We have an incredible project ahead of us in March and April: Lenten Fish Fries on every Friday of Lent. The good news is that we had a dress rehearsal last week, and the fish was delicious! The trick now is to entice the folks to come. We have a great product, I think, and many of our brothers have worked very hard to make this an event worth attending. I hope all council members will support this event. Volunteer to work a Friday in Lent, or come to a couple of fish dinners. It will be worth the effort. When I was a freshman In college, I had occasion to live a semester in the home of the parents of my future older son s godfather. They had a book about the Shroud of Turin in the bookcase in my room, and I read it. It was written by a French medical doctor, who described what had happened to our Lord during the crucifixion. If you haven t read that book, you Le Chevalier should. I was mesmerized by that book, and I read it over and over. Nearly every night I read from it. There has been a great deal of research conducted on the Shroud since then. It has been carbon dated and examined by an untold number of experts. There is a more recent book by researcher Ian Wilson called simply The Shroud. It contains much newer information derived from more recent research. I have found a picture of our Lord s image, which was taken from the imprint on the Shroud, and it is beautiful. I m going to include it here so that all of you can see it. It s a powerful experience to look upon it. As we approach Lent, we can meditate on the image. Seeing it revives the incredibly stirring that I felt way back in I hope this picture will be as moving and inspiring for you as it is for me. Vivat Jesus! Fraternally, Jerry Wood Worthy Grand Knight

3 Volume 2 Issue 9 Le Chevalier March 2017 p.3 Saint of the Month Blessed Guillaume Chaminade Chaminade was born in 1761 in Périgueux to Catherine Bethon and Blaise Chaminade, in the former province of Périgord, now the Department of Dordogne. [2] He was the 14th child of deeply religious parents. Three of his brothers became priests. Feeling called to serve in this way as well, he entered a minor seminary in Mussidan at the age of ten. He was ordained a priest in 1785 for the local diocese. [3] The Revolutionary era In 1790, after the start of the French Revolution, Chaminade moved to Bordeaux. There he became an enemy of the state by defying the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, which would have required him to take an oath affirming the Revolution's secular values and disclaiming the authority of the Roman Catholic Church. He secretly continued to work as a priest, risking a possible death penalty. One of his allies in this work was the Venerable Marie-Thérèse Charlotte de Lamourous ( ), whom he later assisted in founding Bordeaux's Miséricorde (House of Mercy) for "fallen women". [3] In 1795, when the national government sought to work with the non-juring clergy, Chaminade accepted responsibility for supervising the reconciliation of the clergy of Bordeaux who had taken the Constitutional Oath but wanted to make peace with the Catholic Church; about fifty such priests completed their reconciliation with his help. After the Coup of 18 Fructidor by the French Directory in 1797, he fled the country and found refuge in Zaragoza, Spain, for three years. [3] While living there, he would regularly visit the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar out of his strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. As a result of his prayer he developed a vision for restoring the Catholic faith to France. To this end, he decided to build an organization of both lay and religious Order members, taking her as the model of a perfect disciple of Jesus. [3] Founder When he returned to Bordeaux in November 1800, he reestablished the Marian Sodality, which he hoped would promote the desecularization of France by offering "the spectacle of a people of saints". He saw the development of the young lay movement as the prime focus of his mission. In this he was opposed by the traditionalist forces in the Church, both clergy and lay, who saw the re-creation of the privileges and institutions of the pre- Revolutionary Church as the true goal of their restoration of the faith in France. In 1824 Chaminade published a reply to that line of thinking in which he stated, "The levers that move the moral world somehow need a new fulcrum." [4] The sodality spread to other cities, and the Vatican recognized his efforts by appointing him Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Bazas and later, in 1801, naming him an "Apostolic Missionary" to the region, confirming their trust in him. [3] Some sodalitists wanted to make a more complete commitment to the Church, so Chaminade, along with the Venerable Adèle de Batz de Trenquelléon ( ), founded the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate in Agen in A year later, he founded the Society of Mary at Bordeaux. Both religious institutes devoted themselves to teaching. Chaminade sought to establish a network of schools to train Catholic teachers, but this effort was checked by the 1830 Revolution. However, both of Chaminade's religious institutes continued to grow: the Daughters of Mary founded schools in south-western France to educate rural women and the Society of Mary expanded in France and spread to Switzerland (1839) and the United States of America (1849). Death Bl.Guillaume Chaminade, ora pro nobis. The last ten years of Chaminade's life were filled with problems of health, finances and obstacles to his vision in the administration of the Society. He was replaced in January 1846 as Superior General by a General Chapter, which he considered illegitimate, called by members of the General Council of the Society, with the approval of the Holy See. Partially paralyzed, he thereafter was left in virtual isolation by the government of the Society. [5] Chaminade died in Bordeaux in 1850, surrounded by members of the Society he had founded, where his tomb is A statue of Chaminade adorns the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at the University of Dayton.

This is often a selling point to a potential member who is on the fence. Many members become Knights simply to be able to buy coverage to protect their family. Soon after, they realize the good our charitable works do for their community, and they are proud to be members. As your professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent, I look forward to helping us grow in fraternity in any way that I can. Member of KofC since 2005 God Bless, Protecting Catholic families since 1882 Life Insurance Long-Term Care Retirement Annuities Disability We are just past the midpoint of our Fraternal Year, in reviewing our growth and achievements; we still have work to do to achieve Star Council. Some councils are off to a great start while others have some catching up to do. The good news is there is still time! Let's get together soon for Membership Drives, Fraternal Benefits Nights, or whatever ideas you have to meet our council goals. I'm here to help your councils succeed and to protect all that Venerable Fr. McGivney envisioned for our great Order. Keep up the good work! Ask Eligible Men to Join Today, I want to address the growth of the Order. Membership growth is the fuel that keeps this great fraternal engine running. All of our charitable works at the council, state, national and international level are thanks to our hard-working members. And more members equals more charity. We know that the membership blitz is a tried and true way for councils to get more men to join. We see these pushes often in March, in celebration of Founder s Day, and again in October. These drives are successful because brother Knights have increased visibility speaking or presenting during and after Masses and at special events. We must remember that we have a duty to ask each and every Catholic gentleman to join our ranks for the good of the Church, the community and the Order. During the rest of the year, we often forget to ask men to join and to bring their families into the Knights of Columbus family. You probably know an eligible Catholic man you could ask today. What if the only reason he hasn t joined is because no one has asked him yet? Food for the Poor Project Good week to all our volunteers, We thank you all for taking your turn each month to help the poor in our community. I know there are days when our mind doesn't want to do anything but relax and stay home. We tell SK Santo Graziano ourselves it's only once or twice a month. Our mentor should be Saint Theresa of Calcutta: Look at what she did every day for the poor of the world. When St Mother Teresa accepted the Nobel Peace Prize, she said would use the money to make homes for many people who had no home because I believe that love begins at home, and if we can create a home for the poor, I think that more and more love will spread. Thank you, all volunteers, for spreading the love to the poor in Phoenix. If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one. St. Mother Teresa reminders us that mission field is vast because there is more than material poverty. The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread. THINK ABOUT YOUR SMALL PART in this mission that we serve; then think about what she has done, and I am certain that you will conclude that our part is small in the scope of what she has done. On Sunday April 30th, plan to attend the annual award luncheon. There will be raffle prizes and good fellowship with your fellow volunteers. It will be held at Paradise Bakery in the conference room at Pima Rd., 101/Raintree location. More information will come later. Please RSVP when you know you re able to come. We say Thanks to all our businesses that donate to the program. We have two new volunteers to our program: Jim and Jane Kearns. Thanks for joining our team! 5 Volume 2 Issue 9 Le Chevalier March 2017 p.5 Unity None of us is as good as all of us. Members of the Knights of Columbus all know that together we can accomplish far more than any of us could individually. So we stick together we support one another. That doesn t mean that we always agree or that there is never a difference of opinion. It does mean that as a Knight of Columbus you can count on the support and encouragement of your brother Knights as you work to make life better in your parish and community. Sometimes we Knights need a reminder about our four principles; please take note of our Principle of Unity. Don t miss Deacon Harold! He is truly worthy of his nickname: He is DYNAMIC! Leader s Prayer Dear Lord, give us a spirit of self-sacrifice so that we may offer everything for Your cause, including our time and our abilities. Instill in us courage in our initiatives, good judgment in our choice of the right means and that determination which in spite of failures assures victory. Figure 2: Fr. Help us maintain at a high level a meaningful supernatural and mutual charity among ourselves, so that each one will seek by preference the most humble tasks and will rejoice at the good performed by others, so that our spirits, united in a common purpose, will have one single spirit: Yours, Jesus. And may this spirit let us see Your warm accents in all our words, and in our lives something superior to the world, something that proclaims Your Living Presence among us. We make our prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen

9 Volume 2 Issue 9 Le Chevalier March 2017 p.9 Iraqi Christians erect large cross in area liberated from ISIS, Mosul, Iraq, Feb 23, 2017 / 04:00 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- After years of darkness, hope has returned to Telekuf-Tesqopa. Located just 17 miles from Mosul, the village is rebuilding after being liberated from ISIS. As a visible sign of the rebuilding, a giant cross was erected on a hill, marking the victory of the Christian faith against the darkness of the jihadists. On Feb. 18, the Chaldean Catholic Patriarch of Baghdad, Louis Sako, visited the village, where he blessed the large cross and participated in the celebration of the first Mass after two and a half years in Saint George Church. According to the website of the Patriarchate of Babylon, the authorities and officials of the region were present at the celebration. In his homily, Patriarch Sako said that this event is the first spark of light shining in all the cities of the Nineveh Plain since the darkness of ISIS, which lasted almost two and a half years. This is our land and this is our home, he told the faithful. He also said that now is the time to regain hope and for the people to return to their towns to begin a new stage of life. The patriarch said that Christians will thus demonstrate to the world that the forces of darkness, which wreaked havoc and ravaged their land, are ephemeral and that the Church of Christ, although it suffers, is built upon rock. When the Mass was over, everyone went out to a hill located on the outskirts of the city. There Patriarch Sako blessed the huge cross which was raised amid fireworks and with cries of Victory! Victory! Victory! For those who chose the faith and those who return! The Catholic Patriarch said that this cross will announce to the world that this is our land, we were born here and we will die here. Our ancestors were buried in this pure land and we are going to remain to preserve them with all our might and for future generations. It is a sincere and great call to return and rebuild. We are joined to our land, to our future on the land of our ancestors. Here we can be proud of our history and here we can obtain the granting of all our rights, Patriarch Sako said. Before the celebration of the Mass, a delegation came to Telekuf-Tesqopa to assess the state of damage and to thus ask for the support of international organizations for reconstruction. Saint George Church was cleaned by volunteers from the French aid organization SOS Chrétiens d Orient. (SOS Christians of the East). The placement of crosses has become a recurring gesture since the Iraqi Army began the offensive to recover the city of Mosul, the ISIS stronghold in Iraq. In every village liberated on the Plain of Nineveh, Christians have made wooden crosses and have placed them on the roofs of churches and homes. Muslims have also participated in these events. Last week, a group of Muslims youths joined those cleaning a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary located in east Mosul, liberated by the Iraqi Army. This action is part of a campaign that seeks to remember the religious coexistence that was present in the city before the jihadists occupied it in This article appeared at CatholicVote.org.
