Service of Worship Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost October 8, 2017 Eleven o clock in the morning Bridging Faith and Learning Founders and Inauguration Sunday on the Occasion of the Inauguration of Vincent E. Price as Tenth President of Duke University

The congregation is invited to reflect silently during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. The Chapel welcomes families with children. If at any time during the service your child needs a place for active play, please know there is a nursery in the Chapel basement. Gathering Carillon Opening Voluntary Rhapsody in D-flat major, Op. 17, No. 1 Herbert Howells ( ) Choral Inroit Cry Out and Shout Knut Nystedt ( ) Cry out and shout, ye people of God! The Lord is strength and song! Therefore with joy shall ye draw water from the wells of salvation. Greeting and Announcements adap. Isaiah 12 Joining in the procession today are representatives from Religious Life groups and community organizations with whom the Chapel is partnered. *Processional Hymn 559 (Found in the hymnals located in the pew racks.) Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation westminster abbey *Prayer of Confession and Words of Assurance (In unison) Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen. The minister speaks words of assurance.

*Peace (All exchange signs and words of God s peace.) Founders Litany (Please see page seven.) Proclamation Prayer for Illumination (in unison) Gracious God, you call us to fullness of life: deliver us from unbelief and send your Spirit now to illuminate your holy word; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Old Testament Lessons Isaiah 5:1 7 and Isaiah 43:1 4a (read in Japanese, French, and Korean) Let me sing for my beloved my love-song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watch-tower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; he expected it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. And now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. What more was there to do for my vineyard that I have not done in it? When I expected it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes? And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and it shall be overgrown with briers and thorns; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are his pleasant planting; he expected justice, but saw bloodshed; righteousness, but heard a cry!... But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Lector: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Anthem Come to the Water John Foley (b. 1939) arr. Howard Helvey O let all who thirst, let them come to the water. And let all who have nothing, let them come to the Lord: without money, without price. Why should you pay the price, except for the Lord? And let all who seek, let them come to the water. And let all who have nothing, let them come to the Lord: without money, without strife. Why should you spend your life, except for the Lord? And let all who toil, let them come to the water. And let all who are weary, let them come to the Lord: all who labor, without rest. How can your soul find rest, except for the Lord? And let all the poor, let them come to the water. Bring the ones who are laden, bring them all to the Lord: bring the children without might. Easy the load and light: come to the Lord. *Gradual Hymn 548 (Stanzas 1 2) In Christ There Is No East or West (All turn to face the Gospel Procession.) *Gospel Lesson Matthew 21:33 46 (NT page 22 3) Lector: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. *Gradual Hymn 548 (Stanzas 3 4) In Christ There Is No East or West Sermon Great Expectations Response Call to Prayer Minister: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Minister: Let us pray. Isa. 55:1, 2; Matt. 11:28 30 mckee mckee Prayers of the People (The Prayers of the People today are crafted around 5 key themes: Discover, Heal, Learn, Serve, and Teach.) At the end of each petition: Minister: Lord, you have been faithful through the generations. People: May you show your faithfulness in the years to come.

Offertory Anthem Let All the World in Every Corner Sing Dominick Argento (b. 1927) Let all the world in every corner sing, my God and King. The heavens are not too high, his praise may thither fly: The earth is not too low, his praises there may grow. The Church with Psalms must shout, no door can keep them out: But above all, the heart must bear the longest part. *Doxology George Herbert ( ) lasst uns erfreuen Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Alleluia, Alleluia! Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Sending Forth *Prayer of Thanksgiving *The Lord s Prayer (All are encouraged to pray the Lord s Prayer in the language of their choosing. The English version is number 895 in the hymnal.) *Benediction *Closing Processional Hymn (Please see page eight.)
