I mean, from our enlightened perspective of 21 st century science and technology we know that stars don t actually move. If the Magi actually saw something it was probably a celestial event of some sort, but not a moving star. Regardless, what they saw so impacted them that they had to pack up their camels and begin a search. Something, so extraordinary had happened somewhere and they had a quest to find it. Remember, not just a star, but angels were in the air that night. Most people don t usually see angels either. But we know, when God came to earth, when Jesus was born, the cosmic and celestial forces that are usually natural came to be supernatural that night and maybe for many nights thereafter. So if you are telling the Gospel story of Jesus birth and what it means (and you should) how do you tell it? What extraordinary details do you include to say this is something special and you should pay attention? For all of us, those answers that explain the situations around us, our needs, our hurts, can be quite clear at times, breaking open our ability to understand and be healed. The Magi story is about people seeking an answer that they were not finding in their everyday life. And yet, through their daily life of looking up to the heavens, all of a sudden, they found hope and light in their lives. I think if we pay attention to the Magi story, we are invited to consider our darkest moments, realize God is there, and now leads us to confront what is hurting us, by following his light that is the remedy for us and every situation in our world. It is as if a dark night could be changed and broken open by the light of a star. May you find God s light in this Epiphany! Fr. Brad MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR Rachel Schripsema, Counselor-in-Residence by appt. only rachelschrips@icloud.com

Matthew alone tells us this grand and seductive story so that we might see the light and know that the child these magi visited is the ful llment of prophecy, the king of the world that stretches to the magi s home country and beyond, right down the ages to us. We too see and understand anew. Like the magi, our patron saints for this day, we see in the newborn child the king of the universe and light of the world. Like the magi, we nd in ourselves a new faith and a new life. Like them, we return to our home by a new route. We are asked to come away from this festive season ourselves renewed and awake to the presence of God among us. We are asked to nd God where God is to be found, to be attentive and surprised and ready to bow down in adoration and to offer our gifts. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 6 Page Six OLD ST. MARY S CHURCH January 6, 2019 THANK YOU OLD ST. MARY S PARISH Thank you so much for blessing us with Christmas dinner. It is very needed and appreciated. This has been a blessing for my family You have given us a wonderful gift for Christmas. May God be a blessing in your life as you are too my family. Thank you for your generosity during this holiday season, our family really appreciates it! Bless you all. You have brightened our Christmas. Thank you for giving food for my family and for me. I go to Academy of St. Benedict and I am in the 8th grade. Your kindness meant so much. Thank you so much. Thank you for being such a blessing to our family. Your thoughtfulness is a gift that we will always treasure May God bless you and your family. Thank you for your holiday blessing, not only to my family but to all the Academy St. Benedict families. Just a few of the expressions of thank you from the St. Benedict the African school in the Englewood community. Your response to the Adopt a Family for Christmas was overwhelming and made this Christmas a day that many families will never forget. For centuries, the Christians in and around Bethlehem have earned a living by carving religious olive wood art to sell to visiting pilgrims. Fewer pilgrims are journeying to the Holy Land today, making it difficult for those Christians to support their families. As a result, there has been a dramatic rise in Christian emigration from the Holy Land. Now, less than 1% of the population in the Holy Land is Christians. Blest Art Inc helps the struggling Christian families of Bethlehem by marketing their artwork in the United States. Due to this work many Christian families maintain their livelihood and their ancestral homes in the land of our Lord. When Blest Art visits our parish, they will have hand-carved nativity sets, statues, crosses, rosaries, and many other pieces of beautiful olive wood art. They kindly invite us to visit their display and to consider purchasing a piece of art from the Holy Land. In doing so, you will help support the many families who depend on this form or art for their living. Your purchase will make a difference in the lives of many Christian families. They accept cash, checks, and all major credit cards. Please note that they do not ask for, nor do they accept, any donations. Thank you in advance for your purchase when we visit. Jeryes Qumseya And the members of Blest Art Inc The Blest Art display will be in the Commons Saturday & Sunday January 12 th and 13 th, 2019, after each Mass.

7 January 6, 2019: THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Monday of this week is Christmas Day in Russia and in much of the Orthodox world. This curious difference in schedule has a lot to do with how calendars have been developed and changed over the years. In the year 45 B.C. Julius Ceasar gave the empire his Julian Calendar, with the winter solstice on January 6. This put an end to a system in which officials called pontiffs were able to tweak the calendar by adding extra days in as needed. He invented two new months at that time, December and January; and in order to correct the mess the pontiffs had made, forced a year of 445 days on the empire in what he named The Last Year of Confusion. The new months varied in number of days according to a complex schedule, but the calendar was still off by nearly twelve minutes a year, and lost a full day every 130 years. Pope Gregory XIII reformed the calendar in 1583, but not everyone appreciated his efforts. England held out for two hundred years. The year 1700 was a leap year in England, but not in France; they were eleven days apart! George Washington was really born on February 11; when the Gregorian calendar was finally adopted in the English colonies shortly before the Revolution, he had to move his birthday to February 22. Now the calendars are thirteen days apart, which accounts for Russia s Julian calendar Christmas. And Caesar thought he had brought confusion to an end! James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
