I hope all of you will work with me at trying to inspire all members of our council to become involved, even if it is just by cleaning up after a pancake breakfast. We have many new members who aren t acquainted with the guys who have been working for the council for years. Come on out and meet them. They are very fine gentlemen with whom you ll enjoy spending some time. We have many interesting projects coming up: the Ice Cream social will be our first endeavor, and we re doing it on August 19 th this year. It s our open house to the Parish. There are many more; pick one that interests you and spend some time helping your brothers put an event together. We re also planning to have our Officers Installation and Dinner Le Chevalier in August, but the date is TBA. (Cf. p. 10 for more coming events.) We welcome our newest Sir Knight to the Council. SK Michael Dill was the only Sir Knight from our Assembly this year. (Pix on p. 7.) There are quite a few 3 rd Degree Knights in our council who might want to consider becoming a Sir Knight next year. Michael has stepped up to serve as our 3- year Trustee this year. We have an extraordinarily large number of 1 st Degree Knights in our Council, who, I hope, will become 3 rd Degree in the coming year. We will keep you informed. We have planned a schedule that will keep us busy this year, but the events are spread out a little more this year. I hope that change will attract more brothers to serve. Another item to point out is that this edition of Le Chevalier is the first issue in our third year of publication. I hope you read it regularly, and once again, I request articles and pictures from you. God bless you all! Vivat Jesus! Fraternally, Jerry Wood Worthy Grand Knight If anyone says, I love God, but hates his brother, he is a liar 1 John 4:20

3 Volume 3 Issue 1 Le Chevalier July 2017 p.3 Saint of the Month Blessed Franz Jägerstätter (May 20, 1907 August 9, 1943) Blessed Franz Jägerstätter s Story Called to serve his country as a Nazi solider, Franz eventually refused, and this husband and father of three daughters Rosalie, Marie and Aloisia was executed because of it. Born in St. Radegund in Upper Austria, Franz lost his father during World War I and was adopted after Heinrich Jägerstätter married Rosalia Huber. As a young man, he loved to ride his motorcycle and was the natural leader of a gang whose members were arrested in 1934 for brawling. For three years he worked in the mines in another city and then returned to St. Radegund, where he became a farmer, married Franziska and lived his faith with quiet but intense conviction. In 1938, he publicly opposed the German Anschluss, annexation, of Austria. The next year, he was drafted into the Austrian army, trained for seven months and then received a deferment. In 1940, Franz was called up again but allowed to return home at the request of the town s mayor. He was in active service between October 1940 and April 1941, but was again deferred. His pastor, other priests, and the bishop of Linz urged him not to refuse to serve if drafted. In February 1943, Franz was called up again and reported to army officials in Enns, Austria. When he refused to take the oath of loyalty to Hitler, he was imprisoned in Linz. Later he volunteered to serve in the medical corps but was not assigned there. During Holy Week Franz wrote to his wife: Easter is coming and, if it should be God s will that we can never again in this world celebrate Easter together in our intimate family circle, we can still look ahead in the happy confidence that, when the eternal Easter morning dawns, no one in our family circle shall be missing so we can then be permitted to rejoice together forever. He was transferred in May to a prison in Berlin. hands. I know that, if I do what I think God wants me to do, he will take care of my family. On August 8, 1943, Franz wrote to Fransizka: Dear wife and mother, I thank you once more from my heart for everything that you have done for me in my lifetime, for all the sacrifices that you have borne for me. I beg you to forgive me if I have hurt or offended you, just as I have forgiven everything My heartfelt greetings for my dear children. I will surely beg the dear God, if I am permitted to enter heaven soon, that he will set aside a little place in heaven for all of you. Franz was beheaded and cremated the following day. In 1946, his ashes were reburied in St. Radegund near a memorial inscribed with his name and the names of almost 60 village men who died during their military service. He was beatified in Linz on October 26, His spiritual testam ent is now in Rome s St. Bartholomew Church as part of a shrine to 20thcentury martyrs for their faith. Reflection Franz Jägerstätter followed his conscience and paid the highest price possible. In December 2008, his widow and three daughters were introduced to Pope Benedict XVI in connection with the presentation of a new biography, Christ or Hitler? The Life of Blessed Franz Jaegerstaetter. Many people first learned about him from Gordon Zahn s book In Solitary Witness: The Life and Death of Franz Jaegerstaetter. Challenged by his attorney that other Catholics were serving in the army, Franz responded, I can only act on my own conscience. I do not judge anyone. I can only judge myself. He continued, I have considered my family. I have prayed and put myself and my family in God s Memorial for Franz Jägerstätter in St. Radegund Photo:Sziklai The Liturgical Feast of Blessed Franz Jägerstätter is May 21. If anyone destroys God s temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy. 1 Corinthians 3:17

I have coverage, but after yesterday I can tell you I wouldn t mind having more. Life can and does change in an instant. Do not wait and DO NOT let Brother Knights wait. Tempus Fugit Momento Mori. If this sounds like I am checking out, I am not. By our next meeting I should know much more and be on the road to recovery. Vivat Jesus! Matt Jones Field Agent Knights of Columbus In the Army there is a thing we do called the Bottom Line Up Front or BLUF that I think is a great way to start with a complicated issue. So here it is, yesterday my doctor confirmed that I have some issues with a mass in my Cecum (where large and small intestine meet) and several lesions in my liver. The largest is around 5cm. I am sure you all have questions and for now I still have many myself, I should meet with a GI doctor soon and start to develop a plan. We are assuming the worst case scenario that they must be dealt with ASAP. We do not know for sure if they are cancerous or not. I served for almost 28 years in the Army and have faced my own mortality more times than I care to remember and this time is no different. I will keep the faith that God has more work for me to accomplish here and look for ways to keep doing it. I also want to let you know that I feel as though I have walked among Giants for many years. Those that take on the tough jobs that God has selected them for and risen to the occasion. Many of them were in my years as a soldier and currently working with you and the councils. You guys are my heroes. This is a demanding job and all of you work selflessly and sacrifice much to get it done. Raso Agency Sadly, our Brother Knight and Field Agent Matt Jones of the Raso Agency here in Arizona, passed away on Friday, June 23, 2017 at 2:05pm. In a very short 14 days from when he sent his letter to his brother field agents, Matt was called home to be with Our Lord and Savior. We never got a chance to see our Brother Matt at that next agency meeting. The councils he served are stunned by the sudden loss of their Field Agent and Brother Knight. He left behind his beloved wife, four children, and multiple grandchildren. We will miss him greatly at the agency for his brotherhood, leadership, and sense of humor. HE WAS A GIANT AMONG US! Pay attention to his words! The truth is undeniable that we do not know when we will be called home, and while Matt had coverage, his last thoughts were of his family and wishing he had more coverage for them knowing he might not be there for them in the future. Venerable Father McGivney, pray for us! God Bless, If my story helps you convince a Brother Knight to find the urgency to protect his family and get priorities in order then

5 Volume 3 Issue 1 Le Chevalier July 2017 p.5 Food for the Poor Project Good Day to all our volunteers! Just think: it's vacation time for most of us and we get to go to some neat, cool places. Many of our Santo Graziano volunteers leave for the summer and go to cool places up north. Our friends, the homeless, still are in the valley with temps hitting record highs this week. Our homes are cool 70's and the same with our cars. Our homeless friends have to deal with 100 plus temps this week and all summer long. I want to say thank you to all for continuing your delivery of bread and food items. We are now delivering six days a week THANKS TO ALL OF YOU. We also have a west side group and thank them. Since we are going through a hot time, I was thinking, if you can when making a delivery, drop off a case of water. You can get water at any store for less than five dollars. [optional] This would help them throughout the summer months. THANK YOU for giving of yourself freely and serving willingly. We are all a conduit for the activity and love all the people in need. THANK YOU for honoring and celebrating all humankind. Food For The Poor Project Chairperson and Committee, Santo Graziano cell:

9 Volume 3 Issue 1 Le Chevalier July 2017 p.9 A PILGRIMAGE UNLIKE ANY OTHER ceremonies with veterans from other countries, a recitation of the rosary and the Stations of the Cross, and even a military band concert. The Knights' sponsorship of the pilgrimage is the latest chapter in the story of their involvement in Lourdes, which first began nearly 100 years ago. During the First World War, the Knights were extremely active in serving American troops abroad and had an official Knights of Columbus Army Hut right in Lourdes itself. The experiences of the Knights of Columbus in France have been almost as various as are the emotions of man, a report from the period says. It continues: From May 17-23, a group of American Warrior Pilgrims, including wounded and non-wounded, are traveling to Lourdes, France, with the Warriors to Lourdes Pilgrimage to take part in the 59th International Military Pilgrimage. Sponsored by the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, (AMS) and the Knights of Columbus, the program is a time for healing, both spiritually and physically, in the sacred waters of the grotto and the surrounding atmosphere. In a letter to this year s pilgrims, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson called attention to the pilgrimage s theme Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant us peace) stating that the commitment and dedication of United States military men and women helps bring peace to the entire world and expressed his hope that this pilgrimage would be a time of peace for these peacemakers. He also recalled the significance of the pilgrimage this year, which marks the 100th anniversary of the United States entry into World War I. During WWI, the Knights of Columbus became known for their social and spiritual support to Allied servicemen of all faiths. In a letter to pilgrimage attendees, Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, (AMS) also discussed the theme of this year s pilgrimage, sharing his hope that the trip would allow pilgrims to be touched by peace and serve to strengthen the cause of peace in our time. The pilgrims have a weekend full of activities planned for them, including a series of Masses and The Knights have attended the soldiers in their time of trouble; they have helped them to make good use of their moments of leisure. They have knelt by their side on the battlefield, and, when no Priest was to be had, they have taken the dying lad s last message, encouraged him in making his act of contrition, and, when all was over, they have closed his eyes. In times of military stress they have taken food to soldiers in areas which the commissary had been unable to reach; they have made merry with them in hut and in club, joined in their pastimes, found them good reading, comforted them in body and in soul. Immediately following the end of the war, the Knights also produced a Guide to Lourdes after repeated requests from American pilgrims. There have been so many requests from the members of the American Expeditionary Forces for a Guide to Lourdes, the introduction to the booklet says, that the Knights of Columbus feel themselves called upon to present this little volume. It has always been our desire to serve our forces in every way possible. But that wasn t all. With so many American troops stationed throughout Europe, the Knights of Columbus organized the first-ever international military pilgrimage to the Marian shrine at Lourdes. Nothing that the boys have done, the article says, has given the Knights such satisfaction as has the visits of the doughboys to the shrine of Our Lady at Lourdes. Some of us had come six thousand miles, the author says, but if we had come from the uppermost parts of the earth, the joy of these

10 Volume 3 Issue 1 Le Chevalier July 2017 p.10 moments would have made the journey and the fatigue seem as nothing. The atmosphere was redolent with prayer and praise and thanksgiving. Especially thankful to the sacrifice and service of our veterans, Knights of Columbus everywhere join with the supreme knight and the archbishop in praying for a successful and impactful pilgrimage for all those currently in France, and for all who have risked their lives for our freedom. This article appeared at KofC.org The 24-Hour Knight No man is too busy to be an active Knight of Columbus. In fact, by giving just 24 hours a year to Knights of Columbus activities, a man can make an enormous difference. With just 24 hours, a man can serve his parish, help those in need in his local community, grow in his faith, and protect his family through our exclusive, top-rated insurance program. July 26: Organizational Meeting 7:00 PM August 19: Ice Cream Social What does the average Knight do with 24 hours? He will spend: 8 HOURS with his council on charitable projects for his church or community 4 HOURS enjoying a Knights of Columbus family event 4 HOURS attending council meetings to help plan future activities September 17: First Pancake Breakfast. A child eats for free when accompanied by a paying adult! 6 Hours (30 minutes each month) reading Columbia magazine and other K of C publications, including kofc.org and kofc12164.org 1 HOUR discussing his family s insurance needs with a Knights of Columbus field agent 1 HOUR attending Mass with his council. September 22, 23, 24: Tootsie Roll Drive If that is what can be done with the hours of just one day, imagine what a Knight could do with all the hours in a week! When you present the time commitment of joining the Knights of Columbus in this way, it doesn t seem very intimidating at all. Once a man sees how it can be so simple, and yet so rewarding, he ll want to join!
