There may have been a slight excess of chocolate for some of the younger people! The Easter Monday Bank Holiday weather may have surprised us by raining only part of the day, or the weather may not have bothered us at all if we spent most of the day in A&E after some DIY mishap. Or we may have opted out of these British Easter traditions by doing something, or going somewhere, completely different. Either way, by 3 rd April most will be back into their home or work routines and looking forward to May Bank Holidays. Not so in the church! The events of the first Easter the devastation of Good Friday and the understatement of Easter morning He is not here. He is Risen are so history-changing that the party will go on, right through until Pentecost, as we remember all the occasions when Jesus spent time with the first disciples, after the resurrection and before his Ascension into heaven. In church on Sundays, one of the readings each week will be from the Acts of the Apostles, reminding us of how that first Easter so galvanised the apostles into action that the early church grew and spread like wild fire. Christ s birth, life and ministry, and particularly the events of that first Easter, are often said to be the pivotal moment in human history; the world would never be the same again. And yet much of the world did not change, and many people did not change. God did not wave a magic wand and return us all to the ignorant bliss of the Garden of Eden. Instead, he gave of himself, so that we might at last understand, individually and collectively, the true nature of our relationship with God the God who creates us, shares our humanity in his only Son, and through that Son changes, and continues to change, individual lives. Our task, at Eastertide and always, is to live our lives in the faith and hope that the Easter message brings, and in so doing to share that good news with the community around us so that all can become part of the celebration of Easter through out the year. 2 Did You Know? Where might you find a horse, a dove and an eagle all in one place? Or a bell cast in the time of Henry VIII, a table made from an old Barton school desk, or a sundial scratched on a stone? The answers, and lots more information, are found in a new Barton Turf church guide. The booklet contains a potted history of the church through the centuries since it was built in the 1300s, and has lots of beautiful colour illustrations. There is also a list of the church s ministers dating from 1199 (William de Gymingham) through to the present day (David R Smith). Research, writing and photography were painstakingly carried out by Jim Clinch and Michael Brandon-Jones - many thanks and congratulations to them. The guide is on sale in the church, price 3. Wendy Price St Michael and All Angels, Barton Turf It was good to see so many at the Mothering Sunday/Refreshment Sunday tea party. There was a simple service with the children giving percussion accompaniment to the hymns and then a most enjoyable chance for a good chat during the tea that followed. Many thanks to all those who contributed with gifts of food. Easter Day is on Sunday 1 st April this year! We will be having our usual Easter Day service at 11am followed by our egg hunt in the church. All are very welcome to come and join in the fun. Our APCM meeting is on Sunday 22 nd April at 10.30am. This is your chance to come and hear what the church has been doing over the last year and to ask questions. On the third Saturday in the month we will be having a coffee morning in the church, the first one being on 21 st April from 10am to 12noon. Come and have a cup of coffee, use the computer to look up information about the church, village, or families buried in the churchyard. People will be on hand to help with any investigative work that you wish to undertake, or just come for a coffee and a chat. Barbara Pilcher, Church Warden, Festival at Barton Church during Open Churches Week this August 9 th to 12 th It was good to see so many people in Barton Church at the planning meeting for this special event, themed What have you been watching? In other words TV Programmes. Thank you for coming and bringing all your exciting ideas. Well over thirty groups and individuals are taking part which is very encouraging. We will fill every space available in our beautiful church to create an event for the community and visitors to enjoy. If you have yet to let me know your choice it s not too late. 3 St Peter's, Neatishead Church Yard work party kicks off 2018 on Wednesday 4 th April at 9am. New volunteers always welcome. For more information contact Nick Fowle on Foodbank - St Peter s Church, Neatishead The Church Council is pleased to advise that St Peter s Church is now a base for collecting items for the Norwich Foodbank. A bin for collecting items has been placed in the area of the font to the right of the entrance and we would be most grateful for your donations. Items will provide local people in crisis with 3 days of food. Donations have to be non-perishable and within date. At the moment there is a particular request for tinned fish, instant mash and long-life sponge puddings. Thanking you in advance for your generosity in helping us provide for this most worthy cause. Pauline Simpson, Church Warden, Annual Plant Sale for Neatishead Church This year our Plant Sale will be held on Saturday 5 th May from 12noon to 3pm at the home of Nick and Maria Jordan, The Old Vicarage, Horning Road, Neatishead, NR12 8YE. There will be the usual plant and cake stalls as well as a raffle and ploughman s lunches. If you have any cuttings, plants or seedlings to spare we would welcome them, also any donations of cakes would also be much appreciated. Plants can be delivered to me before the sale if necessary. Jane Fowle, St Benet s Coffee Morning, Horning The March coffee morning was much enjoyed by the brave who beat the snow and was raised towards Church funds. The next one will be on Saturday 7 th April at the usual time of 10am to 11.30ish. There will be homemade cakes, marmalade, books, raffle and of course coffee and scones. Do come to meet old friends and make new ones at this happy occasion. Gillian Jeckells The Preston Rooms, Ashmanhaugh Well, we have got to April! Personally I couldn t wait for the clocks to change and have more time to spend outside. Winter has been far too long and far too cold. If we are lucky by the time we get to Easter our gardens won t be so bare and the weather will be warm enough to enjoy the long weekend (and hotcross buns, and chocolate...). By the time you read this we will have held our AGM and set things up for the forthcoming year. We have had a resignation on our Committee and so we are looking for someone to become Treasurer. Please, please, think if you could take this role on as it will be difficult to continue without a Treasurer. Any member of the Committee will be happy to give more information, just ask! The Calendar of Events has been produced and should be on the Noticeboards for you all to see. As usual, we have tried to hold an event most months of the year, all we need is your support to make them worthwhile. The next event is Poetry Evening being held on Friday 6 th April at 7pm. Come along for an evening of poetry. Bring a favourite poem to read, have it read by someone else, or just sit back and enjoy listening. Entry is 3 including refreshments. If you would like further information telephone Aileen on Sue Watts, Secretary Poor s or Fuel Allotment Charity Following the retirement and departure of two of the trustees of the Neatishead Poor s or Fuel Allotment Charity we are seeking two replacements from within the Neatishead village boundary. The charity was originally set up to provide fuel for the poor of this parish, this is still the case though diggings of peat have been replaced by money and its scope widened to include those suffering from ill health and disability irrespective of age. The trustees meet annually towards the end of the year to allocate funds to those who have successfully applied. Other meetings, of which there are few, depend on matters that arise during the course of the year. All discussions are held in confidence as will be any application for these two vacancies. Last month s high light was the scotch eggs yummy!! Village Screen Cinema As the first Monday in April falls on 2 nd April which is a Bank Holiday we are moving the April film to Monday 9 th April. We will be showing VICTORIA and ABDUL (cert PG13, running time 1hr 52m) starting at 7.30pm. This film is the fascinating real life tale of the unlikely friendship between the aged Queen Victoria (Judy Dench) and an Indian servant named Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal). Please do come along and join us at the NVH from 7pm and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit (included in the price of 5). Tomorrow I ll do some exercise, tomorrow I must think about getting fitter, tomorrow.well hey! It IS tomorrow, seize the day and make a difference! It s easy to make excuses and hard to make the effort, but the effort can bring big rewards and can make you glad that today, you began that journey to a fitter you. Clare Costello Gardening Club A pleasing number of members and visitors attended our February meeting when Robert Maidstone gave an illustrated talk on wild flowers in the garden, sharing his knowledge of what to look for and where - even in the gravelled drive! Our next meeting is on Monday 16 th April at 7.30pm in the NVH, when Geoff Freeman, who is one of the judges at our annual show, will be giving tips on Preparing for a Show - note pads at the ready! We also hold our Spring Flower Show that evening. This is a fun event, providing a lovely splash of colour, so please bring along your entries and vases on the night. Please contact me if you would like a schedule or want more information about the club. Jane King, NABS Words and Music.. LIVE!!! Unfortunately NABS fell victim to the inclement weather in March. Apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused but we felt that the safety of performers and audience was paramount. Due to the popularity of the NVH and the commitments of some of our key performers, we are having to hold our rescheduled performance on one night ONLY, which is Friday 6 th April starting 7.30pm. Tickets purchased for either of the previous dates will be valid for the new performance date, but if you are now unable to attend please contact Jude McGill on or jude@hmcgill.com for a refund. 5 Coffee Morning at the Nancy Oldfield Trust - Saturday 28 th April, 10-12noon The annual coffee morning to support the Trust has been running now for many years. In a little break with the tradition of being at the NVH, this year you are invited to come along to our Centre on Irstead Road to enjoy a cup of coffee and a cake in our Volunteers Room. Provided the work on our new slipway is complete we plan to be running two of our accessible motor cruisers for free short trips out towards the Broad. We wanted to offer the opportunity to all our supporters in the community to have a look around the Centre and to see what we do. If you have not been to the Trust before you can find us 200 yards along from the White House Stores Community Shop on Irstead Road. We have a modest sized car park so please share lifts if you can or arrive on foot or bicycle! We look forward to seeing you. Stephen Bradnock, Centre Manager, Midsummer Art and Craft Fair The Artists of the Two Rivers and the Nancy Oldfield Trust are even now planning our second Midsummer Art and Craft Fair on 7 th and 8 th July. We hope you will put the date on your calendar - more details nearer the time. Kit Calladine, for the Two Rivers Artists Women s Institute We don t often play Bingo at our meetings but we made an exception in our February meeting for a good cause. Our speaker, Tracey Baldwin, told us about Dementia Friends, an Alzheimer s Society initiative, for people who have learned a little bit more about what it's like to live with dementia and then turn that understanding into action. Because public understanding is so poor, people with dementia often feel and are misunderstood, marginalised and isolated. And that means that they are less likely to be able to live independently in their own communities. Tracey explained that we urgently need to create a climate of kindness and understanding, so that everyone affected by dementia feels part of, not apart from, society. Certainly food for thought. And food featured in our competition where Sally Church, our recent past President, won 1 st prize for her stunningly attractive iced biscuits. (Why bingo? you may be asking Tracey used bingo cards to make us think about words that describe the effects of Dementia.) Monica Riley, Barton Turf Bowls Club The bowls season is upon us once more. It s time to dust off your shoes and bowls and come along to roll ups to get rid of the winter blues. We are always happy to welcome new members, it does not matter in the slightest if you have never played before, you are welcome to come and have a go. We are a small, welcoming club. The first roll up is on Monday 30 th April at 7pm at the bowling green. Come and give us a go! Barbara Pilcher Neatishead White Horse Bowls Club Three Hammer Common Opening date Saturday 21 st April at 1.30pm - along with bring-and-share afternoon tea. Everyone welcome whether you have played in the past or not. We have a friendly roll-up amongst ourselves every Saturday (everyone welcome even if you are visiting the area) bowls can be borrowed and no experience needed. Just come along and give it a go! We play in two leagues and are always looking for players to join the teams too. It will take place on Thursday 26 th April at 7.30pm in the NVH. This is a perfect chance for you to come along and find out what is going on from the various organisations/groups/clubs in your village as well as to raise any issues or things that you would like to see or happen. The Parish Council always encourages ideas and suggestions from you to ensure that you are able to continue to enjoy your village. Please come and enjoy a relaxed evening with refreshments served. 6 Wildlife Notes The snow fall at the start of March brought a flurry of activity at my bird table and on the feeders. Amongst the regular visitors were four Fieldfares and a Redwing, both members of the thrush family from Scandinavia searching for food on the ground. Fieldfares are very fond of old apples and are often seen scavenging in orchards under the fruit trees. By the time you read this many of the winter thrushes will be on their way back north. I was also visited by three Siskins feeding on the sunflower hearts in front of my kitchen window where I could enjoy close up views. On a visit to the boardwalk during the cold snap, when the broad was half frozen over, I spotted a pair of Pintail duck in amongst the Tufted duck, Pochard, Gadwall, Teal, Goldeneye and Coot. Pintail are one of my favourite ducks and as they are dabbling ducks they prefer shallow, marshy pools or the edges of estuaries and are not often seen on the larger expanses of water. You can often see them during the winter from the visitor centre at Cley in the pools nearest to the road. The male bird is very elegant with a brown head, white neck and mostly grey body but with long black tail feathers protruding a long way back from its body hence its name. The female is a more drab coloured brown but with a pointed tail and a slender neck. There are only a small number of breeding birds in the UK and it is described as a rare breeder in Norfolk. Ringing recoveries have shown that the majority of the birds wintering in Britain and Holland originate from Western Siberia although some come from Iceland and Scandinavia. Early in March I was alerted to a female Kestrel that had been seen near Neatishead church sitting on the ground in a field. The bird, when approached, only flew a short distance away keeping low to the ground and soon alighting nearby. It didn t appear to be injured and looked in good condition. If any readers have seen this bird exhibiting similar behaviour I would be interested to hear from them. In April migration will be in full swing so look out for the first Swallow of summer, the first Brimstone butterfly and enjoy the dawn chorus. All welcome do bring your own project or come and get some ideas for a new one. I should like to take this opportunity to thank all those who bring me wool, magazines and other craft materials they no longer need. If we cannot use them in the group, they will be taken to the Norfolk Knitters Wool Loft ( where everything is sorted and recycled, or donated to the Big C Craft Supplies Shop in Wymondham. Claire Penstone-Smith, Friends and Neighbours Report At the club coffee morning in the NVH we had a session of Bingo thanks to Doreen and Jean. At our next meeting we had an interesting talk on Homeguard thanks to Darren Stride. We also had cake and wine to celebrate John s 90 th Birthday. Community Heritage Group (NIBCHG) The Last True Countryman a booklet produced last year to celebrate the lives of Sid (also known as Cuddy ) and Betty Pestell, who for many years lived in The Street, Neatishead (opposite The White Horse) has been reprinted. Sid, born and brought up in Irstead, met Betty while working on Irstead Hall Farm during WW2 where she too was working as a member of the Women s Land Army. To find out more about life in our villages in days gone, copies can be purchased at our monthly meetings or Farmers Markets. All proceeds will be donated to the group. Claire Penstone-Smith, At the next meeting on Wednesday 18 th April, 7.30pm at NVH, we d like to cover three things. First, to take a look at house history, which will have been the focus of the display at the Farmers Market the previous weekend. If you ve anything you d like to share on Neatishead, please contact me on neatishead@sky.com or Second, with the centennial anniversary of the WWI Armistice coming up in November, although we ll offer our ideas we d like to invite contributions on the sorts of areas that you think would be of general interest under the banner Let s look forward, not back. 7 RAF Air Defence Radar Museum, Neatishead A restored Nuclear War Reporting Room, a Tornado Cockpit and a German WWII aircraft canon are among the exciting new attractions at the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum as it opens for RAF 100 Anniversary season. The museum will be celebrating the centenary of the RAF which was formed on 1 st April The museum has doubled its opening times and will now be open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday through to the end of the autumn half term at the beginning of November. The museum is open from 10am - 5pm and in addition to the regular open days, is also open on Easter Bank Holiday Monday and the two May bank holiday Mondays as well as the summer one. There will be exhibitors showing luxury cruisers, sailing boats plus other marine services. There will also be attractions for all the family including fashion shows, classic cars, musical entertainment and fun for the children. Over 100 exhibitors take part in this charity event raising funds for local good causes. Free entry to the show, free parking at BeWilderwood and a shuttle bus to the show. We have a food court offering speciality food and drinks, plus the local eateries in Horning. Being a charity event donations are welcome. A great day out for all the family. Find us at or telephone Horning Flower Club We had a super afternoon with one of our most popular demonstrators, David Wright, his demonstration was entitled It s an Education with flower arrangements all representing school subjects. They were stunning! This was followed by a lovely tea of jam and cream scones and birthday cake organised by our catering team to celebrate the Emerald Birthday of Horning Flower Club. The competition was won by Rachel Clayton and second Carole Swan. The next meeting will be on Monday 9 th April with demonstrator Moira Neville Second Hand Rose and competition Any Old Thing. New members are always welcome and if you require any further information please contact Maureen Smelt on Janet Smith Lions Clubs celebrates a Century of Service at Buckingham Palace The Countess of Wessex G.C.V.O. as Patron of Lions Clubs of the British Isles held a Royal Reception at Buckingham Palace in February to celebrate a Century of Service. Hundreds of Lions members joined together for the 100 th Birthday of Lions Clubs International to celebrate this landmark anniversary with the organisations partners. Lions Clubs International has 1.4 million members in over 200 countries, making it the largest service club organisation in the world. Wherever you live, work or travel, you are likely to come across members of Lions clubs and the projects we support. Lions are ordinary people who do extraordinary things to help others and support good causes. Globally we have more volunteers in more places than any other service club organisation. We love to help others and make things happen. Every day Lions are having fun by organising remarkable and memorable fundraising activities. Every year, in Europe alone, Lions Clubs members volunteer almost 6 million hours of service, and raise 88 million annually to support the needs of local communities. Wroxham and Hoveton Lions Club has supported local and international causes for the last 43 years and will continue to do so with your help. 8 Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios This is one of the largest and most successful open studio schemes in the UK. Many local artists, sculptors and crafts persons specialising in their own craft such as ceramics, pottery, collage, digital art, drawing, illustration, furniture making, glass, jewellery, metalwork, enameling, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, lettering, textiles, weaving, woodcarving, to name a few! There are Art Trails, Events, Demonstrations and Taster Exhibitions too. Something for everybody to enjoy even a Charity Bring and Buy Café at the weekends at a riverside studio in Brimbelow Road, Hoveton, NR12 8UJ (raising funds to help people with Dementia). Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2018 will take place from Saturday 26 th May - Sunday 10 th June. Not all studios and locations are open full time, some just at weekends - several are tucked away but well worth the hunt please refer to brochure before venturing out on a wonderful journey of discovery. For 16 days each year, Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios celebrates the county s artists and their achievements by offering them the opportunity to open their doors to the public to exhibit, sell and talk about their work. Last year saw over 500 artists taking part in 254 venues across Norfolk. 13 Norfolk Schools were also involved, showing the exceptional artistic talent of young people in the county. It is one of the largest and most successful open studio schemes in the country. It gives visitors the opportunity to see new art, meet artists, and - with many of the works on display being for sale - to buy original artwork directly from their creators. Studios are FREE to visit and visitors don't need to book in advance, unless they are a large group. The Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios (NNOS) brochure is a valuable part of the scheme for both artists and visitors. It contains details of all the artists and schools taking part during that year, and images of artwork and location maps, as well as details of the Art Trails and Events organised by artists. From April, the free NNOS brochures can be picked up from Norfolk libraries, Tourist Information Centres and other local venues and cafes across the region. By the time this note appears in The NIB, I hope we re all basking in soft spring sunshine, but right now (2 nd March) a glacial easterly is blasting the snow horizontally through our villages.
