Trinity Times "O M C." Trinity Episcopal Cathedral July 2018 Volume 14 Issue 7 In this issue F D P P A..9 V H B E C...10 W /C.. 11 V B A FIRST AID/CPR C (!) From the Dean s Pen Dear friends and Family of Trinity Cathedral, Grace and Peace be with you from our Risen Lord and Savior! Amen. I have two topics that I wish to address with this pastoral le er that extends from two areas that the Vestry has recently addressed. The first is the Capital Campaign; the second is a change in worship me of the 10:30 AM Service to 11:00 AM as we begin our new educa on program in September. We want to commend the Development Commi ee Team who have done an excellent job, far and beyond the call of duty, in addressing the physical needs of our facility where a en on is needed for expansion and renova on. Their work with the Co age Mee ngs was highly successful and beneficial. An aspect of our work to be addressed now, which the Vestry will take on with the guidance of a church financial consultant in structuring a formal Capital Campaign, is to do strategic planning, develop our vision/ mission story, do a feasibility study, and examine our giving capability. In addi on, at present, the architects are developing concept drawings in light of their examina on of our physical plant and the needs being expressed to expand our ministry and programs. This period of me will be a silent phase over these next few months as we do this necessary prepara on for a successful financial campaign launch. The Vestry is also aware that this summer the Finance/Budget Commi ee will be proposing a budget for This campaign occurs with the autumn months, and we need no other campaigns opera ng while that founda onal pledge program for our daily opera ons has been completed. Therefore, this me will grant us the needed breathing space to silently work behind the scenes with the cri cal and necessary building blocks for a Capital Campaign launch in I ask two things, that if you have ques ons or concerns, please reach out to the wardens or me, and that you pray for your leadership in organizing these cri cal building blocks for our Campaign. The second item that I want to address here is the decision the vestry has made to alter our worship schedule in September to accommodate our new and expanded Chris an Educa on program. With our calling of a third priest, Rev. Mikayla Dunfee, we are working this summer to develop our plans for a formal Sunday School Program for all ages. C. 2...
P AGE 2 Welcome Our 9:00 AM Service will be defined in a 45 minute me frame for worship and an addi onal 30 minute Sunday School to follow. This addi onal me required for the success of this educa on program brings us too close to a comfortable transi on for a 10:30 AM Service. Therefore, the Vestry feels that to encourage the growth and development of our families, the youth, and the children with this program and new clergy leadership, this expansion and change be er meets our needs and offers greater success with a Chris an Educa on program. As our survey with the 9:00 AM Service proved, this new design recognizes that the families are commi ed and are here on Sunday mornings, and this is the best me to insert an educa onal component that does not work with other mes of the week. The added bonus is that we not only restore a true Sunday School program, but we create educa onal programs for ALL ages and genera ons with this me slot. A very exci ng venture as we con nue to see growth in the Holy Spirit here! Blessings, Father William+ Ever Consider a Spiritual Pilgrimage? O J : A 28 M 8. W (11) S E S C A C. T F W F J Trinity Cathedral has been blessed with an opportunity, under the leadership of our Dean, Father William, to lead an eleven day pilgrimage to Scotland and England right after Easter We will visit numerous historical sites that are foundational to the development and growth of the Anglican Church with its Celtic roots. We will experience such places as the Island of Iona, the holy island of Lindisfarne, Canterbury and York Minster. There will be opportunities to worship with some of the communities we visit, have a daily journal, reflections and sharing time as we look at the lives of several saints: St. Cuthbert, the Venerable Bede, and St. Columba; as well as the significance of early faith communities in such places as Windsor Castle, Canterbury, York, Durham, and Glasgow. We will have an Orientation Meeting in September after morning worship. In the meantime, please take your inquiries to Father William.
P AGE 3 Artown Did you know? that we have Prayer Ministers at the 10:30 AM Eucharist who are in the side chapel (Bishop Lewis Chapel to the le or east side of the church) who are there to have prayers with you during the me of Communion Distribu on? Simply go to the chapel a er you have received communion or a blessing, and a prayer minister will ask you for what you wish to pray, then will pray with you. This very personal means of experiencing prayer is one way we manifest the presence of our Lord in our midst! No prayer is too big or small for us to handle together.
P AGE 4 Children & Families Children and Family News Join us at The Children Service, Sundays at 9:00 AM We may be relaxing over the summer, but is Jesus ever busy! This month he heals sick people, feeds and teaches thousands, trains disciples, walks on water, and takes only one day off! Growing spiritually never stops, and summer can be a great me for family spiritual growth. You might find it more relaxed to make it to Church every Sunday, begin a dinner me prayer prac ce, or take on a community project as a family to help others. Our new priest, Rev. Mikayla will be stopping in to meet all of you soon, and she ll be with us full me come September! You re going to love her! See you there! Rick+ Coming up at the Family Service in July: July 1.Jesus heals a li le girl. July 8 Jesus amazes everyone with his teaching. He sends out his 12 disciples to teach what he has taught them.. July 15 King Herod feels guilty about how he treated John the Bap st. July 22 Jesus teaches his disciples that now and then they need to get away and rest. Wherever he goes, he s a big celebrity, and he heals everyone who is sick. Is your child going into 6th Grade? They can join the Youth Group this fall! All youth in 6 th 12 th grades are invited to join our Episcopal Youth Community this fall when we start up again! As a parent, have you wondered how to keep your newly minted teenager (or near teenager) interested and involved in Church and growing spiritually? There are a lot of ways to do that, but one is As a parent, have you wondered how to keep your teenager (or nearteenager) interested and involved in definitely to support them being involved in the Youth Group here at the Cathedral! Joining the Youth Group, they get a chance to talk with their peers about tough issues, make new friends, and have some small group me with our clergy. Research says we all tend to stay involved at Church mainly because of rela onships with others. Help create that e for your child by priori zing their involvement in our Episcopal Youth Community. Our new priest, the Rev. Mikayla Dunfee will be facilita ng the Youth Group this fall! The Youth Group usually meets the 1 st & 3 rd Sundays 12:30 2:00 PM. We socialize, worship together, talk about spiritual topics like our prayer lives, caring for others, and whether we should take Scripture literally in all cases. In addi on to spiritual forma on, we have dealt with current topics such as making friends, chea ng on exams, and even gun violence in schools. The first mee ng of the month the Church has provided pizza, and the mee ng on the third Sunday, we usually have a potluck lunch.
P AGE 5 Outreach Home Means Nevada" affordable housing Update! Ac onn Community Organizing Training Sat., July 21, 9:00 AM 4:00 PM Be one of the people trained to listen and organize the community to make a difference in our needs for affordable housing and other community issues. Ac onn is offering a free training Sat., July 21, 9:00 AM 4:00 PM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church ( th St.; Sparks NV 89431, right behind the Sparks Library.) Join us for a powerful training to build and strengthen the skills we need to fight for jus ce and make our community a place where all people can live and thrive! Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP to Info@Ac onn.org so they can have an accurate lunch count. Nevadans for a Common Good: A Community Organizing Orienta on Mee ng An excellent mee ng with Paul Turner, lead organizer from Nevadans for the Common Good, and Barbara Paulson, a member of NCG from Boulder City was held at St. Peter s in Carson City on Saturday, June 16 th. (Back in the fall, Bishop Dan ini ated and hosted a mee ng with Paul Turner and Barbara Paulson with a few leaders and members of our Episcopal Churches here in the northeast at the Cathedral.) Paul took the gathering through a history of the Industrial Areas Founda on beginning in Chicago, listening to and organizing labor issues with Hormel meat plants. He followed by drawing a dis nc on between mobilizing and organizing, in which mobilizing focuses more on issues and organizing focuses more on building rela onships through ins tu ons and iden fying issues out of those rela onships and ins tu ons. Community organizing speaks deeply to the mission of social jus ce in our various faith communi es. It is one piece of our mission as Episcopal parishes that we have yet to inten onally engage in with this part of our state; Nevadans for the Common Good are strong and been very successful in Las Vegas. Our Northwest Mission District needs to be involved in this conversa on also. It will be good to have our own version of Nevadans For the Common Good in the northwest. The group is moving ahead with a subcommi ee which will eventually morph into a Sponsoring Commi ee for the organizing effort. We include, but are not limited to Rev. Kristen Marshall, Reno 1 st UMC Art Ga e, Reno 1 st UMC Debe Hays Vaughn, St Peter s Carson City Karen Linsley, Center For Spiritual Living Carson City Fr. Tom Blake, Capital City CIRCLES Ini a ve Rev. Chad Adamik, St Paul s Lutheran Carson City Jeanne e Miller, St Peter s Carson City Marie a Sophie Paul, St Peter s Carson City Fr. 6 P AGE 6 Outreach Bible & Books will return this Fall S! We take a break from Bible & Books for the summer, but we ll be back in the fall! We re already ge ng excited about our new fall line up of books! Bible & Books meets every Sunday at 9:00 AM in Conference Room A downstairs in the Parish Hall across the parking lot from the Church. Join us for coffee or tea and great conversa on! Help Staff Trinity s Booth at Gay Pride Sat., July 28! Many LGBT women and men have been hurt and o en trauma zed by their churches of origin. Too o en, they have not heard the true Gospel message that God loves everyone and accepts you as you are! Episcopal Churches in the Reno Sparks Trinity, St. Paul s, and St. Catherine s are joining to create a welcoming presence at this year s Gay Pride celebra on in Wingfield Park on Saturday, July 28. We need your help to share Trinity's message of welcome to our LGBT neighbors. If you would be willing to help out for only an hour or two Saturday, July 23, please sign up in the back of the Church. Indicate whether you are available morning or a ernoon, and then check off what you'd be willing to do: Set up (7:30 8:30 AM); Staff the Booth during the day for an hour or two, or; Take down the booth at the end of the day (4:00 5:00 PM).
P AGE 7 Music Thank you Father William for helping to make my transi on back to Trinity a smooth one. I have always enjoyed working with Father William and genuinely look forward to working with him in the coming year. Harpsichord We now have a beau ful harpsichord thanks to Kathryn Menges who donated the instrument. A big thank you to Howard Benne and Pat and Kirk Gardner for bringing it to Trinity from the Truckee area. Jose, one of our sextons also helped in placing it where it now is. We hope to have it up and playing soon, as it can poten ally make a lovely addi on to worship services as well as making Trinity Cathedral more musically diverse and accessible to outside groups who use instruments like these. Summer Choir It was great to have the summer choir suppor ng the hymn singing this past Sunday. Many congregants commented on how helpful it is to hear their wonderfully concerted voices. One of the most important func ons of any choir in worship services is to support the hymn singing by listening to one another for blend as well as listening to the congrega on for when more or less support is needed. Everyone in the summer choir fulfilled these needs beau fully! Artown We have a very exci ng and busy Artown this year. Bob Snavely took care of all of scheduling prior to my arrival. Thank You Bob! He has also been very gracious and generous with his me in bringing me up to speed on things. The concerts are posted on the Pipes on the River schedule online now as well as in front of the church via a magnificent banner. For anyone desiring to view this schedule, simply go to the Trinity website. Scroll over the Music tab and select the Pipes on the River link. Reverend Rick is the reason this informa on is now accessible through the website as well as Trinity having such an a rac ve banner. Thanks Rick! Michael Lynch
