1 Volume 3 Issue 10 Le Chevalier April 2018 p1 St Bernadette Council Scottsdale, AZ Inside this issue: Grand Knights Report 1 Knight of the Month 2 Family of the Month 2 Birthdays 2 Saint of the Month 3 Food for the Poor 4 Coming Ev ents 5 Calendars 7 Supreme Knight s Letter 8 Good of the Order Prayer List 9 Contacts 9 We re on the WEB: wwwkofc12164org Grand Knight s Message WGK Jerry Wood My My Dear Brothers: With apologies for my tardiness in getting this month s Le Chevalier to you, I hope everyone had a blessed and peaceful Easter Knights were involved throughout the weekend We were there for the Holy Thursday Mass as well as standing watch with our Lord in the Ramada until midnight that night On Good Friday we were there as ushers and lectors At the Vigil mass on Saturday evening, we were there again as lectors, ushers, and sacristan It pleases us to be a part of these services as well as the many others at which we serveif there is a need, you can count on Knights to be there Join us if you can This month we re trying a new social event: We re showing a movie on Wednesday evening, April 25, at 6:30 PM We hope to continue showing films of interest to our Parish Just as our first Saint of the month in Le chevalier was St Bernadette, we will show the film, Bernadette, which is the official film about Le Chevalier her life that is shown in Lourdes, France Next month, on May 23, we will show Ignatius of Loyola We hope that the Knights and the Parish will be highly supportive of these films, and we can plan to show more next year My hope is that the films will be of some religious significance or a good family comedy We want the children to be welcomed and feel at home at the films also Our Golf Outing will be this month as well, on April 28 th The Parish fundraiser is in May, and we re working on that event this year As always, my Brothers, we need help, so please pitch in wherever you can God bless you all for all you do! 3 Volume 3 Issue 10 Le Chevalier April 2018 p3 Saint of the Month Saint Ludovico of Casoria (March 11, 1814 March 30, 1885) Saint Ludovico of Casoria s Story Born in Casoria, near Naples, Arcangelo Palmentieri was a cabinet-maker before entering the Friars Minor in 1832, taking the name Ludovico After his ordination five years later, he taught chemistry, physics, and mathematics to younger members of his province for several years In 1847, he had a mystical experience which he later described as a cleansing After that, he dedicated his life to the poor and the infirm, establishing a dispensary for the poor, two schools for African children, an institute for the children of nobility, as well as an institution for orphans, the deaf, and the speechless, and other institutes for the blind, elderly, and for travelers In addition to an infirmary for friars of his province, he began charitable institutes in Naples, Florence, and Assisi He once said, Christ s love has wounded my heart This love prompted him to great acts of charity To help continue these works of mercy, in 1859 he established the Gray Brothers, a religious community composed of men who formerly belonged to the Secular Franciscan Order Three years later, he founded the Gray Sisters of St Elizabeth for the same purpose Toward the beginning of his final, nineyear illness, Ludovico wrote a spiritual testament which described faith as light in the darkness, help in sickness, blessing in tribulations, paradise in the crucifixion, and life amid death The local work for his beatification began within five months of Ludovico s death He was beatified in 1993 and canonized in 2014 Reflection Saintly people are not protected from suffering, but with God s help they learn how to develop compassion from it In the face of great suffering, we move either toward compassion or indifference Saintly men and women show us the path toward compassion St Ludovico of Casona, oro pro nobis

4 Volume 3 Issue 10 Le Chevalier April 2018 p4 Food for the Poor Project SK Santo Graziano Hello Knights Of Columbus and all volunteers, Good morning to everyone, Just a reminder: NEED TO KNOW IF YOU WILL BE ATTENDING OUR FOURTH ANNUAL LUNCH It will be held on SUNDAY, APRIL 29TH at 12:30pm at St Bernadette Church at N 60 St, four blocks south of Bell Rd We will have a speaker, Dr KEN SNYDER, who has been a volunteer for St Vincent De Paul for 22 years, written books, and has spoken to children in Paradise Valley School District We will also have FREE RAFFLE items from: Starbucks coffee, Vintage Joe's Americana, Breakfast Joynt, Firehouse Subs, High/Rye Southern Kitchen Bar, Dog Grooming, Hannah Nails and Spa, Bashas Supermarket, Rainbow Donuts, Vietnamese Restaurants, Liberty Buick Mugs, Greek Restaurants and more The LUNCH IS FREE and will include an assortment of deli meats, salad, chips, deserts, and drinks AWARDS will also be given to all our volunteers who attend It's time to meet our fellow volunteers with some good fellowship PLEASE LET US KNOW SOON FOR PLANNING THIS EVENT Hope you all had a Happy Easter Thank you for taking the time to love your neighbors in need When I practice compassion, I accept others exactly as they are: the guests, the homeless at Phoenix Becker House St Vincent De Paul We see all people as unique expressions of ourselves Thank you all for the highest good for all humankind MARK CALENDARS APRIL 29 SUNDAY 12:30PM AWARD LUNCH at St Bernadette We will have speakers, awards, lunch, raffle items, and you can meet your fellow volunteers THANKS FOR YOUR TWO HOURS EACH MONTH! 8 Volume 3 Issue 10 Le Chevalier April 2018 p8 Dear Brother Knight, including the Conscience Protection Act in their omnibus spending bill Your immediate action is necessary to protect medical professionals and all people of faith from being forced to participate in or pay for abortions You can do this easily by visiting our Action Alert Center to your elected representatives today Congress is currently considering legislation to fund the government, and it is critical that a provision called the Conscience Protection Act be included in this legislation Thank you for your attention to this important matter and for helping to protect conscience rights in the United States The Conscience Protection Act would strengthen federal law to ensure that doctors and nurses are not forced to perform abortions This critical legislation would also ensure that our churches and other religious organizations do not need to cover abortion in their insurance plans Fraternally, CarlAnderson Supreme Knight Our recent Knights of Columbus/Marist Poll found that a majority of Americans agree that no one should be forced to perform, or provide for, an abortion against their will I urge you to contact your Congressman and Senators today and express your support for St Bernadette's KofC Color Guard
