1 New Life in God s Love EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF T RESURRECTION The Rev. Christina van Liew Rector Rector s Reflections Dear Resurrec on People, I am in awe of your abundant generosity as you bring who you are and what you have to Resurrec on Living. Your gi s of energy, me, hope, imagina on, planning, grunt work, faith, and money tell our story be er than words. We love because God loved us first (1 John 4:19), and by sharing that love in truth and ac on (1 John 4:19) we are walking the way of Jesus. Our inten ons become reality as we prayerfully discern God s will and move in it. What we do becomes the incarna on of what we believe. This is why our Stewardship Team led us in a fall series called Walking the Way as we prepared to commit our gi s of money for the mission and ministry of Resurrec on. Walking the Way is not easy. If it seems easy, it s not the Way of Christ. But Jesus promised all the power we need to keep going, despite obstacles. God is with us every step of the way, and people are no cing! Let us con nue to discern how God is calling us to find and respond to the needs around us. We have a team from Resurrec on par cipa ng in a Diocesan Ini a ve for Vital Parishes. As they bring us ques- ons to ask, observa ons to share, and ac vi es to do, pay a en on! Respond with what you bring to the conversa on: perhaps a mix of hope, skep cism, imagina on, prayer, and commitment to ac on in RISE & SHINE! 2 2 Dear Friends, A Word from our Warden When you read this we will be back on Eastern Standard Time, the happy recipients of an extra hour s sleep. November brings with it cooler autumn weather and a number of dates for Resurrec- on people to mark on their calendars. I encourage you to make note of the upcoming events in this newsle er and to a end as many as possible. October ended on a high note. Our Penny Social, on the evening of Friday the 24 th, was a social and financial success. We extend a special Thank You to Dorothy Lo en and Diane Petraglia for cochairing the event, to Pa y McMahon for arranging the beau ful baskets we raffled and to everyone who helped make the evening a success. Many hands contributed to this fun filled evening. Sunday, October 26 th, was a very special day at Resurrec on. Ruth & Ray Rusche and their many years of ministry at St. Andrew s and Resurrec on were honored and celebrated. During the 10:00 am service Mother Chris na read a proclama on sta ng the numerous posi ons Ruth and Ray have held during their fi y-three years at this church. Preceding the recessional, they received a special blessing. Immediately following the service thirty-five people gathered in the undercro for a brunch to honor these long- me parishioners. Smiles were everywhere, memories shared and a good me had by all. Ruth and Ray, our love and prayers will go with you to California. You will always be part of our Resurrec on family! Watch for the Adopt A Family giving tree to appear in back of the church. We will once again have the opportunity to spread Christmas joy and blessings to those going through difficult mes. 3 3 (Rector's Reflec ons from page 1) prayer and deed. This is how we help God shape Resurrec on as a more vital presence in Williston Park and beyond. Blessings and joy, Annual Giving Campaign 2015 OFFERING AND BLESSING OF PLEDGE SUPPORT All Saints Sunday November 2, 2014 Praying for Our World Earlier this fall several members men oned they felt a strong need to pray for universal or global concerns. Some of the concerns were Israel, children caught in the immigra on situa on, ISIS, peace in the Middle East in general, mental health issues, and women sold into sexual slavery. Seven people iden- fied themselves as commi ed to pray for one or more of these concerns, and to gather with others who felt the same call to pray for the same problems. Thank you. This is not the least we can do; it is the most we can do to help bring God s new life into dark places. ~ The goal is always financial self-sufficiency: 60% income from pledging members; 20-40% from plate offerings, fundraisers, and property use; spend less than 20% of interest received from investments. Your faithful commitment and payment of pledges brings us closer to this goal, one year at a me. ~ Mary Pat Gannon being Received into the Episcopal Church Saturday, October 18, 2014 The Right Reverend Lawrence C. Provenzano, Bishop of the Diocese of Long Island, Cathedral of the Incarna on 11:00 am Mary Pat Gannon celebra ng at Dee Dee s, Floral Park, following Recep on and Holy Eucharist

Origin of Our Thanksgiving Day The Pilgrims le Plymouth, England, on September 6, Their des na on? The New World. Although filled with uncertainty and peril, it offered both civil and religious liberty. For over two months, the 102 passengers braved the harsh elements of a vast storm-tossed sea. Finally, with firm purpose and a reliance on Divine Providence, the cry of Land! was heard. Arriving in Massachuse s in late November, the Pilgrims sought a suitable landing place. On December 11, just before disembarking at Plymouth Rock, they signed the Mayflower Compact America s first document of civil government and the first to introduce selfgovernment. A er a prayer service, the Pilgrims began building hasty shelters. However, unprepared for the starva on and sickness of a harsh New England winter, nearly half died before spring. Yet, persevering in prayer, and assisted by helpful Indians, they reaped a boun ful harvest the following summer. The grateful Pilgrims then declared a three-day feast, star ng on December 13, 1621, to thank God and to celebrate with their Indian friends. While this was not the first Thanksgiving in America (thanksgiving services were held in Virginia as early as 1607), it was America s first Thanksgiving Fes val. Pilgrim Edward Winslow described the Pilgrims Thanksgiving in these words: Our harvest being go en in, our Governor sent four men on fowling [bird hun ng] so that we might, a er a special manner, rejoice together a er we had gathered the fruit of our labors. They four in one day killed as much fowl as served the company almost a week Many of the Indians [came] amongst us and their greatest King, Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted; and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought And although it be not always so plen ful as it was at this me with us, yet BY T GOODNESS OF GOD WE ARE FAR FROM WANT. In 1789, following a proclama on issued by President George Washington, America celebrated its first Day of Thanksgiving to God under its new cons tu on. That same year, the Protestant Episcopal Church, of which President Washington was a member, announced that the first Thursday in November would become its regular day for giving thanks, unless another day be appointed by the civil authori es. Yet, despite these early na onal proclama ons, official Thanksgiving observances usually occurred only at the State level. ~ Calling all Prayer Shawls! If you or a loved one have received a prayer shawl, please send us a quick note or about it. Tell us when, and for what occasion it was given, and to whom. We are compiling a story about this ministry, and your help in this manner is much appreciated. Do e Lo en Marjorie Mahoney

This is the most important, the first on any list. But there is a second to set alongside it: Love others as well as you love yourself. These two commands are pegs; everything in God s Law and the Prophets hangs from them. (Ma. 22: The Message)
