3 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 14, The BIG EVENT: PART ONE takes place this week. I refer to the release of The Deathly Hallows: Part I, the final story in the Harry Potter saga. From the time the book was published I found the title intriguing. The word hallow is pretty much relegated to the great pile of archaic words that one can find only in unabridged dictionaries. It is used in the common version of the Lord s Prayer and in the tern Halloween both of these usages date back several centuries to when hallow was in everyday use. It is one of those words that can be a verb (to hallow something is to bless it) or a noun (something that is blessed). Given the plasticity of English it can be transformed into an adjective, and most likely it can become an adverb if you tack an ly onto it. But as I noted, it s archaic, so who cares? For the uninitiated, the Deathly Hallows in questions are the invisibility cloak, the resurrection stone and the elder wand, or death stick. They are among the magical object in the wizarding world of HP. They are, in today s English, deadly blessings. The Hallows are gifts that people want but don't need: secrecy, immortality and power. They are given by death and unless used properly, lead to death. Of course, only HP is able to use them properly. That is a gross simplification of the plot, but that s o.k. Don t we already know that we often want what we don t need? And isn t it good to be reminded of it now and then? Part two of this final Harry Potter movie comes out in July. I ll be ready. 5 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 14, Bulletin Building Blocks - 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time SAINT ROSE PHILIPPINE DUCHESNE ( ) November 18 Pope Benedict once declared himself struck by how remarkably diverse our American saints are some native born: Mother Seton, Katherine Drexel, Kateri Tekakwitha; most, like many Catholics today, immigrants: Padre Serra, Bishop Neumann, Mother Cabrini, Rose Philippine Duchesne. When the French Revolution that dispersed her convent ended, Rose joined the Religious of the Sacred Heart, volunteering for their United States mission, opening the first free school west of the Mississippi. Only after lengthy service as Superior did Rose now seventy-one realize her life s dream, undertaking a mission among the Potawatomi Indians. When some worried about her advanced age and failing health, the Jesuit mission leader overruled them: She must come! She may not be able to do much work, but she ll bring the mission success by praying for us! Frustrated by her inability to learn their languages, Rose nevertheless spoke to the Native Americans by her prayerful presence before the tabernacle. 6 Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 6 Adult Faith Formation Be proud of your Catholic faith. Find ways to learn and grow in understanding of our history and the teachings of the Church. Participate in adult formation in your parish and share all that you learn with others (Catholics Come Home Chicago) It s not just about classes and programs adult faith formation consists of many different experiences and opportunities including but not limited to the Liturgy itself through the readings, homily, and music; our yearly parish mission; days of reflection and retreats; various bulletin articles and inserts; ministry formation; adult Confirmation preparation; RCIA; Baptism preparation for parents; and marriage preparation. There are multiple events going on through out the year that reach out and touch various parishioners in a wide variety of ways such as Fall Women s Day of Reflection: We had 30 women in attendance at our Fall Women s Day of Reflection (10/30) with Barbara Flynn. This included seven women from St. Alphonsus in Prospect Heights, as well as some of our neighboring Catholic parishes and the Village Presbyterian Church. The day was very well received by all with the desire that days like this be offered again. Thanks to Mary Ann Duderstadt, Maureen Hubbs, and Sandy Koziol for planning and making the day possible. Domestic Violence: Adult faith formation takes many forms and different venues as noted above. For many people, the Sunday homily is the primary adult faith formation experience. Although we may be uncomfortable with moral issues being addressed from the pulpit, this too is part of the proclamation of Kingdom. The month of October was designated National Domestic Violence Awareness month. Cardinal George asked that priests and deacons to devote their homiletic time to this moral issue on the weekend of 10/30-31 which we did. But it doesn t simply end there. In addition, we have placed baskets the women s washroom with the National Domestic Violence Hotline number. The card also contains useful information regarding assessing one s situation. This is being done to provide anonymity so that if a woman finds herself in this situation, while always welcome to speak to one of the Fr. Tom, Fr. Anand, Dcn Dennis or Dcn Peery, she need not do so to get help. Advent Season: 11/28-12/24 Once again we are going to highlight a different aspect of Advent-Christmas (as we did last year with the Jesse Tree) by focusing on the Advent Wreath, the music of the season, and the related scriptures on which this music is based. We will be starting the season with an Advent Lessons & Carols service on the 2 nd Sunday of Advent, 12/5, 5:00PM, in which we will be introduced to each of the candles of the wreath and their meaning. The Children s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) on Sundays will have a corresponding activity. On the Thursday adult faith formation sessions we will gather in the chapel at 9:15AM and again at 7:00PM to continue the reflection. Our meditation will conclude with our Lessons & Carol service at 10:00PM on Christmas Eve. There will also be another Catholics Come Home venture during the Advent-Christmas season with new materials on TV, the internet, and YouTube. The invitation is alive and well. We will be sharing the new ads with you in the Social Area on 11/28 and 12/5. New brochures and prayer cards will also be available. We ll be updating our Welcome packet for new parishioners or for those looking to return. Remember the best invitation is the invitation that you extend to a friends, neighbor or family member. Adult faith formation is also experienced through our various Human Concerns ministries, and during Advent The Giving Tree is our focus. Through this activity we provide Christmas gifts and food certificates to families at St. Martin de Porres, our Sharing Parish. Volunteer opportunities include being a coordinator for a group of families (preparing the Angels, ensuring everyone brings their gifts, packing gifts for pick-up by St. Martin s.) Everyone is invited to take an angel and then to be that angel. Beyond the parish while adult faith formation is not only provided at the parish level be it here at the Brook or one of our neighboring parishes, it is also provided by the Archdiocese. Parish Leadership Day -- Feb. 26, 2011 Each year the Archdiocese holds a Parish Leadership Day to provide formation to both clergy and laity who are engaged in parish leadership as staff, council, and commission members. This year there will be a presentation entitled Adults in Our Pews to which I have been invited to be a co-presenter. We ll have more on this event as we get closer to the date. Dcn Peery

7 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 14, Religious Education & Youth Ministry Children s Liturgy of the Word: Our Lady of the Brook Children s Liturgy of the Word, offered at the 9:30 AM Mass, is for children age 3 through grade 5. Liturgy of the Word for Children is an opportunity for families to attend Mass together, with children dismissed during the Liturgy of the Word to experience and learn about the readings with a community of other young people. Children then rejoin their families for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The St Norbert Religious Education Board members are planning an Advent project to be held November 21 after the 9:30am mass. Please save the date. More information to follow soon. RELIGIOUS ED NEWS There are Sunday Intensive classes this evening November 14. There will be 3 rd grade prayer services held this week that are part the annual Thanksgiving Feast celebrated by the 3 rd graders. Our 4:30 and 6:15pm Monday students will gather Nov. 15 during class, and Wednesday students will have their celebration Nov. 17 during their class period. Information regarding this event has been provided to the grade appropriate families. This feast corresponds with their curriculum studies of the Mass. We have extended the Food Drive thru tomorrow November 15, please be generous to serve those who truly are in need. Please join the RE Board Advent Project that will be held next Sunday, November 21 in the St. Norbert church basement hall. Reservations are due Weds. November 17. YOUTH MINISTRY: BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN FAITH & EVERYDAY LIFE WITH TEENS Selected Sunday Evenings 6:30-7:30 Hosted by St. Norbert s Church, we are continuing our wonderful BTG program for high schoolers. Once a month on Sunday evenings throughout the year, following the 5:30 mass, we will join together in St. Norbert s Church Basement in the Vineyard for dinner and discussion. We have pizza and soda, and we discuss things that affect your everyday life and how your faith helps you with these challenges. The evenings are scheduled to last an hour, but we will continue longer if it seems appropriate. You and your peers are integral in deciding what topics would interest high schoolers. Maggie Bruce and Judy Klein are the adults facilitating the program. Jimmy Thomas is our adult leader guiding discussions. 8 Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 8 GIVING TREE Over 400 angels have arrived and are hanging from the Christmas trees in the Social area. Please take the time to select several of them. We want all the families at St. Martin de Porres to have a Merry Christmas. You may also take a food box ornament and provide food for a Christmas dinner for one of the families on the blue panels in the Social area. Food Gift cards for the food boxes will be on sale after all of the Masses through December 5 th. Remember to put your name and phone number on the heart that is attached to the ornament and leave it in one of the boxes provided in the Social Area. Please purchase the gifts for your angel right away. In that way you won t risk losing the angel or forgetting to buy the gifts and rushing around at the last minute to buy them. Also, note that all gifts must be returned as soon as possible or by NOON, Sunday, December 5 th. If you are unable to shop for a gift, there is a box in the Social area marked DONATIONS. All of the money collected for donations is used to buy gifts or food cards for the families at St. Martin de Porres. If you have any questions about the ornament you selected or if you lost your ornament, please call Marian Steinwandtner at Lakeview Shelter: We Need YOU! We will be serving dinner once a month at the Lakeview Shelter from October through April. The night has changed from last year from the 1st Friday of the month to now the last Friday of the month. Serving time will remain 8:30 pm The sign up sheets will be in the social area and you can sign up for any of the months...either bringing food or going down to the shelter to serve the meal.
