1 BRIDGING FAITH & LEARNING SERVICE OF WORSHIP Fifth Sunday after Pentecost Sunday, June 24, 2018, 11:00 a.m. Detail, Paradise, Jan Bruegel the Younger, 1620 In this morning's readings from Deuteronomy, Moses teaches Israel the essence of the Law: to fear, walk after, love, and serve the Lord with all their heart and soul, and to keep every commandment of God. Moses reaffirms Israel as the covenantally-chosen people of the one true God, the God who executes justice for the orphan, widow, and stranger. The Lord promises abundant blessing upon the promised land if Israel remains faithful and is not seduced by other gods. Moses commands these words to be taught to the children of every generation, as they were to Jesus, who many centuries later would reaffirm the essence of the Law that he alone, as the Son of God, would fulfill in its entirety.

Dr. Lapsley is associate professor of Old Testament, and director of The Center for Theology, Women, and Gender at Princeton Theological Seminary. She earned her MA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, her MDiv from Princeton Seminary, and her PhD from Emory University. Dr. Lapsley is interested in literary theory, ethics (especially creation ethics), theological anthropology, and gender theory, as tools for reading the Old Testament theologically. She is the co-author of Bible and Ethics in the Christian Life (Fortress Press, 2018). Lapsley is an ordained Presbyterian elder and teaches and preaches in congregations. SUMMER SCRIPTURE LESSONS As Christians who worship in a liturgical tradition, we follow the Revised Common Lectionary for our scripture texts throughout the year. This three-year cycle of scriptures follows the Christian calendar, and passages are selected to match the season of the Church year and the themes present therein. This summer during Ordinary Time, we will be following a different selection of texts. Together, we will read the book of Deuteronomy as our primary scripture lessons in our Sunday services, and our preachers will be preaching from Deuteronomy throughout the summer. Reading and listening together will allow our community to learn from scripture passages that we do not regularly encounter through the lectionary in our worship services and will open us to receive from a broader range of the scriptural canon; this approach is called lectio continua. We hope you will join us through the summer as we read, study, and learn from the book of Deuteronomy. LECTIO CONTINUA LESSONS We invite you to read Deuteronomy with us outside of our Sunday services. For the month of June, we invite you to read the passages on the following schedule before the date listed: July 1 (11:31 14:21), July 8 (14:22 17:20), July 15 (18:1 19:21). SUMMER MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS This summer the Chapel has repairs and maintenance scheduled on windows, the Flentrop organ, and our sound system. The various projects begin in June and run through August. Thank you for accommodating the inconveniences of making the repairs and improvements. BACK PEW COLLECTION Urban Ministries of Durham, which provides food, shelter, clothing, and hope to homeless neighbors, welcomes donations of shelfstable food for their food pantry, toilet paper, and new underwear of all sizes. LEMONADE IN THE LOUNGE TODAY Please stay after worship for a time of fellowship and cool refreshment in the Chapel lounge, located in the lower level of the building. 7 ENGAGE (Continued) PREACHING AND PROTEST This summer Chapel Dean Luke Powery is leading a group of students in exploring how preaching in Duke Chapel during the 1960s intersected with the public protest and social change of that era. The students will report on their research this Wednesday, June 27, at 1:15 p.m. at Smith Warehouse Bay 4, as part of the Franklin Humanities Story+ program. SATURDAY SERVICE PROJECT Volunteers are needed on Saturday, June 30, from 9:00 a.m. to 12-noon to sort donated clothing and prepare it for distribution at Urban Ministries of Durham. Volunteers should meet in the Urban Ministries parking lot, 410 Liberty Street, Durham shortly before 9:00 a.m. Please contact Cricket Scovil at scovilj@aol.com to let her know if you can help. CHORAL SUMMER WORKSHOP The Chapel s associate conductor of Chapel Music, Dr. Philip Cave, will lead an early music choral workshop July 4 through 8 at the Chapel. The workshop will explore choral vespers music from the medieval, renaissance, and Baroque periods. On Sunday, July 8, the workshop ensemble will sing in Duke Chapel's 11:00 a.m. worship service. GODLY PLAY TRAINING Godly Play is a curriculum for children s spiritual formation and Christian education. Based on Montessori methods, Godly Play provides a sacred space for discovery learning and making connections with the Biblical story.
