2 SUNDAY S REFLECTION: Strengthened by The Bread of Life Today we resume the Bread of Life discourse from John s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life a marvelous promise, but this reward is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth Our Lady Of Grace Pastoral Center Mary, Full of Grace, intercede for us during this time. SECOND COLLECTION There is a second collection this weekend after all the Masses for the Viet Toc Foundation. The Mission Office of our Diocese has selected Fr. Vang Tran from the Viet Toc Foundation as our Parish Summer Missionary Appeal. Thank you for your generosity! WOMEN S SILENT RETREAT It is once again Holy Spirit Church s Women s Silent retreat time; come and join us with Rev. Jim Costigan, CPM Retreat Master October 12-14, at Sacred Heart Retreat House in Alhambra. During this weekend, you will have opportunities to attend Mass, Adoration, and conferences given by Father Jim Costigan, CPM. You will also have the opportunity to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation and spend quiet moments in personal prayer and reflection in the Chapel or in the beauty of the outdoor gardens. This retreat begins at 5:00pm on Friday and will conclude after Mass on Sunday. There are five meals included with this retreat beginning with dinner on Friday and concluding with breakfast on Sunday. Rooms do go fast on a first come first serve basis. We will prep for our September summary of main propositions on the upcoming November ballot. We will update SHIP and discuss our parish commitment to help SHIP in the fall. All are invited! RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE: Novena for our Nation There is a great need for us to come back to Christ and once again be "One Nation Under God". A 54 day Rosary Novena for our nation, under Fr. Richard Heilman, President of the Holy League, will start on August 15 and will end on October 7. Please make this commitment for the conversion and healing of our country! SIMON AND JUDE SUPPORT PROGRAM FOR DIVORCE & SEPARATION Saints Simon and Jude Catholic Church is hosting a 13-week program to support our brothers and sisters going through the emotional pain of divorce and separation. These meetings will be held on Monday evenings, September 10 through December 17, from 7:00-8:30pm in the multi-purpose room. These sessions address key challenges and unique family dynamics that occur as a result of this unexpected journey. They also offer a safe environment to share concerns and reconnect with a new understanding and new hope.
