When we greet in peace the person near us at Mass, we share the touch of a handshake or embrace, sincere eye contact, and friendly words. The scriptures speak of a similar peace. The first reading from Isaiah describes the peace of the holy city, Jerusalem, a place of prosperity and comfort where the LORD s power shall be known to his servants (Isaiah 66:14c). The Christian understanding of peace changes slightly. Paul writes of the peace and mercy on all who are created anew. Jesus describes a feeling of peace that will rest on those who accept his disciples and their message. Peace is both an absence of strife and a personal blessing. May we always and sincerely bring peace to our own lives as we share it with others. PEACE & JUSTICE MINISTRY Update on Signature Gathering to Place the Justice That Works Acts of 2016 on the Fall Ballot - In the spirit of Pope Francis Year of Mercy, parishioners from Catholic parishes came together in March and April of 2016 to promote a proposition to end the death penalty in California. We wish to thank everyone who gave of their time and talent to gather signatures after Masses to place the Justice That Works Act of 2016 on the fall ballot. We have been successful! A total of 601,000 signatures have been submitted to the Secretary of State - we only needed 360,880 valid signatures to qualify. We gathered 400 signatures at St. Angela Merici, 300 at St. Juliana Falconieri, 100 at Holy Spirit, 645 at St. Martin de Porres, 1,521 at Christ Cathedral, and 560 at St. Edward the Confessor!
