2 Sunday s Reflection Manifesting The Spirit: The Christmas season closes this Sunday with the Baptism of the Lord. This feast is a sister to last week s feast of the Epiphany. Each of them celebrates an epiphany, or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in Jesus first in his birth, and now at his baptism. The Divine Spirit is manifested in all of the scriptures for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the Spirit of God creating and renewing the earth, while the reading from Isaiah describes God restoring Israel. In Luke s account of the baptism of the Lord the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus. And the letter to Titus reminds us that the Holy Spirit was richly poured out on us also, through the bath of rebirth (Titus 3:5, 6). 6 MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY 1. Practice three magic words in a family s life: I m sorry (along with thank you and may I ) 2. Give a family member your time and attention; listen to their feelings, hopes and dreams 3. Send a get well or Mass card when someone you know is ill 4. Attend a funeral mass or viewing 5. Encourage your children to join you in visiting an elderly neighbor or a homebound friend 6. Encourage your children to join you to participate in Holy Spirit Charitable Projects: His Hands, Thomas Walkathon, SHIP, Respect Life 7. Clean out closets and have a Yard Sale and give the proceeds to disaster relief services. 8. Support clean water and digging of wells in 3rd world countries 9. Support a local homeless shelter with money, items or a gift of your time 10.Try to do together as a family, one work of mercy SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY 1. Teach your child to start each day with Morning Offering Prayer 2. Make a pilgrimage to a Holy Door in the diocese 3. Go to confession as a family. 4. Learn together about the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. 5. Pray together the Year of Mercy Prayer 6. Keep an open door in your heart to those who have hurt you. 7. Pray with someone who is sad, lonely or sick at heart 8. Reflect as a family the Questions of the Week, provided in the weekly bulletin 9. Point out spiritual maturity as putting others ahead of yourself of Mercy DECEMBER 8, NOVEMBER 20, Spend time in prayer for a relationship that needs forgiveness and healing, asking the Holy Spirit for insight on how best to reconcile with that person.
