1 HOME IS WHERE THE FAMILY IS The idea, dream, and reality of family is so strong and durable that we use it to describe all that is best about human gatherings. We speak of the family of nations, of our church and parish families. The greatest compliment we can pay a friend or gracious host is to say that we feel at home with them, we feel part of the family. Families are the first crucibles in which love is tested and tempered. Jesus himself was one of three people who lived in the shadow of each other. This family, like our own, did not always get it right, but they always tried to. These three amateurs were on holiday, and one of them got lost. Two were worried sick and took great measures to find the third, a boy after all, who was seeking the meaning of his calling. He found his vocation to do his Father s work but he also returned home with his parents. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Old St. Mary s Church1500 S. CONFESSION: SATURDAY FOLLOWING THE 9 a.m. MASS UNTIL 10:30 a.m. AND AT OTHER TIMES BY APPOINTMENT COMMUNION/SICK CALLS: UPON REQUEST WHAT MAKES THE HOLY FAMILY HOLY? Nope, not a trick question. So a quick answer like, God, or Jesus is God, or God sends the Holy Spirit, are all true, but how does that help us live holy lives in our world? The Church recognizes families as little Churches. Each family reflects the bigger Church in its choosing how to take care of its members by focusing on God s call to love. What is helpful about The Holy Family, is that they are not a traditional nuclear family not two parents, two kids and a pet. And throughout Advent, we learned that the usual way a family has a child was not the way for Mary and Joseph. What we especially know about each is that they were devout, listened to and obeyed God. Each of them also made tough decisions: Mary to conceive Jesus through the Holy Spirit and Joseph to accept that God was behind that mystery. It could not have been easy for either of them. Then, out of devotion as well as legal necessity, they have to move. The first move temporarily to Bethlehem for the census, then on to Egypt to avoid the cruelty of Herod. Jesus shows up in the middle of this, and as is always the case, the family is not just three people but new relationships between and among each. Remember, they remained in unfamiliar surroundings for a while. Maybe they knew some folk, but they were also surrounded by strangers. As a politically persecuted family (Herod was after any family with children under 2), the Holy Family migrates to Egypt and stay there for a while. Only after Herod s death can they return. And through it all, what sustains them is their faith in God, and their obedience to follow where God is leading them. As we reflect on the Holy Family this weekend probably a good time to ask ourselves if we are truly connected to God, and obedient to the answers he provides us with in prayer. But also, it is a time to keep believing, no matter the difficulties of life around us, love is meant to see us through. What truly binds families and makes them holy, regardless of circumstances, paying attention to God and each other, and making our choices based on the love that God shares with us.
