1 Trinity Times "Our mission is to welcome all people to know and live as Christ in the world Trinity Episcopal Cathedral October 2018 Volume 14 Issue 10 In this issue F D....1 S NEW P D A P C UTO O O. 7 B S S Y, M P V S F O..10 W /C.. 11 V B A, From the Dean s Pen Dear friends and Family of Trinity Cathedral, Grace and Peace to you from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. I begin by sharing this thought from the late Henri J.M. Nouwen. Put simply, life is a God-given opportunity to become who we are, to affirm our own true spiritual nature, claim our truth, appropriate and integrate the reality of our being, but most of all, to say Yes to the One who calls us the Beloved. Life is an opportunity and a journey a journey to saying Yes to the God who calls us Beloved. Life is a journey to love, to welcome and to invite; a journey to create peace and to live generously. In a reflec on on stewardship Bishop Robert C. Wright of Atlanta writes: When we give, we are par cipa ng in the personhood of God. We are par cipa ng in what is most real in the universe God's inexhaus bleness! We are making God real in the world by lending God our flesh through partnership. Growing our Generosity, this year s Annual Pledge Campaign, is about par cipa ng in God s inexhaus bleness. But first we must believe that God s love, healing, and forgiveness are inexhaus ble. We must overcome our trepida on about God s nature so that we can say Yes to God s call to partnership. If this sounds like a great risk, consider also these words of Bishop Wright: Growing Our Generosity When we give, you might say, we are rolling the dice in a game, the outcome of which we are already certain. God is love. And loving is giving. I invite you this year to take the risk of believing the outcome is certain and to par cipate in the inexhaus bleness of God by confidently joining our journey to greater generosity. Please consider commi ng to a standard of giving that reflects your standard of living. For many, that means giving 10 percent (the biblical the) of their income to God s work through Trinity Cathedral. For others, thing is a goal they are working toward by increasing their giving two or three percent each year, which is Propor onal Giving. Let us walk together with this Growing Our Generosity Annual Pledge Campaign so that the glory of God might shine brighter through the mission and ministries here at Trinity Cathedral! Blessings, Father William+

4 P AGE 4 Education and Bible Study Pastoral Care is something all Christians can do! T R. C R M, A P P C P L In the past, pastoral care is something that was seen as mainly the role of clergy. While that is s ll a major part of the clergy s work, as individual Chris ans, we all were given a new commandment: I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13 But where do you start? I would suggest the easiest place to start is by becoming a good listener. Being seen and heard truly and deeply being seen and heard is an incredible gi you can give to others. Here are some simple ps for becoming a good listener: Stop Talking (OK, you probably already figured this one out.) Receive whatever the other person offers: Listening is not the same as hearing. Listen for what they are really saying under the words. Be Pa ent: A pause, even a long pause, does not necessarily mean that the speaker has finished. Judgment doesn t help: Leave your moralism at the door. Don t feel like you have to fix things: It is much more important for a person to feel they have been truly and deeply heard. Acknowledge the other person s feelings: Perhaps share that you ve had similar feelings, but don t make it a story about you. Resist the urge to use clichés or to try and force good cheer on someone: I m sure you ll feel be er soon, Every cloud has a silver lining, He s in a be er place. it s just be er to be silent. Empower a person: Ask what has helped them deal with their suffering? If you can, point out where they ve handled things well and done what they can. Rick+ New Open Weekly Bible Study every Friday at 11:00 AM! L R. R Looking for a casual Bible Study to enrich your week? Beginning Rev. Rick facilitates an open Bible study 11:00 AM Noon every week. There is no prepara on and no homework. Each week, we will be reading the Gospel for the coming Sunday and sharing our thoughts about it in a relaxed table discussion. Feel free to drop-in when you are able to on Fridays, before coming to our Pipes on the River concerts (we end around 11:45 AM), or make it part of your weekly devo onal. Bring your lunch if you d like! We ll be mee ng in Conference Room A on the lower level of the Parish Hall (no stairs, yay!)
5 P AGE 5 Spiritual Education Bible & Books in October! A? We con nue our first book of the season, Crazy Chris ans: A Call to Follow Jesus by our Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry. If you saw his dynamite sermon at the royal wedding this past summer, you already have a sense of what an inspiring speaker and writer Bishop Curry is. From Amazon: What the Church needs, what this world needs, are some Chris ans who are as crazy as the Lord. Crazy enough to love like Jesus, to give like Jesus, to forgive like Jesus, to do jus ce, love mercy, walk humbly with God like Jesus. Crazy enough to dare to change the world. From the very first page, Bishop Michael B. Curry s fresh, robust take on religion is unafraid to ask the tough ques ons. Crazy Chris ans is an upfront, unflinching call to those who boldly follow Christ and dare to march to beat of their own drum. The Book of Revelation: A Book of Hope A F. W N. 14! Some of the most hopeful and comfor ng Scriptures in the Bible are found in the Book of Revela on. Unfortunately, many Chris ans avoid studying it because of some of the unusual and, let s admit it, downright bizarre images in its pages. Some are also uncomfortable with the book of Revela on because we have seen how some twist its words to serve their own ends everything from predic ng the end of me to accusing anyone and everyone of being the An -Christ. What most people don t realize is the main message of the Book of Revela on is one of hope! said Fr. William. Join him on Wednesdays, from 5:30 6:30 PM, for an eight-week study of the Book of Revela on. We meet in Conference Room A of the Parish Hall, and you are welcome to bring your own snacks or dinner to munch on during the class. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth... 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the irst things have passed away. Rev. 13 Our Caregiver support group has been retired After eight years, we have retired our Caregiver Support Group. We know, however, T R. C R M, A P P C P L

7 P AGE 7 Music Thank you to Bonnie Strader who did all of the aethes c designs for the Music Ministry triptych, crea vely using all fall-colored themes throughout. Howard con nues to ensure the Trinity organ is at its best for our Pipes on the River concerts series faithfully climbing the drop-down stairs up into the pipe organ chambers to tune notes so out of tune that certain stops (sounds) would be unusable otherwise. A big thank you to Jim Heller who is now teaching our children music on Sundays in concert with Reverend Mikayla. We are using the now famous Stepping Stone teaching method, which focuses on teaching music via interac ve ac vi es. While to many it seems as though the par cipants are simply playing games, they are actually embodying fundamental music skills and techniques. As I had hoped, one of the most enjoyable parts of my job is working with the St. Cecilia Choir. Many congregants have come to me sharing how much they have enjoyed hearing the choir singing so beau fully. This is no accident, as they been working hard to offer meaningful anthems for the worship services. It is truly a blessing to stand before them and listen to the wonderful blend of their voices. After adjustments to the previous minutes the August Minutes were approved, and a quorum was established. The Treasurer s Report was in good order and approved. The Budget Proposal for 2019 was discussed: a figure of $575,000. It was proposed and enthusiastically received that in helping understand our budget, a visual pie chart show how our contributions/income is spent among all programs and ministry areas. Ministry: The Blessing of the Animals is scheduled for 3:00 PM on Sunday, September 30 th with Rev. Mikayla and the Youth organizing it. Great joy and appreciation was offered for the Ministry Fair and Picnic of September 9 th! It took a community and they came through. Property concerns addressed the quote at this time for protective windows over our unprotected stained glass windows (approx. $120K); the parish hall entrance door sidewalk to be worked on in October; the cost of updating and repairing our Carillon bells to have exterior and easier to maintain bell clappers ($65K); that the new east church wall rain gutter has finally been installed; and that our sewer line from the parish hall (after a minor flood) has to be examined (possible tree roots interfering on the west side of the church). A proposal was made and accepted to purchase a wireless head-piece microphone for Rev. Mikayla. Deans Report: The Bishop Transition Committee is making progress and soon will be announcing the schedule for the Bishop Candidates walkabout. We should be hosting an evening here in late October. Presently we are reviewing all leaders and volunteers for completion of certification with Safe Guarding God s Children, and some needing to get their licensing completed. Annual Pledge Campaign: A more involved program is being developed for 2019 with an every member outreach. The goal is twofold: convert general contributors to pledgers to be consistent with canon requirements for active membership; and, to do outreach calls to clean up our membership rolls by gaining vital contact information. The Annual Pledge Program for 2019, Growing our Generosity will be kicked off with a special Oktoberfest Dinner on Saturday, October 13 th. Pledge cards and materials will be sent out prior to that dinner. Information will also be presented in the Trinity Times and the weekly Trinity Times II. Unfinished Business: A proposal was made and approved to meet our gift for the Galilee Capital Campaign of 2017 with funds from our Designated Outreach and Endowment match. With New Business a review of the Music Therapy proposal to be offered monthly is still under discussion. Thank you for your on-going financial support!
