3 4th Sunday of Ordinary Time January 31, Dear Family and Friends of Father Robert Herne, My sympathy and prayers are with you as you gather for the funeral rites for Fr. Herne. I regret that I cannot be with you personally, but I am with you in your grieving and assure you that I have remembered Fr. Herne, his family, his dear friends and classmates, and all of you at the Lord s Table. As we pray that God would quickly receive Father Herne into the fullness of eternal life, we must also lift up prayers of gratitude, especially for his many years of priestly ministry among us. He was known as a priest s priest who brought the love of Jesus to those he met while serving at several parishes as an assistant pastor, as a resident for many years at Sacred Heart parish in Palos Hills and as the founding pastor of Our Lady of the Brook parish in Northbrook. Under his leadership and pastoral guidance for almost a quarter century, the parish grew and flourished. His great devotion to the Blessed Mother spurred his lifelong participation in the Legion of Mary, and his support for collegiality, adult education, and formation encouraged generations of parishioners to offer their skills, expertise, and talents for the sake of the Church. Together with you, I am deeply grateful for the generosity with which Fr. Herne gave his life to the Lord during his 69 years as a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago. More recently, he enjoyed spending time with his young friend at the Bishop Lyne Residence, but his life was always given in kindness, community building, with concern for others and a fervent belief in the power of the Holy Spirit. Let our faith in the power of the risen Lord be a source of consolation and hope for those of us who remain. May Fr. Robert Herne s example of generosity guide us in the path of service particularly during the Jubilee of Mercy and, as he was so fond of saying, let us just say Amen, Alleluia good and faithful servant. We cannot (by law) publicize the health status of any of our members without their permission. Names for the sick list spoken at Mass and placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family and permission has to be given. We will announce the name at Mass for three weeks. After that, the name will be placed on the bulletin sick list. Names on the bulletin sick list can remain there as long as the person is ill. Please inform the parish of any changes in the person s health. Those wishing to receive a Communion Visit should call the parish office and request it. We will need their name and location, and how long they will need visits. It make take some time to find a Minister of Care who can arrange to visit. 5 4th Sunday of Ordinary Time January 31, Bulletin Building Blocks - 4th Sunday of Ordinary Time TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For the first four centuries or so, there seems not to have been a sense of marriage as a church institution. Christians followed civil law, which kept the wedding in a family setting. Bishops wanted people to be good citizens insofar as possible, and so they recognized the government s role in marriage. In general, they expected Christians to know that marriage was good, that marriage to other Christians was best, and to take it easy on the wild wedding parties. They agreed that marriage was a divine institution, that Christ blessed it especially, and they loved referring to the miracle at the wedding feast of Cana. Still, even when Christianity became the official religion of the empire in 380, marriage remained a family matter. On wedding days people gathered in the bride s house, where the father would give her hand to her husband, draping a garland of flowers over the couple. There were no official words to say, there was no blessing to be given. Everyone walked in procession to the bride s new home for the concluding rites and the feast. In the Eastern Empire, it soon became customary to invite a priest or bishop to give a blessing at the meal or the day before. It was a nice thing to do, completely optional, but had a photo-op feel to it that was widely emulated. It s not too soon to say our joint OLB-St. Norbert parishes men s Silent Retreat at Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House is scheduled for February However, there are other weekend options available, if this weekend does not work for you, as well as other types of retreat experiences. Please see the table signs at the entrances and the registration forms in the wall racks as you enter the worship area. As in prior years [1] there are NO group allocations, and [2] a registration fee of $85.00 is required to make a reservation. What does this all mean? If you plan to attend you must take the initiative to reserve a space for yourself. 7 4th Sunday of Ordinary Time January 31, Religious Education & Youth Ministry Children s Liturgy of the Word Children s Liturgy of the Word is offered at the 10:00 AM Mass through May. This program is for children age 3 through grade 5. Liturgy of the Word for Children is an opportunity for families to attend Mass together, with children dismissed during the Liturgy of the Word to experience and learn about the readings with a community of other young people. SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION 2 nd GRADE FIRST RECONCILIATION All 1 st communicants, in preparation for First Holy Eucharist, will make their First Reconciliation Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 7pm in SN church. During the service the children will write down one or two things they are sorry for to help them talk to the priest. They will receive individual absolution and return to sit with their parents and say their penance. This simple ceremony initiates the children into this beautiful sacrament of forgiveness. All communicants and at least one of their parents are to attend. Theology of Park Ridge: Program Ending The Theology of Park Ridge program will end after 50 years! 8 Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 8 A NEW SYMBOL FOR OUR SHARED MISSION It will be two years this coming summer that Archdiocese named Fr. Bob as the pastor of our two parishes in Northbrook. With that announcement, Frs. Bob and Dan have increased their efforts to serve the spiritual needs at both St Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook. The parish councils, staffs, and ministry heads have helped with input and actions to ease the strain on them and help lead the way. Since August, the two parish councils have been meeting and acting as one, unified parish council. As we struggled to name our new reality, we wanted to ask the question: Who do we say we are? A survey was commissioned at both parishes in early September and it chose as its vision of who we are, the Catholic Community of Northbrook. Yes, we are Our Lady of the Brook and St. Norbert- two Roman Catholic parishes in Northbrook working together as one to proclaim and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ. More discussion at the joint parish council led to the creation of a symbol to identify this larger vision and better define the process of bringing together our two parishes as one unified community. The Chi-Rho ( kai ro) Christogram shown here was chosen from several suggestions, and is our new unifying symbol. It is an ancient symbol carved in the catacombs by early Christians as proud followers of Jesus, the Christ, i.e., the Messiah, God of the new covenant. It represents us as followers of Christ walking together unifying us in a common mission. It was originally formed by superimposing the first two letters, chi and rho (XP), from the Greek word that meant Christ. It was also used by the Greek scribes meaning good and was adapted by Emperor Constantine as his rallying standard. The halo design surrounding the Chi-Rho, representing the wreath found in some uses, symbolizes the victory of the Resurrection and the X reminded some Christians of the heavenly cross. It is seen today in many of our churches and on some of the vestments worn by our priests at Mass. As our two parishes move forward to fulfill our vision as the Catholic Community of Northbrook, this symbol will be used as a reminder of this commitment of strengthening the vitality of our community for the long-term future. In the short-term, we will begin to see this symbol more prominently in our parish communications, especially in our soon-to-be shared bulletin. (Scheduled for February 14) These steps will continue to keep us moving forward on this new path that Christ has set before us, helping us to keep our eyes on Him as we continue the journey!
