1 Trinity Times "Our mission is to welcome all people to know and live as Christ in the world Trinity Episcopal Cathedral December 2018 Volume 14 Issue 12 In this issue F D C....1 C E, A T P P C A E S V.. 5 C, Y F Y, M P...7 M, T P R..8 P A.. 9 D..10 W /C.. 11 V B A, From the Dean s Pen Dear Friends and Family of Trinity Cathedral, Grace and Peace to you from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. With the first Sunday of December we begin our new church or liturgical year. It is also a time to prepare our hearts, lives and homes for the celebration of the coming of our Lord with Christmas, the Feast of the Holy Incarnation. Just as it had been over 2000 years ago, people stand in the midst of a world stricken with fear, wars and threats of wars, poverty, persecution, oppression, and natural disasters. It is in the midst of all of this that we experience the presence of our God and Creator. We are reminded that all of this happening around us is not the will of a great puppeteer God who desires to punish us. Rather, it is a manifestation of the brokenness and sinfulness of a world where humankind have made themselves rulers and deities (as we were reminded on Christ the King Sunday). Despite this worldwide condition, there is our benevolent God manifesting around us hope, strength, courage, and faith to be shared with all in need. As we hear with the message of Advent, with open eyes and ears we ourselves experience the manifestations of an incarnate God who lives in, through, and among us. This is what Advent prepares us to know and to experience; this is what we celebrate with Christmas God with us - Emmanuel. Blessings, Father William+ You are cordially invited to experience the Lord Incarnate Christmas Services at Trinity Cathedral Christmas Eve Monday, December 24 Evening 4:00 P.M. 2 P AGE 2 Christmas Eve, Angel Tree Christmas Eve 4:00 PM Children and Family Eucharist With the 4:00 PM Service, the children are invited to bring the Christ Child infant from our home mangers to be processed and brought to the altar for a Christmas blessing. A the close of the services as families depart, there will be a Christmas tree ornament for every child to take home for their tree. We began this tradi on two years ago, and know that many are collec ng them each year. The ornaments are marked this year: Trinity Cathedral Christmas Angel Tree Project 2018 The Daughters of the King (DOK) THANK YOU for your rousing support of our Kick-Off Dinner held November the 9th in the Parish Hall. The 2018 Angel Tree Project includes over 80 families with children in need at Stead Elementary School. Each family includes all children from newborn to 18 years of age. Each Angel Tree Tag has a family number, the child s first name, the child s age, and three pieces of informa on (clothing, shoe sizes and 2 choices of a toy wish). The wrapped gi s need to be bundled and labeled with the tag (read the tag for further instruc ons). Each of those gi s within the bundle needs to have the child s name and family number wri en on the gi plainly so that if the gi s become separated, we will know that specific child s gi s. PLEASE return your wrapped and bundled gi s as soon as possible to help us organize them. All gi s need to be in by December 16th for the blessing during worship, and for delivery the next morning, December 17th. OOPS! If you should misplace your tag, please call Carolyn Hoffmann, , leave a message, and she will call you back and help you iden fy who you signed up for and get you a new tag. We can go back to the sign-up sheets and match you with the child. Don t wait ll the last moment, just call. VOLUNTEER! The DOK welcomes and needs your help. A volunteer sign-up list is in the back of the church. We need help December 16th organizing the presents and December 17th delivering the presents to Stead Elementary. The school has asked we deliver them by 9am (yikes), so we should be at the church by 8:00am to load the vehicles up, form a caravan, and get to the school on me! An Invite for those who have lost a loved-one in the past year Holidays such as Christmas that involves family gatherings and the sharing of fond memories and mes, can be a bit difficult to face for the first me without our loved one s presence. On Thursday, December 6th, at 12:15 PM (a ernoon) we will have a Contempla ve Service with Eucharist and Healing especially designed for those who have lost loved ones in the past year. This service offers wholeness and connectedness as we reconcile our broken lives and world with our God who comes to be in and with us, God Emmanuel.

3 P AGE 3 Pastoral Care S A T R. C R M, A P P C P L A few days before Halloween, I went grocery shopping, and there were aisles of Christmas ornaments, tree lights, banners, and wreaths being stocked by somewhat fran c store elves. I thought to myself in irrita on, "It's not even Halloween!" For much of our lives, we never live in the moment because we are too eagerly an cipa ng what comes next. I remember when I was younger thinking, "When I am 16 and can get my driver's license, then I'll be happy." And then a er I got my license, I was thinking, "When I graduate from high school and get to college, that's when life will really begin for me!" And then it was, "When I graduate from college... when I finish my masters degree... when my kids are a li le older... when my kids are out of college..." And so it goes. Sound familiar to you? If you are like me, then Advent, that begins Sun., Dec. 2, is a season tailor made for you! It is the me when the Church urges us to slow down, wait, rest... something wonderful is right around the corner. We try not to get too busy or distracted by all the ads and the nsel and the par es. For Episcopalians, it is a quiet me of joyful an cipa on. While we s ll put up our Christmas lights and trim our trees and shop, we balance all that with peace and wai ng... because we know there is a great miracle right around the corner, and we don't want to miss it. New Open Weekly Bible Study every Friday at 11:00 AM! L R. R Looking for a casual Bible Study to enrich your week? Rev. Rick facilitates an open Bible study 11:00 AM Noon every week. There is no prepara on and no homework. Each week, we will be reading the Gospel for the coming Sunday and sharing our thoughts about it in a relaxed table discussion. Feel free to drop-in when you are able to on Fridays, before coming to our Pipes on the River concerts (we end around 11:45 AM), or make it part of your weekly devo onal. Bring your lunch if you d like! We ll be mee ng in Conference Room A on the lower level of the Parish Hall (no stairs, yay!) Angel Tree Gi s are due PRIOR to December 16th, not only for the Blessing of the Gi s in Church on Sunday, December 16th, but to assist the Daughters of the King in bundling the gi s (by families) for delivery the next day, December 17th. If you can get them wrapped and delivered to us in church before then you will receive greater blessings!

4 P AGE 4 Adult Education /Sound Therapy Bible & Books in November! T S C T M From Amazon: What does finding the soul of Christmas mean to you? If you think it s about taking a heavy, stern theological approach to a joyful holiday, or bera ng others about the reason for the season, then you don t know Thomas Moore. Moore, bestselling author of Care of the Soul and many other soul-centered books, turns his poe c a en on to the Christmas season in this explora on of the deeper meaning behind holiday tradi ons. Using his trademark blend of storytelling, faith, and insight, he shows how our ordinary prac ces of gi -giving, singing carols, gathering with family and friends, and pu ng up trees have roots in ancient sacred tradi ons and how those prac ces guide us to a way of life that is nothing short of revolu onary in today s culture. On Amazon, new hardback copies are $18.17, used copies are available from $1.43, and the Kindle version is $9.99. Bible & Books meets every Sunday at 9:00 AM in Conference Room A downstairs in the Parish Hall across the parking lot from the Church. Join us for coffee or tea and great conversa on! Each day every member makes one quick phone call to the person they are assigned to call, just enough me to say hello and check in. Every day members will make and receive a phone call. The purpose is to make a connec on on a daily basis to offer friendly support. The calling schedule is maintained for a few months, and then it is revised so new connec ons and new friends are made. Each person submits contact informa on in case members cannot be reached. If you are interested in being part of this circle, please call our office at

5 P AGE 5 Spirituality and Volunteers What are we waiting for? A R S., D. 15, 9:00 AM N It seems some mes our whole lives are spent wai ng; wai ng to graduate from high school, then college, wai ng for our first child, wai ng for that big promo on, then for re rement always wai ng. In this season of wai ng Chris ans call Advent, we pause to ask ourselves, "What are we really wai ng for?" While all the world seems to be wai ng for shopping to be done, packages to arrive, and the latest sale markdown, we can't help but sense there has to be something more. During our half-day retreat, Sat., Dec. 15, you will explore what you are personally wai ng for, both in terms of the Christmas story and in your own life. In the middle of this hurried season, take a few hours to pause and listen for a deeper, quieter note beneath all the rushing. Cost of the retreat is $10.00 for materials and lunch; scholarships available. You can sign up at the back of the Church or online at our website.. If you have ques ons, you can see Rev. Rick a er Church or contact him at R R T R. Volunteers needed to Staff Homeless Shelter Dec. Mar. There is a significant shortage of homeless shelter space in Washoe County during the winter months. Consequently, many homeless people will be spending bi erly cold winter nights outside. Would you be willing to volunteer to help change that? The City of Reno is partnering with local religious groups and Ac on (our local community organizers) to open and staff addi onal emergency overflow shelters to address this urgent need. They are large heated tents next to the exis ng shelter on Record St. Various faith communi es have agreed to provide three or more volunteers to staff this shelter from 8:30 PM to 6:00 AM on nights throughout the winter months. If we get enough volunteers, this o en can be done in shi s. Signing up does not obligate you to any par cular night; it just puts you on a mailing list to which the specific monthly sign up for nights will be sent. There is a brief training program you can view online. The link is on our website. Click on the Volunteers needed to Staff Homeless Overflow Shelter Dec. Mar. announcement on the right-hand side of the homepage. Last year, members of the Trinity congrega on stepped up and helped with this ministry, and they felt it was very moving. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to get directly involved helping the folks we see on our doorstep every day! We will only be commi ng to a few nights each month, depending on how many volunteers we get, and no one will be scheduled more than the number of nights you feel you are available and willing to handle. You can sign up in the back of the Church, or you can contact Rev. Rick at RevRick@TrinityReno.org if you have ques ons. Dates for Sound Therapy classes: We hope to see many of you. For your calendars, here are the next six upcoming dates: Dec. 18, Jan. 15, Feb. 19, Mar. 19, Apr. 16, May 21.
