St Mary s West Chiltington Parish Profile 2016
The Village West Chiltington is a large village with a population of around 3,600. The parish area is almost wholly residential. There is a very small traditional village centre with public house, post office and the Church St. Mary s. There is a second hub in the more recent part of the village with a handful of shops. There are a few farms, vineyards, one golf course and a popular hotel. West Chiltington has two pubs and there is a post office/café near to the Rectory. Local amenities in the area include golf, gliding, shooting and even polo. More commonly accessible are the delights of walking either around the village on a network of public footpaths or on the South Downs. The coast is some 12 miles away. West Chiltington is equidistant from Guildford, Brighton and Chichester, all of which offer a good mix of cultural activity. London is just over an hour away on a frequent train service and Horsham has a more local range of facilities. There are those who have retired to the parish and those who are younger and still working often in Horsham, Gatwick or further afield. There is little (if any) ethnic diversity. The church itself has a faithful core with great potential in the village to reach out and increase the congregation. The village school (which is close to the Rectory) has about 180 children up to the age of 10 years although this will change in September 2017 when they will go up to the age of 11 years this will increase the number of children at the school to 210. It is a local authority school which has grown stronger in the past few years. Sometimes in the past the parish priest has been a Governor but not always. Village children travel to Steyning or Billingshurst for local authority secondary education. There are a number of clubs in the village run by the active members of the retired community. Probus, theatre visits, WI, amateur dramatics, horticultural, jazz and folk music etc... There is a Guide company and a Brownie pack. There are no hospitals in the parish. Both Storrington and Pulborough have modern surgeries. Patients taken into hospital go either to Worthing (15 miles) or to Chichester (20 miles). Given the age of a large part of the local population trips to these hospitals are important. There are some small private nursing homes in the parish and one council-funded retirement complex (Kensington Close) where there is a monthly communion service given by the church. A substantial number of the congregation are elderly widows. A number who are immobile receive communion at home. 2
St Mary s Church St. Mary s Church is an architectural delight and was constructed between 1100 and 1150 and holds about 150 (when absolutely packed). The Church has extensive wall paintings and a modern vestry which gives a meeting room, priest s room, small washing up room and a WC. The porch is reputed to be the oldest in Sussex and the wood is thought to be 13 th century. The Church is well sited and gives easy access. The Church fabric is well maintained and is managed by our Fabric Supervisor. There is a Church hall close by with useful parking, this is also looked after by our Fabric Supervisor. Unusually for a village of this size there are no other centres for public worship in the parish. The Churchyard surrounds the Church and contains our Garden of Remembrance. It is used for burials and has space for approximately 10 years. The Churchyard is well maintained and the expense is met by PCC funds. The Church owns adjacent land for continuing this duty. On this land is sited the old youth club hut no longer in use. 3
The Parish We have an active congregation, this does consist of mainly adults, there are a handful of children who are brought to the church on the odd occasion, usually at the family service once a month. This is an area we really would hope to develop further, but one that we feel is not unusual to just our church. Generally at services we would see about 10/20 at the 8 am said communion, 60/70 at the 10 am Service, 10/12 at evensong and 8/10 at the 10 am Wednesday communion. There are at present 133 people on the electoral roll most of whom live in the parish. During the past year we have had: 11 weddings 1 wedding blessing 13 funerals 9 cremations 3 memorials 7 baptisms 4
The Rectory A large, brick built 5/6 bedroom house dating from approximately 1932 with extensive garden laid mainly to lawn. There is a large entrance hall with staircase and galleried landing leading to the bedrooms. The master bedroom has fitted wardrobes along one wall. The bathroom is fitted with a washbasin, bath, shower and W.C. Downstairs there is a good sized sitting room and a separate dining room. A fully fitted family kitchen/breakfast room and a large downstairs cloakroom fitted with washbasin, W.C and power shower. There is also a decent sized study to which there is access from outside as well as from the house. This means any visitors to the Rector do not have to walk through the house to get to his/her study. The house is fully double glazed with UPVC window frames and has full gas central heating. There is a large garage and behind this is the parish office which has its own entrance. There is a gardener employed to mow lawns and trim any shrubs and he comes once a fortnight. This is paid for by the PCC. There is an annual budget of 500 for redecorating the Rectory. 5
Music We have just had a new organ fitted, a Westmoreland 41, and it has made a wonderful addition to our services with, of course, our very talented music director and established choir. This also will be work in progress as we are always on the lookout for new members of the choir to swell the ranks. Every week the Ladies that Boogie, a ladies choir from the village, come and rehearse in our church and at least twice a year hold a concert in the church of light music and song, all proceeds go to the church fabric fund which we feel is an extremely kind and generous thing to do. We have a group of musicians who regularly play in church, particularly at the family service on the 2 nd Sunday of the month, and also do concerts for our enjoyment, of both spiritual and popular arrangements. 6
Services St. Mary s offers a wide range of services as follows: Sunday 8.00 am A quiet Common Worship Eucharist. Usually 10/20 attends with a thriving coffee and chat afterwards. The service is taken from the BCP on the first Sunday of each month. Sunday am This is the parish principal service being taken from Common Worship and giving a sung Eucharist. It is a relatively traditional service for a mostly retired congregation which usually numbers 60/70. Sunday 6.00 pm BCP Evensong held twice each month. Very traditional, supported by a few faithful people. Second Sunday each month am we have a very lively family service which is both spiritually uplifting and full of fun. There is an overhead projection used and we are able to read the words of hymns and prayers from this. We also have our wonderful music group who play varied instruments and give us their beautiful voices to help us during the service. A charismatic and interactive service. Fifth Sunday each month 6.00 pm We have a Simple Service with Hymns which gives the opportunity for parishioners to select and sing their favourite hymns. First Tuesday am Once a month on the first Tuesday a communion service is held at Kensington Close for the residents and others to attend. Wednesday am Every Wednesday there is a said communion service and afterwards coffee and the chance to catch up with friends and neighbours. At present the Rector also has a prayer time every Tuesday to Friday at 9 am, this is an open invitation to join him in prayer before the start of another busy day. 7
Personnel and Parish Activities The Rector Church Wardens : Mrs. Diane Bennett and Mrs. Pam Wells Parish Administrator: Mrs. Diane Bennett Organist: Mr. Tony Hancock Fabric Office: Dr. Norman Boyland PCC Secretary: Mrs. Ali Littleboy Treasurer: Mr. David Ellis Church Hall Administrator: Mrs. Brenda Bull House Groups, there are two running at the moment but it is hoped an ALPHA course will be run as soon as possible. Parish magazine, edited by a parishioner and published by someone within the village, it has a large circulation throughout the village and beyond. Friendship lunches. Run once a month on the third Thursday in the Church Hall. This is a totally charitable event, we get from 30/44 people every month, this is an outreach programme. Concerts throughout the year. Fundraising throughout the year in various ways. 8
Needs The parish needs a priest that can care for the parishioners just as they wish for a priest they can care for. The parish needs a people person who can relate to a variety of individuals and worship types. A people person is a common request and, indeed, is repeated here. In addition West Chiltington seeks a spiritual person to lead us in a Christ-like way. We need a prayerful priest of sincere faith who can deliver an engaging sermon that is scripturally sound and who has a love of sacramental encounter. The parish will be supportive to its new priest recognising the demands of ministry. We see our objectives as: Preaching the word in the parish Reaching out in the parish and spreading the love of God through West Chiltington Helping the church take a central place in village life Being active in the pastoral ministry of the church Maintaining our diverse range of service In summary, we seek a passionate and dynamic priest to love us and one we can love and cherish too. 9
