the cross. No ce the red seeps through the wall, behind the cross, to emerge in the next window. This crucifix is the same crucifix that hung in Old St. Mary s at Wabash and Van Buren. By the blood of Christ, we are all saved. Step 3 of course the blood of the new Adam, mingled with the colors of crea on from the new Eve and new Adam burst into a golden array of colors as we pass from death to life in the resurrec on, and then break into the sky as Christ ascends to the heavens. As our window begins grounded in earth and the new crea on through Jesus and Mary harkening us to the savior, it concludes through the mysteries of the new testament to mount into the sky with a glorious ascension in which we are called to proclaim the Gospel and see that the colors of that life spring to the sky and all corners of the earth. The concluding pains of our stained glass window leave us in the Ascension of Christ. And, for us as a parish that began as St. Mary of the Assump on 176 years ago, to see the call to the Ascension is also to bring us back to the latest artwork in the Church, Assump on of Mary. It is all about telling the Gospel story. At the Ascension, Jesus readied us for Pentecost, when we got to proclaim our belief in Christ through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. From there, Mary became the first example of what happens when we fulfill the call to proclaim the passion, death and resurrec on of Christ. Fr. Brad PASTOR S WHITE BOARD Special note: as some of you have noticed, the Assumption of Mary is curling a bit on the sides. We have been looking for a way to remedy this situation. In the next few weeks you will notice the painting missing from its usual place. Don t worry, it will be back as soon as the frame is attached, sometime during the season of Lent. Just thought you should know. Old St. Mary s Church S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL Chicago s First Catholic Parish - Established in The Paulist Fathers serving our parish since October 12, 1903.

6 Page Six OLD ST. MARY S CHURCH February 17, Annual Catholic Appeal For details on how to register, please contact Paulist Fr. Dat Tran, our vocation director at (917) or be@paulist.org. Our focus on African-American inventors and their contributions to our everyday life continues with Charles B. Brooks While most people will never actually get behind the wheel of a self-propelled street sweeper, without the Brooks-designed truck equipped with trash-anddebris-pushing brushes city streets would probably be much less clean. The Newark, New Jersey native s two other successful 1890s patents included dustproof collection bags for his street sweeper, as well as a ticket punch that collected the tiny circular paper discards instead of letting them fall to the ground. A true visionary, Dr. Patricia Bath became the first female African-American medical doctor to receive a medical patent when she invented a laser cataract treatment device called a Laserphaco Probe in Photo: Jemal Countess/Getty Images (Bath was also the first African-American to complete a residency in ophthalmology.) The co-founder of the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness patented her invention in Source: Come, Follow Me and share the Word Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. The Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledged campaign commitment where you can make a gift payable in installments. A pledge is a promise to make a gift over a span of time. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus call to Come, Follow Me and share the Word. Once we reach our parish goal of $ $50, in paid pledges, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you who did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.
