3 Let's prepare for our Italian Experience with the Knights Italian cuisine (Italian: cucina italiana [ku'ti:na ita'lja:na]) has developed through centuries of social and political changes, with roots stretching to antiquity. Significant changes occurred with the discovery of the New World and the introduction of potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers and maize, now central to the cuisine but not introduced in quantity until the 18th century. Italian cuisine is noted for its regional diversity, abundance of difference in taste, and it is probably the most popular in the world, with influences abroad. Italian cuisine is characterized by its simplicity, with many dishes having only four to eight ingredients. Italian cooks rely chiefly on the quality of the ingredients rather than on elaborate preparation. Italian cuisine is also well known (and well regarded) for its use of a diverse variety of pasta. Pasta include noodles in various lengths, widths and shapes. Distinguished on shapes they are named penne, maccheroni, spaghetti, linguine, fusilli, lasagna and many more varieties that are filled with other ingredients like ravioli and tortellini. Each area has its own specialties, primarily at a regional level, but also at provincial level. For example, Venice and many surrounding parts of Veneto are known for risotto, a dish whose ingredients can highly vary upon different areas, as fish and seafood being added closer to the coast and pumpkin, asparagus, radicchio and frogs' legs appearing further away from the Adriatic. Italy has a strong sense of national identity through distinctive culture - a sense of an appreciation of beauty and emotionality, which is strongly evidenced in the music. Cultural, political and social issues are often also expressed through music in Italy. The music of Italy ranges across a broad spectrum of opera and instrumental classical music and a body of popular music drawn from both native and imported sources. Music has traditionally been one of the cultural markers of Italian national and ethnic identity and holds an important position in society and in politics. Le Chevalier Mar pg.3 Italian folk music has a deep and complex history. Because national unification came late to the Italian peninsula, the traditional music of its many hundreds of cultures exhibit no homogeneous national character. Rather, each region and community possesses a unique musical tradition that reflects the history, language, and ethnic composition of that particular locale. Prepare to live an Italian Experience early June at the Parish. Spread the word with your family and friends. Source: wikipedia.org

4 Saint of the Month St. Patrick Le Chevalier Mar pg.4 There is hope rather than irony in the fact that his burial place is said to be in County Down in Northern Ireland, long the scene of strife and violence. Legends about Patrick abound; but truth is best served by our seeing two solid qualities in him: He was humble and he was courageous. The determination to accept suffering and success with equal indifference guided the life of God s instrument for winning most of Ireland for Christ. Details of his life are uncertain. Current research places his dates of birth and death a little later than earlier accounts. Patrick may have been born in Dunbarton, Scotland, Cumberland, England, or in northern Wales. He called himself both a Roman and a Briton. At 16, he and a large number of his father s slaves and vassals were captured by Irish raiders and sold as slaves in Ireland. Forced to work as a shepherd, he suffered greatly from hunger and cold. Comment: St. Patrick, oro pro nobis. After six years, Patrick escaped, probably to France, and later returned to Britain at the age of 22. His captivity had meant spiritual conversion. He may have studied at Lerins, off the French coast; he spent years at Auxerre, France, and was consecrated bishop at the age of 43. His great desire was to proclaim the Good News to the Irish. In a dream vision it seemed all the children of Ireland from their mothers wombs were stretching out their hands to him. He understood the vision to be a call to do mission work in pagan Ireland. Despite opposition from those who felt his education had been defective, he was sent to carry out the task. He went to the west and north, where the faith had never been preached, obtained the protection of local kings and made numerous converts. Because of the island s pagan background, Patrick was emphatic in encouraging widows to remain chaste and young women to consecrate their virginity to Christ. He ordained many priests, divided the country into dioceses, held Church councils, founded several monasteries and continually urged his people to greater holiness in Christ. He suffered much opposition from pagan druids and was criticized in both England and Ireland for the way he conducted his mission. What distinguishes Patrick is the durability of his efforts. When one considers the state of Ireland when he began his mission work, the vast extent of his labors (all of Ireland) and how the seeds he planted continued to grow and flourish, one can only admire the kind of man Patrick must have been. The holiness of a person is known only by the fruits of his or her work. Quote: Christ shield me this day: Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I arise, Christ in the heart of every person who thinks of me, Christ in the eye that sees me, Christ in the ear that hears me (from The Breastplate of St. Patrick ). Patron Saint of: Engineers Ireland Nigeria In a relatively short time, the island had experienced deeply the Christian spirit, and was prepared to send out missionaries whose efforts were greatly responsible for Christianizing Europe. Patrick was a man of action, with little inclination toward learning. He had a rocklike belief in his vocation, in the cause he had espoused. One of the few certainly authentic writings is his Confessio, above all an act of homage to God for having called Patrick, unworthy sinner, to the apostolate.

5 My dear Brothers: Back in August 1966, as I was making plans to move to Maryland, my own church in Dayton, Ohio, Church of our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, was completing a new church building. We had been attending Mass in what had been a pool room. It was several years before I was able to attend Mass in the new church, but they sent me the dedication book in October Since we are coming toward the completion of our own new church building, I thought I d share with you the prayer written by Msgr. Sherman, our pastor. Fraternally, Jerry Wood PRAYER Le Chevalier Mar pg.5 before you. There we shall come to pray before your divine presence, knowing that the church is your house and our house, your tabernacle and our tabernacle, where you meet us and we meet you, where you give yourself to us, and we can give ourselves and our gifts to you. Truly, as members of your Mystical Body, O Jesus, you give us the privilege of being with you in your church and in your tabernacle, by day and by night. There we are really united mystically to you and to all other members of your Mystical Body. Help us, then O God, to build this church with generous hearts and grateful wills, giving our best gifts to you. Lead us to sacrifice for you, as you have sacrificed for us upon the blood-stained Cross. Amen. By Rt. Rev. Msgr. James E. Sherman, S.T.D., Pastor, Church of our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Dayton, Ohio Dedicated October 2, 1966 O my God, as you have come to me when your Divine Son became Man, so I have come to you to be your child, when I was baptized. You give yourself daily to me in our parish church. There I can come and be very close to you. Help us to build a new church that will be truly worthy of your holiness, of your goodness, and of our love for you. There, we pray, may our faith become stronger each year, and our hearts more devoted each time we will kneel Sign up to donate blood after all masses At the Knights of Columbus Blood Drive on Sunday morning Date: March 13, 2016 And May 15, 2016 Imprimatur: + PAUL F. LEIBOLD, D.D. Vicar General Cincinnati, Feb. 4, 1963 You don t have to be a doctor to save lives: Just donate Blood.
