1 ALL SAINTS LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER JUNE, 2013 We just finished with Pentecost Sunday, but the season of Pentecost is the longest season of the church year. It goes from Pentecost Sunday un l one Sunday before Advent. A man was to meet a visi ng pastor at LAX, but he had never seen the minister. He scanned the faces of the incoming passengers and finally spo ed a man he was certain was the pastor. He walked up to the person he supposed to be the minister and said, Excuse me, aren t you Reverend Johnson, the minister I m supposed to pick up? No sorry, the man said. I m not a pastor, I just got a li le air sick on the flight. As Chris ans, I m afraid we all look a li le sick at mes. But, this is the season of Pentecost and the descrip on of Pentecost in Act 2 talks about some weird, wonderful goings on. The Holy Spirit descended and they began to speak in many different languages. At hearing the Pentecost commo on, a crowd gathered on the street outside saying, These Jesus people are drunk giving the rather dubious defense, why, it s only 9:00 in the morning, how could we be drunk? But, to read Acts 2 where people get the gi of God s Holy Spirit, the same Spirit that empowered Jesus, transforming a gang of virtual strangers into church, releasing new powers within them, healing old divisions, giving them the ability to speak, to hear, so much so that folk, watching them emerge from church that Sunday said, they are drunk is to read a story where we don t seem to fit in. I mean, when was the last me we came out of church so joyful, so out of control, cut loose, confused or overheated, that someone said of us, Look at those Chris ans, they are drunk! Li lefield, Texas. My confirma on class consisted of three kids two girls and a boy. I started a discussion about Pentecost and asked if they knew what Pentecost was. None of the three knew. So I told them when the church was si ng in a group and the Holy Spirit landed on them like tongues of fire on their heads and everyone spoke the Gospel in all languages of the world, two of the kids took this in stride, but the third looked astonished her eyes wide. I looked back at her and finally she said, Gosh, Pastor Lange, we must have been absent that Sunday. But, what does spirit mean? There is an Anglo-Saxon word GAST, which developed into GHOST as in Holy Ghost. This had in it the meaning of the old Norse, which has become GUST, the sudden movement of wind which sends earth behind the plow into a whirlwind, li s the hat and blows leaves around. The Old Testament word for spirit is RUACH which means breath, that which keeps me alive, and wind, but not just any wind, but the wind that glows in the Holy land and moves the sand doons each day from here to here to here. A wind that changes things. The Holy Spirit is the gust of wind that swings us around to look on God and redirect our ways. On the morning of Pentecost it was the breath of God that breathed into them and filled them with new life. So these a uned to God have perceived God s spirit rushing into their lives on occasion like a gust of wind. It may be the spirit rushing into a situa on in life that needs healing or a calming breeze or maybe a fresh surge of power of refreshing change that seem to come from nowhere. For the spirit is tangible and yet intangible, invisible and yet powerful, as real as the air that is full of energy, the wind, the storm as important to life as the air breath. It is the invisible power of God that is crea- vely ac ve. The spirit con nues today to be ac ve in the individual and in the church. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of God dis nguished as the Holy Spirit from the unholy spirit of mankind. The wind blows where it will. God s spirit will not be housebroken by us, but our souls might catch fire. But I would hate to see us nice, respectable people go out of church looking drunk. Or would I? 2 FATHER S DAY CARNATIONS Carna ons: You may order carna ons to honor and/or remember special men your life. A sign-up sheet and a dona on container will be on the table by Pastor s office. The flowers are $1.00 each. All the ordered carna ons will be on the altar on Sunday, June 16th to make up a bouquet of white flowers for those who have passed away and a blue flowers for those we wish to remember in special ways. LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF QUILT CAMPAIGN Buy Fair Trade. Send Quilts. Lutherans across the U.S. are joining in the 2013 Quilt Campaign, crea ng 500,000 quilts to send around the world to people in need. To help support the delivery of these important resources, 20 cents of every pound of Sisters Blend coffee sold in 2013 will go to the Quilt and Kit Shipping Fund. FATHER S DAY INDOOR PICNIC With the crazy, weird weather that Colorado has had this year, Miriam Circle has decided to celebrate Father s Day in a fun & crazy way with an indoor picnic immediately a er worship service in Terning Hall! Miriam Circle will be providing a brisket meat and the congrega on is invited to bring salads, side dishes and dessert! A sign-up sheet is provided in the Narthex so the ladies will know how many to set the picnic tables for! Picnic clothes & hats are also appropriate! Come and join the fun! 3 GOOD HEALTH IS A FAMILY MATTER The Life Line Screening organiza on will be at All Saints on Wednesday, June 12th from 8:30am to approximately 5:30pm. Pre-registra on is required. You may sign up on a form on the narthex table (they will call you back to make your appointment me) or call for more informa on or to schedule an appointment. Council approved Nelson Cederberg to contact a company to spray them. Pastor Tom Lange and Peggy would like to have everyone up to his ranch for a BBQ again this summer and also have another BBQ at the Cedaredge Parsonage. It was approved for the Call Commi ee to use up to $ for re-loca on of a Pastor, if needed. The House of Promise was given $ proceeds from the Spaghe Dinner Karen McFarland, President Heaven For Volunteers (unknown) Many will be shocked to find when the day of judgment nears, There s a special place in Heaven set aside for volunteers. Furnished with big recliners, sa n couches and footstools, Where there s no commi ee, no group leaders, no car pools, No eager team that needs a coach, no bazaar and no bake sale. There will be nothing to staple, not one thing to mail. Telephone lists will be outlawed, but a finger snap will bring Cool drinks and gourmet dinners and rare treats fit for a king.
