1 THE COUNCIL CHRONICLE ST. ANASTASIA COUNCIL #15429 Volume 2, Issue 9 March 2016 Coffee and Donuts: 3/6 Monthly Meeting: 3/8 7:00pm Parish Breakfast: 3/16 Grand Knight s Report Worthy Brothers, This is a difficult report to write. Over the past few months, this report has covered fraternity, unity and charity, three of the four pillars of the Knights of Columbus. The fourth pillar is patriotism, the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus. We will leave that for a more appropriate time to expound on. As I mentioned this report is difficult because it concerns that triad of pillars so essential to our Inside this issue 3 Deputy Grand Knight s Report 4 St. Patrick 5 Upcoming events 9 March Month of St. Joseph Council and the community that we serve. Let me start by saying that the officers of this council work hard, very hard to bring those values into our council and into our parish. Time and effort is expended on setting an example for others to follow and I am proud of each of our officers for stepping up when the going gets tough. We, our council, are the standard- bearer for Catholic Lay Leadership in our community. We have the potential, the resources and the capability to do great works for our parish and the community it serves. What we are lacking is commitment from our brothers. Now before you go off angry, hear me out. As I said this is a difficult report to write. We have 124 members in our Council. One hundred and twenty four Catholic men coming from all walks of life and are the Lay Leaders for the community. Of those 124, on average 22 brothers actually attend a meeting to find out what is going on and what the Council is planning. Those 22 support most of the events and programs that the Council provides. They are not the same 22 all the time but a number of them are there for every event, every program, every time Continued on next page - see Grand Knight

Let me know if there is something you wish publicized. You can reach me by at or by Grand Knight, cont. the Council is asked to help. They are the 20%. They are the men who have taken an interest in their Council and worked hard to make it the best Council on the Treasure Coast. But what about the other 80%? Here is where it gets a bit disturbing. Every one of the 124 members of our Council took their first degree. During that degree, you were reminded to keep your financial obligations to the Council current as well as being reminded that by your words, deeds and actions would you show your ability to take the higher degrees of the Order. Now some 44 members (35% of our membership) have fallen behind in their financial obligation to the Council. The Council has paid the necessary per capita tax to both the Supreme Council and the Florida State Council because it is important that these men remain a part of the Knights of Columbus. But that cannot continue. We cannot continue to pay for members who do not meet their obligations to the council. A bit more disturbing, though, is the absence of commitment on the part of many of our members. A number of members, when contacted, said that they only wanted to do grunt type work for the Council. However, when approached with the need for help at an event or function they are nowhere in sight. We have enough parish breakfasts, Lenten dinners, coffee and doughnuts, parish events (Christ the King, Immaculate Conception, parish receptions etc.) and blood drives that require help in setting up and cleaning up that there is plenty of opportunity for everyone to help. If you cannot help at one of these at least then come and support the function. It is very discouraging to see brother Knights and their families heading off to breakfast at Denny s, IHOP, or Waffle House when we have an excellent parish breakfast right on site. Or to note that the Lenten Dinners we offer the parish is not attended by our own brothers and their families. As part of the Council, we need to support our functions, and by doing so we not only increase our commitment, we increase our fraternity, unity and charity. There is so much that this council is capable of doing, but cannot because of the lack of commitment. We, as a Council need to change that. Being an active member of the Council is a win win for all. The average age in St. Anastasia Council is 56. St. Anastasia Council has eight Honorary Life members, two are priests the other six have more than 25 years in as a Knight and are over 65. Our most populous age group is the sixty- six members that are 31 to 59. Sixteen members are in the age grouping; eleven are and twenty are 75+. We are blessed with 11 members who are 30 or under. The future of our Council rests in those younger brothers. We need to make sure it is here for them. Vivat Jesus! SK Bob Cuddy, GK 2
3 Service Hours need to be reported Steve Ring needs to get an accurate account of the service hours that all Knights have been putting in for all the activities in and out of the council that goes toward church and community hours. Please either call him (561) or see him at the next meeting to fill out the form. Steve will submit the total hours from our Council to Supreme. On Saturday, March 19th, is the "Knight At the Races". We normally have between 25 and 30 volunteers to make the event run well. Right now, we have about 15 who have committed. Please let Paul Pecor or myself know that you will be there to help. We are also looking to increase our attendance. That is the reason we moved the Race up to March. I want to bring in the snowbirds. But we also need our membership to support us by attending and bringing some friends. We need kitchen help. Someone who can cook hamburgers and hot dogs. The chronicle may come out after this meeting on Wednesday, March 2nd. I am having a meeting with the Activity Directors and anyone else who would like to attend at my house at 7:00pm. The purpose of the meeting is to propose activities or events for next years calendar. It must be in by May. Suggestions for events, eliminating things in this year s calendar and keeping things in this years calendar. Anything else you want to discuss that you feel is hurting our council or that can help our Council be better and will possibly get more people involved. If Check out our new website! you cannot be at the meeting and would like to contribute your thoughts, please call me or e- mail me. Everything that is discussed at the meeting will be brought to the membership for their approval before it goes into the calendar. This is your Council. Let's do things that you want to do. 4 St. Patrick March 17 th EMBLEMS OF THE ORDER AND COUNCIL JEWELS St. Patrick of Ireland is one of the world's most popular saints. He was born in Roman Britain and when he was fourteen or so, he was captured by Irish pirates during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. At the time, Ireland was a land of Druids and pagans but Patrick turned to God and wrote his memoir, The Confession. In The Confession, he wrote: "The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith, and my soul was rosed, so that, in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same. I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn. I felt no hurt from the snow or ice or rain." Patrick's captivity lasted until he was twenty, when he escaped after having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Britain and was reunited with his family. A few years after returning home, Patrick saw a vision he described in his memoir: "I saw a man coming, as it were from Ireland. His name was Victoricus, and he carried many letters, and he gave me one of them. I read the heading: 'The Voice of the Irish.' As I began the letter, I imagined in that moment that I heard the voice of those So far, in this series we have looked at the Emblems of the Order and the Fourth Degree, and the jewels for the Grand Knight, Deputy Grand Knight, Chaplain, Chancellor, Financial Secretary and Treasurer. This month we look at the jewels for the Lecturer and the Advocate. The Lecturer Jewel encompasses the Lyre and Scroll. These are traditionally symbolic of music and literature and the arts. Hence the lecturer is in charge of entertainment for the Council and brings interesting and informative items to our meetings. The Advocate jewel is the Scroll (legal literature and law) with sword (the power to defend and enforce the law). The Advocate is the parliamentarian of the Council and is responsible for seeing that the meetings are conducted in accordance with the guidelines from Supreme and within the bounds of Roberts Rules of Order. 5 St. Patrick, cont. very people who were near the wood of Foclut, which is beside the western sea- and they cried out, as with one voice: 'We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us.'" The vision prompted his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained by St. Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre, whom he had studied under for years, and was later ordained a bishop and sent to take the Gospel to Ireland. Patrick arrived in Slane, Ireland on March 25, 433. There are several legends about what happened next, with the most prominent claiming he met the chieftan of one of the druid tribes, who tried to kill him. After an intervention from God, Patrick was able to convert the chieftain and preach the Gospel throughout Ireland. There, he converted many people - eventually thousands - and he began building churches across the country. He often used shamrocks to explain the Holy Trinity and entire kingdoms were eventually converted to Christianity after hearing Patrick's message. Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland for 40 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in Confessions. After years of living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering he died March 17, 461. 7 LENTEN FISH DINNERS AT THREE- WEEK MARK The Lenten Fish Dinners have been successful in bringing parishioners and others into the parish center for a terrific Lenten Friday meal. With a new chief chef and help from the council, the dinners are presented and received well. Three weeks have gone by with another three to go. If you have not been to one of our dinners, next Friday is the time to come down and enjoy a meal with friends and family. BLOOD DRIVE THIS COMING SUNDAY MARCH 6 Our first blood drive of 2016 happens this coming Sunday, March 6 from 8 AM to 1 PM. Be sure to stop by and donate a pint of blood. Every pint of blood donated helps three other people survive. It is a great way to show some charity and at the same time pick up a free ticket to our next parish breakfast. COFFEE AND DOUGHNUTS SUNDAY MARCH 6 The First Sunday of the month brings coffee and doughnuts to the parish. This month it is in conjunction with the Blood Drive. Stop by, donate blood, have a cup of java and a doughnut, and catch up with some friends. It is a terrific expression of charity to donate blood. PARISH BREAKFAST SUNDAY MARCH 13 The parish breakfast for March is being held on Sunday March 13. At that breakfast there will be a display of the Essay Contest winners and the Poster Contest winners. The winners have been selected and we are in the process of notifying them. Come on in and see the posters and essays and enjoy a breakfast of eggs, sausage, pancakes or French toast. See you Sunday, March 13. 7
8 Degree Teams Brother Tom Assaly is our Degree Team Captain. The First Degree Team is in place, well trained and has performed a number of 1st Degrees over the past year. It has been called upon regularly to bring new members into the Knights of Columbus. We are now in the process of building a 2 nd degree team. The scripts are in house and a number of brothers have expressed interest in becoming members of the 2nd Degree team. Anyone who is interested should contact Brother Thomas Assaly for additional information. Brother Thom can use additional team members for both teams so that there are backups for each part. Degree work is informative, fun filled, interesting and develops great fraternity. Besides what better way to help new members than by giving them their degrees? 9 March Insurance Matters Month of St. Joseph The month of March is dedicated to St. Joseph. We don't know much about him except what is mentioned in the Gospels. Joseph was the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the foster- father of Jesus. Holy Scripture proclaims him as a "just man," and the Church has turned to Joseph for his patronage and protection. The Church encourages us to be devoted to Joseph because he was a model in the heroic practice of all the virtues. The example of virtuous living that he gave in the exact fulfillment of the duties of his state of life is worthy of our reflection. Read the gospel and you will see his faith, hope and charity practiced under trying circumstances. He was prudent in caring for his wife and the child; he showed great leadership in protecting them and assisting them. He was religious in every sense, with that delicacy and sincerity of conscience that is proper to the saints of God. He was just in his dealings with God and man. He was conspicuous for his fortitude and courage. He was truly outstanding in the practice of virginal chastity. More: he protected and defended Mary's virtue in the time of courtship and all during their life together. Time and again the Church has made it clear that Joseph is not a saint for only a certain number of souls, but that he can help all men.
