1 The NIB Neatishead, Irstead and Barton Turf Parish Magazine By Katie Painter, aged 6 THE BENEFICE OF St BENEDICT The Parishes of Ashmanhaugh, Barton Turf, Beeston St Lawrence, Horning, Irstead and Neatishead From your Parish Priest The clocks have gone back to Greenwich Mean Time, the days are getting shorter, the nights longer, and the mornings darker, but it s time to say Happy New Church Year!! again as Advent and Christmas are upon us. Yet although it s darker and colder as winter sets in, I am always encouraged by the words from Cranmer s wonderful Advent collect: Give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility. Light is part of both the story and the message of Christmas. The angel greeted the shepherds on the hillside, as glory of the Lord shone around them. The wise men followed the light of the star to find the Christ-child. And when the baby is brought to the Temple, Simeon praises God that he has seen the one who is to be a light to lighten the gentiles, the one who is God s gift to this world. Those who witnessed Christ s life on earth were transformed by the experience. But that light was and is for all time. Just as the light of the Olympic flame is carried from runner to runner, and from country to country on its journey, so the light of the gospel has been passed from generation to generation, down the ages, and now rests with us for a time. We are part of that light s journey in both time and space. We need to spread that light as far and as wide as we can by showing forth that light wherever we go, to whoever we meet, and particularly to the next generation. As we prepare once again to celebrate Jesus birth, may I extend a warm invitation to you to join us for any of our Advent and Christmas services, and experience again the Wonder of Christmas. Join us as we begin to celebrate again the story cycle of Jesus life on earth, from Nativity to Ascension. Join us as we pray that we may let the light of the Christ-child, the light of the gospel illuminate our own lives and so lighten the community around us. With every blessing. 2 Notes from the Editor This is my last edition as editor. I ve enjoyed the two-year cycle as assistant and then editor. I began thinking I could put something back into a community I love and perhaps in retirement get more involved locally. The latter wasn t to be but for the best of reasons. So I wish you well as I leave you in almost every sense of that word. Forgive a few words for our contributors. You are the lifeblood of NIB and if I ve occasionally over edited I apologise but we do try to get your key message across whilst preserving a house style that makes the NIB readable and more than just a series of disconnected articles. It helps if you can use Arial 12 and keep it in plain black and fully justified. The more you complicate it the greater the risk we mess it up! But please keep those wonderful snippets of village life flowing, stay well and we will go well, and God bless. Geoff Best St Michael and All Angels, Barton Turf With the Christmas season upon us thoughts will turn to Christmas Cards. We have some beautiful cards for sale in the church, including a new design for this year. The annual clothes collection will take place between 10 th to the 17 th December. As usual items may be left in the porch. St Martins Housing Trust inform me that they are particularly short of men s clothing and will appreciate any help in that area. During Advent our evening service on Sunday 10 th December at 4pm will be a Service of Waiting to which all are welcome. Our Nine Lessons and Carols will be at 11am on Christmas Day and Christingle this year will be on Sunday 28 th January at 4pm when we will light all the candles in order to make it a very special service. This service is particularly suitable for children as it makes a very good way to finish off Christmas as we pack away the crib during the service. Finally, may I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and best wishes for the New Year. On the Sundays in Advent, when we do not otherwise have a service at which we would light the appropriate Advent Candle, it has become our tradition that we meet for prayers and to light the candle. This occurs once this year, on Advent Sunday. Do feel free to join us then. The next one will be the Christmas Event on Saturday 2 nd December in Horning Village Hall. There will be cakes, jewellery, homemade jams etc, and of course raffle, coffee and mince pies and scones, 10am-noon. We will start 2018 on Saturday 6 th January at the usual place and time of 10am to 11.30ish, do come to start the New Year with friends, old and new. If walking the dog, jogging or pedalling with one (or more) of those plastic 5 notes in your pocket, call in to Applewood, Threehammer Common, Neatishead as you re passing by and we will relieve you of the money and hand over a calendar (or 2 or 3 or more). That s another present (or 2 or 3 or more) off your list. 3 St Swithin s Church, Ashmanaugh Thank you to everyone who came to our Autumn Fair in the Preston Rooms. It was great to see friends from other parishes there as well as residents of Ashmanhaugh. We raised 321, more than we had hoped. As we move into December the calendar begins to be very busy but I hope you will find time to come to some of the events in the village hall and the church. As usual we will get the children together to decorate the tree in the church, and I will try and arrange this on a date and time that suits as many as possible. Dates for your diary:- 10 th December 3pm Christingle a lovely family service to which everyone is very welcome. 15 th December 6.30pm Carol Service come and sing your hearts out to all the favourites and then afterwards munch on complementary mulled wine, mince pies and sausage rolls in the Preston Rooms while the Grand Christmas Draw is called. 25 th December 9.30am Holy Communion for Christmas Day. Anne Mulhall, Church Warden, Anne.mulhall1@btinternet.com Preston Rooms, Ashmanaugh How quickly time passes and we are once again at the end of the year of events at the Preston Rooms. In November we held our first Maker s Market - an incredible selection of crafts was on sale as well as tea, cake and soup lunches. I have to say a really big Thank You to everyone who made the event happen. We had an amazing time and raised 90 for the Preston Rooms, 32 for Alzheimer s Society, 147 for the British Red Cross and by selling our handmade poppies we raised 181 for the British Legion. See our Facebook page for photos. On Friday 15 th December the Christmas Thank You and Grand Draw will take place at around 7.30pm. As usual it follows the Christmas Carol Service at St Swithin s Church. Christmas Bingo on Saturday 16 th December at 7pm. This event is bound to be good fun and we are hoping that you will all join in. At the start of 2018 the committee will be putting their heads together to come up with fund raising events. If anyone has any suggestions, please let us know. We would also love to hear from you if you would like to become a Trustee as we are a very small team at present. Finally, on behalf of the Preston Rooms Committee may I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Sue Watts, Secretary An Evening spent in Antarctica Nearly 80 people enjoyed the evening spent in the company of Rose and Chris Buckley. Rose, the doctor daughter of Nick and Jo Drew, and her husband Chris gave an illustrated insight into life over a winter in Antarctica. What they did in both work and play during their period out there will long be remembered by those who filled the NVH. Just over 700 was raised at this event, all the money going towards the preservation and restoration of the oldest public building in Neatishead, namely St Peter s Church. Should any of you have moved to Neatishead in the last few years and have not heard of the Friends of St Peter (FoSP), please consider adding your name to its free membership. FoSP exists to raise funds and offer practical help towards the fabric of the church building. Its membership is open to all of any or no faith but have an interest in our historic public building and its maintenance for future generations. Dolly Newcombe Village Screen - The film to be shown this month on Monday 4 th December at 7.30pm is Hampstead, 12A 100 minutes running time. Widowed Emily (Diane Keaton) is adrift and struggling to keep her flat in London's upmarket Hampstead Village. She becomes intrigued by the self-sufficient recluse Daniel (Brendan Gleason) she discovers living in a shack in a quiet corner of Hampstead Heath. Please do come along and join us at our friendly Village Screen Cinema and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit included in the entrance fee of 5. If you have any special seating requirements please call Christine on PLEASE NOTE there will not be a Village Screen film showing in January 2018 as it would be 1 st January. The next Village Screen will be Monday 5 th February for details please see next issue of NIB and local notices. Bev Plummer Farmers Market in the NVH Saturday 9 th December 9am-noon. Lots of stalls do come along - you may be surprised at the variety of items on sale that would make wonderful gifts. Take time to enjoy a cup of tea and a chat the bacon rolls are great too! There is no Farmers Market in January (see notice BIG Community Breakfast) the next market is on Saturday 10 th February. 5 BroadBeat Choir Busy time for us as we are performing at a variety of locations this December singing Christmas songs as well as slipping in a few of our other songs into the programme. The venues are varied and require anywhere from 20 members at the Clare School (our Charity for 2017) to around 80 members at St Peter Mancroft Church in the centre of Norwich on Wednesday 20 th December, raising funds for the Alzheimer s Society. We are also at Wroxham Barns on Thursday 7 th December for their open evening to name but a few. The new term starts back at the NVH on Thursday 11 th January at 1.30pm everyone welcome, more details at broadbeatchoir.co.uk free taster session and no audition. We are a very friendly choir! Sandra, WISE Ladies It was lovely seeing so many at our AGM and to welcome three new members. After the business side of things we had a very productive evening preparing for the Christmas Fair on Saturday 2 nd December. Don t forget the WISE Ladies Nordic Walking Group are offering a Christmas Card Delivery Service to Neatishead, Irstead and Barton Turf - and the post boxes will be in the village store and White Horse Inn from the 2 nd December. All money collected will go towards the Neatishead fund raising for new playground equipment. (A suggested donation of 2 for as many cards as you like) delivery will be on Wednesday 20 th December. Lesley Smith NABS Diary Date and Request for Storage Surely you can t already have appointments for the evenings of both Friday 2 nd and Saturday 3 rd March? For whichever suits you better, please put on your calendar, diary, or scrap of paper - the forthcoming NABS production. We will not be doing a Panto next year (oh no we won t) but instead will treat you to two evenings with an entertaining mix of acting, music, song and dance. Do you have, or do you know of anyone in the area who has a barn, shed or garage that we could use for storage of our sets, props, costumes, etc? We are looking for a new long-term solution as soon as possible, but if you would be prepared to offer in the short term this may prove to be very welcome. Another option would be if you have a large shed that you no longer need, which we could move to an alternative site. Please contact me with offers or suggestions as soon as possible. Rachel Clayton, Women s Institute For our members of a certain age, our speaker Charlotte Philcox brought back a mixture of happy, sad and poignant memories when she spoke about WW2 memorabilia. Not that she could talk from experience, but her parents and grandparents had helped her put together a slide presentation and a range of items that would have been familiar in households from , including a ubiquitous tin of Spam! (To some of us, Spam means junk s, not a tinned meat product made mainly from ham!) It was an interesting talk and reminded us of the resourcefulness of those at home, the bravery of those serving or assisting the war effort and how women took over many of the jobs undertaken by men in their enforced absence. Pauline Simpson won 1 st prize in the competition with her harrowing and emotional display of papers, photos and artefacts from her father, who had been a PoW in the Far East. An unusually mild October evening was brightened up by a delicious Harvest Supper organised by our Committee, which was followed by a very entertaining talk on Marie Lloyd by local historian Rachel Duffield. Rachel, wearing a copy of Marie s fashionable Parisian directoire dress, related her history and sang a few of her wellknown music hall songs (who doesn t know the words to My old man said follow the van?) all agreed it was a very jolly evening. To ease us all into the Christmas mood, we will be running the bottle tombola stall at the NVH Christmas Fair on Saturday 2 nd December (donations gratefully accepted) and will then have our festive lunch at the Beechwood Hotel in North Walsham on Wednesday 6 th December, where gifts will be collected to be donated to the Priscilla Bacon Lodge patients. However, to work off all those extra festive fare calories, everybody - including family, friends and dogs - are welcome to join the happy band of WI walkers on Monday 1 st January, when Jane Mitchell will be leading a New Year walk on Barton foot paths please meet at the Barton Staithe Black Shed at 10am. The walk takes approximately 2 hours but may be shortened if the weather is bad. Monica Riley,

6 Wildlife Notes Having mentioned the Goldeneye duck that over winter at Barton Broad in my October notes I was pleased to record my first ones on the 30 th October this autumn and there are already about a dozen on the broad by mid-month. Residents of Irstead have been telling me about a Jay which has been roaming the village and seems extremely tame, even tapping on windows to be fed and taking food items from the hand. Visitors to the boardwalk have mentioned that it even follows them down the road from the staithe at Irstead when they have moored there. Autumn is the time of year when we see an increase in Jays in our gardens, firstly because they are busy collecting acorns from our oak trees and secondly because our numbers are swelled by visitors from Scandinavia. Jays are mainly woodland birds and will eat nuts, seeds and insects but will also take young birds from nests during the breeding season making them unpopular with some people. Jays are said to be able to collect and cache as many as 3000 acorns in the few weeks of autumn when they are available and can remember where they have hidden most of them. Usually the acorns are buried in a small hole in the ground and are carefully covered up so that rodents (or other jays) can t find them. The ones that do get forgotten will germinate next spring and can pop up in all sorts of unlikely places. Jays were probably responsible for planting many of the oak trees in the countryside before organised forestry took over. They are extremely vocal birds with a loud, harsh sounding call but apparently are also good mimics and have even been known to copy a Buzzard s call. During December and January if the weather is harsh in Europe we can expect to see visiting flocks of Bewicks and Whooper swans turning up on the grazing marshes. There is a regular flock of Whoopers on the Ludham marshes and they can often be seen in the fields next to the main road at Catfield sometimes mixed with smaller Bewicks. Both visiting species have yellow and black beaks in contrast with the orange beaks of our resident Mute swans. Jerry Simpson, , simpsonj24@btinternet.com Fly Tipping Instances of fly tipping of garden waste are on the increase, with more reports being received both on highway verges and on private land. We need to make you aware that although garden waste is biodegradable, it is still classed as waste, and it is still an offence to illegally deposit it under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 Section 33. Garden waste can mean any waste coming from your garden such as grass cuttings, tree branches, etc. There are a variety of ways to dispose of garden waste legally. You can take it to any of Norfolk s Recycling Centres where it will be taken away for composting. North Norfolk District Council offers a garden waste collection service, for a small annual fee. You can compost your garden waste on your own land. Home composting provides an excellent opportunity to use your garden waste in a resourceful manner and put nutrients straight back into your garden. We recognise many people are disposing of their garden waste properly and legally and therefore thank you for your consideration and co-operation. If you are a landowner, and you are having waste fly tipped on your land without your permission, please report this to us. We may be able to assist you with identifying the offenders using CCTV cameras or provide signage to help deter offenders. For further information on your domestic duty of care please go to: If you should see any incidents of fly tipping or witness the offence occurring please do not hesitate to contact the Environmental Protection Team at ep@north-norfolk.gov.uk. Diane Bradley, Barton Turf and Irstead Parish Clerk, Gardening Club Ben Potterton gave a thoroughly entertaining and informative talk at our October meeting about his travels in pursuit of rare and unusual plants, while trying to steer clear of the wildlife, such as crocodiles and big cats! Our next meeting is on Monday 18 th December at 7.30 pm when we will be having a quiz with fish and chip supper. The cost is 7 to include wine/fruit juice and nibbles. This is open to all members, visitors and guests. Please let me know if you are attending and place your food order by Thursday 14 th December at the latest. Our first meeting of 2018 is 15 th January at 7.30pm in the NVH when Simon Partridge will be giving a talk about How Hill. Simon is a very entertaining speaker so do come along. 7 Dog Walkers article in the November NIB Whilst agreeing whole heartedly with the article I do have a certain sympathy with anyone who has to walk miles carrying a pooh bag with ever rising aroma! To alleviate both problems more bins where bagged dog waste can be dropped off have been added. Deb Burnage Friends and Neighbours The Club had a very enjoyable coffee morning at the NVH, thanks to Pam Warren and her friends, singing lots of well-known songs and recitations. We had another interesting coffee morning with Mrs Nicola Hems from the Museum of the Broads. We thank her for the lovely slides and all the information of the work and running of the museum and also for the interesting booklet on its 21 st anniversary. Tell your children and grandchildren how you spent Christmas when you were their age. Look out those family photographs, check they have the names of people written on the back together with a date and place. Then think about the photos you take today where will they be in 10, 20, 50 years time? Floating on a cloud, or in a photo album for future generations to see? As 2018 approaches we will be commemorating 100 years since the Armistice of World War One I wonder how our lives will be viewed in 2118 by future generations? For our next meeting at Neatishead School on Wednesday 17 th January at 7.30pm we will be taking A Nostalgic Trip around the Northern Broads, a presentation by Neville Khambatta. Experience the rivers and broads as they were in days past and contrast with how they are today. All welcome, we look forward to seeing you there. Claire Penstone-Smith, , Pre-School We have had a great time these past few weeks finishing our topic on animals. We have learnt a variety of new songs and made a variety of animals using different media including paper plate polar bears, shape chicks, rabbit biscuits and clay caterpillars. The children are loving recording themselves using our new sound clips and buttons and they have already improved in confidence at speaking out loud to the group. This week we have had great fun doing our sponsored animal treasure hunt on the school field. The weather was kind to us and the children enjoyed running around trying to find all the cuddly animals. To end the week, staff and children dressed up in a variety of costumes including cats, rabbits, bats, bears, lions and unicorns! We are now busy with our Christmas crafts and song performance! Phew! 8 Knit and Stitch We are a friendly group who meet in the community room at the NVH for a knit and a natter twice a month. We are affiliated to Norfolk Knitters and Stitcher s who oversee knitting for many Norfolk based charities. We have the patterns, wool and needles all you need to get you started on a New Year project. If you can t knit or crochet but would like to know how we can help. If you have another craft you enjoy you are welcome to bring that along. Our meetings over the next couple of months are as follows: Wednesday 13 th December, Wednesday 10 th and Tuesday 23 rd January, 7-9pm. Do come along and join us or stop by our stall at the NVH Christmas Fair on Saturday 2 nd December. Claire Penstone-Smith, Horning Flower Club We had a most entertaining afternoon at the flower club with demonstrator Crystal Dyball. The competition was won by Rachael Clayton and second Maureen Smelt. Our next meeting on Monday 11 th December at 2pm with demonstrator Jacquie Aldous A Christmas Magic and competition A Table Arrangement (APM). This will be followed by our usual lovely Christmas tea. With musical accompaniment from Broadland High School students, we will be having a good old fashioned singsong. This free event is dementia friendly - booking advisable - call or pop in. With Refreshments. Christmas Crafts for all the Family Saturday 16 th December, 10 12pm Drop in to make some last minute Christmas cards or decorations. Free (donations accepted for materials). Colour me Calm Tuesday 5 th December 2-4pm. Not just for children, colouring is now recognised as a relaxing and enjoyable way to promote Wellbeing. This activity is dementia friendly. Templates and colouring materials provided, though feel free to bring your own.
