Since it s the time for folks who spend the summer in cooler climes to come home, we offered what has become our annual gift to the Parish, our Ice Cream Social in August this year. (It has been in September for the past three years.) Check out the pictures on p. 9. If you don t see yourself in one of the pictures, you missed a very good time. Our Insurance Field Agent, Wes Cacaus, also attended and manned a recruiting table. Participants come from all over. Last week we had our Installation of Officers, followed by the Awards Dinner. (Pictures: pp ) It was indeed my great honor and pleasure to hand out the many awards. Most of the recipients were present to receive their certificates, and I was very pleased about that, but I brought too many certificates home with me. I will bring them to the Council meeting on the Le Chevalier 13 th in the hope that I can distribute them to those who were not present to receive them at our dinner. We had certificates for people representing the ministries who helped us with our first Fish Fry last spring as well. I know that I say this every time, but you guys really missed a great time. I m not sure if I m just easily entertained, or if I m just feeling blessed to be in such great company when we have our events that life is great to live despite the tragedies going on in so much of the world. I might add that Knights are involved in providing aid and comfort to many of those who are suffering as well. It s good to be a Knight in so many ways! Ask an active Knight why. Vivat Jesus! Fraternally, Jerry Wood Worthy Grand Knight If anyone says, I love God, but hates his brother, he is a liar 1 John 4:20

3 Volume 3 Issue 3 Le ChevalierSeptember2017 p.3 Saint of the Month St. Alphonsus Liguori Lived: ( ) Feast Day: Saturday, August 1, 2015 Moral theology, Vatican II said, should be more thoroughly nourished by Scripture, and show the nobility of the Christian vocation of the faithful and their obligation to bring forth fruit in charity for the life of the world. Alphonsus, declared patron of moral theologians by Pius XII in 1950, would rejoice in that statement. In his day, Alphonsus fought for the liberation of moral theology from the rigidity of Jansenism. His moral theology, which went through 60 editions in the century following him, concentrated on the practical and concrete problems of pastors and confessors. If a certain legalism and minimalism crept into moral theology, it should not be attributed to this model of moderation and gentleness. At the University of Naples he received, at the age of 16, a doctorate in both canon and civil law by acclamation, but he soon gave up the practice of law for apostolic activity. He was ordained a priest and concentrated his pastoral efforts on popular (parish) missions, hearing confessions, forming Christian groups. He founded the Redemptorist congregation in It was an association of priests and brothers living a common life, dedicated to the imitation of Christ, and working mainly in popular missions for peasants in rural areas. Almost as an omen of what was to come later, he found himself deserted, after a while, by all his original companions except one lay brother. But the congregation managed to survive and was formally approved 17 years later, though its troubles were not over. Alphonsus great pastoral reforms were in the pulpit and confessional replacing the pompous oratory of the time with simplicity, and the rigorism of Jansenism with kindness. His great fame as a writer has somewhat eclipsed the fact that for 26 years he traveled up and down the Kingdom of Naples, preaching popular missions. He was made bishop (after trying to reject the honor) at 66 and at once instituted a thorough reform of his diocese. His greatest sorrow came toward the end of his life. The Redemptorists, precariously continuing after the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773, had difficulty in getting their Rule approved by the Kingdom of Naples. Alphonsus acceded to the condition that they possess no property in common, but a royal official, with the connivance of a high Redemptorist official, changed the Rule substantially. Alphonsus, old, crippled and with very bad sight, signed the document, unaware that he had been betrayed. The Redemptorists in the Papal States then put themselves under the pope, who withdrew those in Naples from the jurisdiction of Alphonsus. It was only after his death that the branches were united. At 71 he was afflicted with rheumatic pains which left incurable bending of his neck; until it was straightened a little, the pressure of his chin caused a raw wound on his chest. He suffered a final 18 months of dark night scruples, fears, temptations against every article of faith and every virtue, interspersed with intervals of light and relief, when ecstasies were frequent. Alphonsus is best known for his moral theology, but he also wrote well in the field of spiritual and dogmatic theology. His Glories of Mary is one of the great works on that subject, and his book Visits to the Blessed Sacrament went through 40 editions in his lifetime, greatly influencing the practice of this devotion in the Church. Comment: St. Alphonsus was known above all as a practical man who dealt in the concrete rather than the abstract. His life is indeed a practical model for the everyday St. Alphonsus Liguori, oro pro nobis.

4 Volume 3 Issue 3 Le ChevalierSeptember2017 p.4 Christian who has difficulty recognizing the dignity of Christian life amid the swirl of problems, pain, misunderstanding and failure. Alphonsus suffered all these things. He is a saint because he was able to maintain an intimate sense of the presence of the suffering Christ through it all.quote: Someone once remarked, after a sermon by Alphonsus, "It is a pleasure to listen to your sermons; you forget yourself and preach Jesus Christ." Ritter und Ritterschlag I n peace I shall both lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me secure. Psalm 4:9 What is a Knight and what is an accolade? Knights emerged from the mounted followers of the Germanic military leaders, especially among the Carolingian and the Saxon emperors This Warriorship consisted of unfree service from people who were committed to their Lords, Princes, or Counts. You had to go to war if the King of these royal nobles requested military assistance. This group evolved into the "profession" of the Knight. In the 12th and 13th centuries, knighthood became a birth status. Knights could only be descended from a Knight. The many virtuous vows of the Knight s oath today Sir Knight Michael Dill receives the "Schwertleite." give the impression that the Knight s life had been shaped mainly by polite, courtly behavior and Christian ideals. The reality looked like the many seals tell us but often it was completely different. The life of a Knight was rich with deprivation and determined by almost daily fighting. The Knight was not only a warrior who defended his property and moved for his Royal master in the war, but he was also a rural landowner, who headed the Agriculture of its farmers. Naturally he could not neglect these obligations. He needed the income from agriculture and animal husbandry in order to be able to afford the expensive war equipment and the often long journeys. A full suit of armor cost about 45 cows with steed, shield and lance. This corresponded to the stock of an entire Frankish village. Good manners and mastery of courtly etiquette were considered important. Even health and beauty were important. But no Knight could come without the virtue of service of courtly love, the love of a noble Lady. He was allowed to worship her only from afar. The wooed was not allowed to return this love. The Knight s virtues of the feudal system stand at the beginning of the scale: obedience to his employer, courage, and loyalty. In addition, there are the Christian virtues required by the Church: Defense of the weak, the protection of defenseless, the mercy to poor, humility before God, the defense of the faith, and peace. It was new, that the church allowed the nobles and Knights to handle the weapons in order to uphold these values. All of these knightly virtues and requirements were carried by minstrels and poets from court to court and Castle to Castle. The most famous Knights were Walther von der Vogelweide and Wolfram von Eschenbach. In German there are two words that name the act of attaining knighthood: Ritterschlag and Schwertleite. They are both translated into English as the knightly accolade. We ve seen enough movies about knights and ladies to be familiar with the term dubbing the knight. This process involves touching the shoulder of the noble squire with the tip of a sword. All 3 rd and 4 th degree Knights of Columbus have received this Schwertleite. The Ritterschlag is the older term. It has been known since the 11th century. The German word itself provides its translation: Ritter = Knight; Schlag = punch. So, those noble squires were appointed by a punch to the face, chest, or shoulder to attain knighthood. If you ve seen the film, Kingdom of Heaven, you saw actor Liam Neeson deliver such a punch to Orlando Bloom, who plays his son, when he made him a knight. His son performs the same act later in the film when he confers knighthood onto every man in his army who defends Jerusalem from Saladin and the Muslims. A famous conferring of knighthood was at Whitsun in 1184, when at the Farm Festival at Mainz the two sons of Emperor Friederich Barbarossa received the knightly accolade. There are different descriptions of the knightly accolade. On the eve of the big day, the Squire took a ritual bath to wash himself of his sins. In the evening he came into the Church arrayed with

5 Volume 3 Issue 3 Le ChevalierSeptember2017 p.5 only a cowl. He laid down his armor, sword and his Family Coat of Arms on the altar. The candidate spent the night praying and fasting in his arms. The candidate was wrapped in fine clothes after the morning mass. A red robe was supposed to remind him of his duty, if necessary to shed his blood for the Christian faith. Black stockings should remind him of death. Then his sword was tied onto a weapons belt for him. Gottfried of Strasbourg, who lived around 1200, described very vividly in Tristan and Isolde the obligations and the virtues of a Knight: "Now your sword is blessed, now you have become Knights, note also your knightly honor, your position, your person, your birth, your nobility. Be humble without guile, well educated, to the poor be kind, to the powerful be high minded, maintain your outer appearance well, honor and love women, be generous and loyal, cheerful. Then start again from the beginning" The Ritterschlag is supposed to have come into practice in During the reign of Karl IV the Ritterschlag replaced the Schwertleite, which involved being stuck in the shoulder with the tip of the sword. There were regional differences in these ceremonies, but many ended with music, dance, and a banquet. Being a Knight has always required some sacrifice, but it has always been an honor to serve as one. May the Knights of Columbus long serve and do honor to God, Church, Family, and Community. The majority of this article has been translated from a German language article in the Ss. Peter and Paul Newsletter. I have added some of my own portions to the article, which was written by Gerhard Ficker, Stellvertreter Großprior, a position in the Confraternity of Knights of Ss. Peter & Paul, which resembles a Deputy Grand Knight. I am proud to continue our association with that Order in Germany. Jerry Wood, WGK

Pictured on the previous page are the awardees who were able to attend our dinner. We re all proud of all the pictured Knights and their families, and we re thankful for their participation in our activities as well as in the various ministries of our Parish. We re proud of all our Knights, and we re all proud to be Knights of Columbus. The past Fraternal Year had a few events, which our council had never before attempted: We had a Lenten Fish Fry, which enjoyed good success. There were other ministries who contributed to that effort: St. Vincent de Paul Society, Culture of Life, Parish Office, Men s and Women s bible Study Groups, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts. They provided Figure 2: SK Vincenzo and Susan Cefalu, family of the Month in December and Family of the Year, Photo: Jerry Wood desserts and salads as well as helping with setup, takedown, and acting as servers. Though we consider it a Knights of Columbus event, we received invaluable assistance from all the other ministries. Working together = success! Our traditional Italian Dinner had an extra-added attraction: Cash Prize Bingo. That was another first for our Council, performed with the aid of the St. Joan of Arc Knights of Columbus. We have also added a beautiful statue dedicated to the unborn, which is located in our new prayer garden, Mother Mary s Garden, located near the Adoration Chapel. Council has been busy; I hope you were a part of those efforts; if not, join us this year because we ll be doing it all again!
