1 Trinity Times "O M C." Trinity Episcopal Cathedral May 2018 Volume 14 Issue 5 In this issue F D..1 2 PENTECOST SUNDAY C S P A..9 V H B E C...10 W /C.. 11 V B A From the Dean s Pen Grace and Peace be with you from our Risen Lord and Savior! Amen. As I write these words I am preparing also for the 4 th Cottage Meeting with members of our cathedral faith membership. (If you have not signed up to attend, please call the office so we can get you assigned. We are open to create new groups as needed through May.) I rejoice in these opportunities to meet in smaller, intimate settings with our membership. The meetings have been spirit filled, exciting, and informative. A great deal of energy and support is being witnessed. I am extremely grateful to the folks that have acted as our hosts in opening their homes! Our Cottage Meetings are an opportunity for your responses to our broad proposed vision for the decades ahead as we develop, grow and expand as our diocesan cathedral, specifically at this present time with a plan to renovate the interior worship space. We are addressing not only safety factors with the multiple chancel platforms (removal of six of the nine), but years of neglect in maintaining our physical plant. There is a need for repairs to walls and pews from water damage prior to the time of our new roof, fresh paint, some repairs to and protective glass for our stained glass windows, new floor surfaces (carpeting is 40 years old and came from one of the local casinos). Then there are needs for improved lighting and sound to support our liturgy and worship services. The benefits are numerous to this initial work. We strive for a safe, open space that is flexible and suitable to our diverse worship styles, services, and concert use; we envision better lighting and sound that is controlled for specific usage; we see a need to repair C Co age Mee ngs A huge THANK YOU to all the hosts and hostesses that opened their homes to our Co age Mee ngs to converse about our Renova on Plans and coming Capital Campaign: Imagine, Enrich, Rejoice! We thank Sandi Brooke, Lynne and Rich Charlat, Annie and Wes all, Ginny Nelson, Carol and Ted Moore, Stephanie Tall, and Diana and Bob Sauerbrei for their gracious hospitality in opening their homes to us. We also are grateful to all of the Vestry members and the Development Commi ee members who all have contributed to the presenta on at each mee ng. The result of our mee ngs was an experience of openness and encouragement that members are pleased with the progress and growth we are seeing with our expanding ministries and evolu on as the diocesan cathedral. More importantly the spirit felt at each mee ng expressed enthusiasm for our Dean s vision and leadership, as well as support for improvement and expansion of our facility to accommodate our growing ministries and outreach programs. This me of sharing informa on and pu ng forth support validates our leadership, our worship life, and our programs. We deeply appreciate all who made effort to a end these mee ngs and express their excitement for the work of Trinity.

2 P AGE 2 Outreach some and preserve all our stained glass windows; we see an opportunity to expand our outreach ministry to the community (especially the Sack Lunch Program) with kitchen appliances to gain a commercial status; and, we already have a growing fund for a concert grand to expand our growing music ministry. By the end of May as we bring the Cottage Meetings to closure and have an inventory of responses, we will launch our Capital Campaign: Imagine, Enrich, and Rejoice! This will be a pledge program that we will take through our 150 Anniversary Year, the Fall of 2020 to the Fall of A mass mailing will be done for the membership. Blessings to each and all, Father William+ Pentecost Sunday Celebra ng the Holy Spirit Sunday, May 20 Bishop Dan Edwards Annual Visit Easter is a Season of 7 weeks 49 days. The 50 th Day is the Day of Pentecost that commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit to the awai ng disciples gathered in Jerusalem. 40 days a er Easter, with the Ascension of our Lord returning to his glory at the right hand of God, Jesus instructed his disciples to stay in Jerusalem and wait for the comforter that would soon arrive to guide them into their future ministry. The Pentecost Story from the Book of Acts reveals how the disciples were set afire by the Holy Spirit empowering them to go into the world and proclaim the Lordship of Jesus. With the gi of languages they could go out into all of the world, empowered by the Spirit to be the living presence of Christ for others. And so the Church was given birth and our opportunity to celebrate that gi which is ours also. On Pentecost Sunday we have several special events taking place. First of all Bishop Dan Edwards will be with us for our annual visit. He not only comes to celebrate and preach among us with all of our weekend liturgies, but he will be conduc ng Confirma ons at our 10:30 A.M. Eucharist. The 9:00 AM Eucharist with children and parents will commemorate the Communion Milestone event for six of our children who completed a course with their parents under the leadership of Father William. We congratulate Anna, Jane, Briley, Elijah, Jack and Olivia along with their parents for their hard work and study. Their Communion Banners will adorn our worship space. (Thanks to Ann and Steve Towner for preparing the pa erns and images for the banners!) We will have a cake to celebrate this event at the close of the service with our fellowship me!. The 10:30 service will have mul ple things happening. In addi on to the Reading of the Pentecost Story with the hearing of other languages, we will witness three bap sm and affirm our own bap smal vows. Bap zed will be Zara (infant) and sister and brother, Imani and Thiago (children). Also we will see the Confirma on of several young people and adults: our young adults Leah, Sofia, Abigail, Ma hew, Raymond, and our adults, Nicholas Bajurin and Linda Hill. We will celebrate also with a special coffee hour with sheet cake to celebrate the day. Please take me to congratulate all of these individuals in these milestone events of spiritual growth and evolu on in their faith pilgrimage. We are proud of them all and con nue to offer our prayers and support!

Some special games are being planned. Save the date! PROVIDED: Burgers and hotdogs are provided for by Trinity Cathedral. We will have bo led water available. If you wish to bring beer or a keg we have purchased a permit to do so. We will supply condiments for the hot dogs and burgers PLEASE BRING: Side dishes and desserts; Your own beverages; Lawn chairs; Lawn games to share. SIGN UP on the list at the back of the Church. If you have ques ons, or would like to volunteer help, please contact Kait Flocchini or Rayann Pezonella Brown, or the office. Capital Campaign for the Renova on Trinity Sunday May 27, 2018 Our Name Day Celebra on Our parish leaders are working toward launching our Capital Campaign for the Renova on and soon will have materials to distribute through the cathedral membership: a le er of promo on, a pledge card and return envelope. We are s ll in process with our Naming Opportunity Book as a way to get a fuller picture of our endeavors. Already we have gathered significant funds, almost $200,000 with grants and founda ons and dona ons from several members and friends of Trinity. Our campaign will enable us to be more inten onal with seeking our funding as we will also be doing some one on one mee ngs with members. We will carry the campaign specifically for the interior renova on through our 150th Anniversary year of Trinity Sunday is the only Sunday in the Church year that does not observe an event in the life of Jesus or an aspect of his ministry (as we do during the green Sundays with the Sundays a er Pentecost). It is a Sunday that celebrates a doctrine our understanding of our God, the Holy Trinity as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. On Trinity Sunday we will celebrate with a Choral Mass wri en by Bruce Saylor. It is a sung liturgy with many parts led by the choir. Many por ons of the service will be sung by the choir (the Gloria [Glory to God in the Highest], the Sanctus [Holy, Holy, Holy], the Agnus Dei [Lamb of God you take away the world]). Other por ons that are sung will be done so on a single note, such as the Creed and the Lord s Prayer by the congrega on. Though doing such a Mass is not our theology of worship today (because it is less par cipa ve with much of the service led/sung by the choir) it is an opportunity to experience a bit of our history which created such beau ful music worship and praise of our Trinitarian God (however, this is a contemporary musical se ng). The a ernoon of Trinity Sunday will involve hos ng at Idlewild Park our Annual Episcopal jointparish picnic at 12:30 PM.

4 P AGE 4 Education Bible & Books May 6 June 3 Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Prac ces in Everyday Life by Tish Harrison Warren Through June 3, Bible & Books will be con nuing their discussion of Tish Warren s book Liturgy of the Ordinary. In the overlooked moments and rou nes of our day, we can become aware of God's presence in surprising ways. How do we embrace the sacred in the ordinary and the ordinary in the sacred? Framed around one ordinary day, this book explores daily life through the lens of liturgy, small prac ces, and habits that form us. Each chapter looks at something making the bed, brushing her teeth, losing her keys that the author does every day. Drawing from the diversity of her life as a campus minister, Anglican priest, friend, wife, and mother, Tish Harrison Warren opens up a prac cal theology of the everyday. Each ac vity is related to a spiritual prac ce as well as an aspect of our Sunday worship. Come and discover the holiness of your every day. New and used copies are available online at Amazon as well as a Kindle version for $8.63. Bible & Books meets every Sunday at 9:00 AM in Conference Room A downstairs in the Parish Hall across the parking lot from the Church. Join us for coffee or tea and great conversa on! John: The Gospel of Light and Life by Adam Hamilton Fr. William con nues to lead an adult class at 5:00 PM on Wednesdays, through May 16. It meets downstairs in the library of the Cathedral. The Gospel of John is the most deeply spiritual of the four gospels. This wri ng is filled with rich images and profound truths, but John notes that his aim in wri ng the gospel is that readers will not only believe in Jesus Christ, but that they may have life in his name. Adults, youth, and children alike can experience a season of spiritual growth and life changing renewal in Adam Hamilton s sixweek, DVD series, John: The Gospel of Light and Life. You ll follow the life, ministry, death, and resurrec on of Jesus through the Gospel of John and understand the context of some of the bestknown verses in the New Testament.

March April Vestry Mee ng Summary (April 16, 2018) A er opening prayers and sharing of blessings, Janet Williams, Junior Warden, led us with a study of I Corinthians 13:4 7. Will Aldrich was visi ng on behalf of the Compensa on Commi ee that recommended we develop and adapt guidelines for the compensa on of our clergy, which will also be offered as a model for our Diocese (who offers no established guidelines in hiring and compensa ng clergy in our diocese). In principle the Vestry unanimously adopted the report to make such a move and wish to examine financials to make a specific recommenda on next month, especially in regard to the compensa on of a dean which seems to be our first priority. Bob Snavely was present to recommend to the Vestry from the Organist Search commi ee the candidate for Church Musician/Organist and that the present salary package be offered with required benefits. The posi on will start June 1 st. This is a two year contract with the op on to extend it with a future evalua on. A Music Commi ee (five persons; made up of those from the search commi ee) is also being formed to work with the Church Musician and the music outreach programs. Vestry approved the hire. The name will be announced once the individual has made their present resigna on known and the present contract is signed. A Ministry Fair was further discussed for the fall, September 9 th with only ONE service to bring the en re congrega on together for a fes val celebra on. The planning commi ee will be chaired by Lynne Charlat and Lindsay Campbell to assist. The Shepherding Program was briefly discussed and because of concerns in having the strong founda on of dependable technology with an accurate membership data base, it became impera ve that we have our computer systems evaluated and see what needs to be done to upgrade dated systems. Approval was given to examine this situa on. The Keyless Entry System is being installed and fobs and codes are being distributed among staff, volunteers, and those in need of entry. So far posi ve responses are coming forth with the sense of security we have gained with this new system. In regard to the Renova on process, two bids, one from Pinnacle AC for the AC/Heat Pump system that may need to replace the swamp cooler in the near future, and the other from architect Gordon Aloiau for the Li Installment and ADA Bathroom addi on is in process and we await those quotes. A preliminary contract with Architect Mercedes Delagarza to begin preliminary conceptual work with the interior renova on is presently being evaluated by our chancellor. A deposit will be required once we complete the document. Grant money was received from the Marshall Mately Founda on of $30,000 for the purchase of our elevator li ; and $5,000 from the Benna Founda on for the Steinway purchase. Discussion was also focused on the Camp Galilee Capital Campaign commitment we have made to request the interest from the Endowment from 2016 and supplement it with a Camp Galilee Fes val income with a food fes val offered by Robert Andrade and the Camp chef here in the fall at Trinity. Year to Date Budget Actual Budget Actual Income $43,309 $34,695 $156,233 $152,202 Expenses $52,165 $48,304 $149,918 $132,232 Net $(8,856) $(13,609) $ 6,315 $ 19,970
