3 Second Sunday of Ordinary Time January 18, Building an Ark Rev. Ron Rolheiser, OMI If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you. You will recognize these words as the opening lines of Rudyard Kipling s famous poem, If, and they, as much as any scriptural commentary, provide the key to understand the story of Noah and the Ark. What is the meaning of this story? Are we really to believe that at a certain time in history the whole earth was flooded and that one man, Noah, had the foresight to build a boat on which he had placed a male and female of every living species on earth so as to save them from extinction? Clearly the story is not to be taken literally, as a concrete event in the history of this planet. Like a number of other biblical stories of the origins of history, it is not an historical videotape of what happened but is rather a story of the human heart, a story which is truer than true in that it happens again and again inside of our lives. And how does it happen? What is the meaning of the story of Noah and the Ark? The story might be recast this way: Every so often there comes a time in history when there is so little vision, faith, idealism, decency, and charity left on this planet that there is a real danger that the world itself will sink, drown, and revert to a chaos that will kill everything that s precious. But one person, despite all that is going on around him or her, will keep his or her eyes on what s higher, keep faith intact, protect life, and refuse to compromise charity and decency. Eventually the earth will drown in chaos, but because of this one person s vision, idealism, faith, decency and charity, a pocket of life, that still contains all that is precious, will be preserved and given a new chance to grow. Noah s Ark is a boat of faith, vision, idealism, decency, and charity. These virtues give us the capacity to float above the chaos that drowns things. Moreover, our decency, charity, faith, and vision contain within themselves all that s precious and that needs to be protected and given a continued chance for life. And there are different ways to build this ark. Here s one: Daniel Berrigan is fond of issuing this warning: Beware, beware, or the culture will swallow you whole! It s easy to be swallowed whole and drowned by our culture. It is that kind of a narcotic. Recognizing this, at a point in his life, Daniel Berrigan chose to work full-time in a hospice for the dying. His motives were mixed: On the one hand, he sincerely wanted to help dying patients in any way he could, physically and spiritually. On the other hand, he wanted to work with the dying because he recognized that they, the dying, precisely because they no longer have a meaningful place inside the culture and the future, could give him a privileged perspective on our culture and on our world. Simply put: When you see your culture and your world through the eyes of someone who is dying, things take on a very different perspective and a lot of what fires ordinary life (tiring our bodies, minds, and heart in its pursuit) is now exposed as secondary and as not worthy of all the attention and energy it is given. For Daniel Berrigan, building an ark meant attending to the dying so as to be given the faith and perspective to not drown in our culture. And so we might paraphrase Rudyard Kipling this way: If you can keep your faith when all about you they are losing theirs, but are comfortable in the feeling that there is strength in numbers, that everyone else is following suit, that so many million people can t be wrong; If you can keep giving others respect when all about you this is seen as weakness, and disrespect is held as strength and passion for truth; If you can remain courteous and retain your manners when all about you courtesy is seen as quaint, and crassness and crudity are paraded as sophistication; If you can live in tension when all about you there is compromise because it is judged that it is better to let the devil take tomorrow than to live in tension today; If you can refuse to settle for second-best when all about you it is accepted that this is all that life will offer; If you can combine chastity and passion when all about you this is judged as naïve and impossible; If you can make room for Sabbath amidst the pressures of life when all about you those pressures have begun to dictate all of life; And, if you can bear down even more in charity and forgiveness, loving and forgiving those who hate you, when all about you they are advocating hate for hate; Then, just as surely as Noah, you will have built an Ark!

5 Second Sunday of Ordinary Time January 18, Bulletin Building Blocks - 2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Old customs fade slowly, and in 1560 the Council of Trent tried for significant change in pastoral care of the sick. People resisted, thinking that the last breath was the right time for the sacrament. Although physical improvement was often noted after anointing, it was seen as a kind of bonus, rather than an expected outcome of a prayer for good health, strength, patience, and even healing. More than four hundred years later, many people still do not ask for anointing until it is literally too late for the person to have reasonable hope of healing, or at least be aware enough to participate in the ritual. By then, it may even be too late for viaticum, the true last rite. We have a treasure in our tradition that we seem reluctant to use. We visit the sick, we anoint those who are in the first crisis of illness, we give Communion to those who are dying, and we keep vigil and pray for those close to death. When anointing is celebrated early enough, optimally when the sick person is still at Sunday Mass, it can be a source of courage, faith, and hope for a difficult road ahead. When we anoint our sick, we remind them that they belong to Christ and a community of faith. We bring them into the presence of Christ to reconcile, heal, and give strength and hope. We resist forces that isolate and alienate the sick; the symbol of touch is a powerful act of acceptance. Why wait until the crisis of illness is dire before we apply such a rich remedy to body and soul? Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. SAT. 5 pm Sun. 10:00 am Presider Fr Bob Heinz Fr. McQuaid to Speak at OLB Our Lady of the Brook will welcome Father Tom McQuaid next weekend at the 10:00 am Mass. He will preside at Mass, and then offer a brief presentation afterwards in the Social Area. His presentation with us will focus on baptismal responsibility to mission. Fr. Tom McQuaid is a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago. He has served here as a pastoral associate and pastor; Vocation Director; and on the faculty of Mundelein Seminary. He has also served for 7 years with Maryknoll, ministering in Northeast Kenya. Presently, he works for Catholic Relief Services in their Midwest office here in Chicago, working with dioceses and Catholic colleges/universities in the Midwest to encourage greater global awareness and solidarity. We hope you can join us to hear what he has to say! Paddy was driving down the street in a sweat because he had an important meeting and couldn't find a parking place. Looking up to heaven he said, 'Lord take pity on me. If you find me a parking place I will go to Mass every Sunday for the rest of me life and give up me Irish Whiskey!' Miraculously, a parking place appeared. Paddy looked up again and said, 'Never mind, I found one.'

6 Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 6 ADULT FAITH FORMATION To grow in discipleship throughout life, all believers need and are called to build a vibrant parish and diocesan communities if faith and service. Such communities cannot exist without a strong, complete, and systematic catechesis for all its members. By complete and systematic we mean a catechesis that nurtures a profound, lifelong conversion of the whole person and sets forth a comprehensive, contemporary synthesis of the faith (Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us, the Bishops pastoral plan for adult faith formation) Adult faith formation is as diverse as retreats, days of reflection, sacramental preparation (baptism, confirmation, and marriage), ministerial formation, our parish mission, and our speaker series, as well as on-going scripture and catechetical study. Winter Ordinary Time Our Sunday Scripture reflection Who Do You Say that I Am? led by Dcn Dennis McAllister will continue on the first and second Sundays of each month at a new time and place beginning January 4, 2015 after the 10:00AM Mass at 11:30PM in the Library of the religious education wing. Our adult faith formation offering is Fr. Robert Barron s Untold Blessings: Three Paths to Holiness. Sessions are on Thursdays, at 9:15AM and again at 7:00PM in the Mother Cabrini Room for seven weeks. Registration forms are on the wall racks and on our website. Our Greatest Gifts Speakers Series continues to evolve so that as speakers are lined up, we will announce their dates and topics. We hope you will enjoy the diversity of this year s offerings and will avail yourself of the opportunity as time and circumstances permit to attend one or more of our adult faith formation offerings. Dcn Peery DON'T FORGET! The cart in the back of church for food and household items for the poor has been pretty empty lately. Let's not forget that the poor need to eat and have household supplies year round not just occasionally. You can bring one item every week - that's pretty easy. It's the remembering that's hard. Remember; WE ARE ALL ONE BODY, ONE HEART, ONE LOVE. Fishing For Cash Fishing For Cash winners are: $100 M.L. Haberkorn and Lorraine Santaella $300 Martin Stahura Congratulations! Adding Names to the Parish Sick List It has always been the policy of Our Lady of the Brook Parish to offer you an opportunity to pray for those parishioners who are ill and in need of our prayers. However, we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill - but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our parish are entitled to their privacy in this regard. So, names for the sick list spoken at Mass and placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family and permission has to be given in order to publicize the name. We will announce the name at Mass for three weeks. After that, the name will be placed on the bulletin sick list. Names on the bulletin sick list can remain there as long as the person is ill. Please inform the parish of any changes in the person s health. 8 Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 8 Joint Parish Council and Finance Committee Meeting December 30, 2014 Father Bob began the meeting with a prayer. Those present included: Fr. Bob, Bob Alt, Wayne Bubak, Bill Hass, Sandy Koziol, Jim Kritek, Mary Ellen Lovell, Michael Nees, Kathy O Regan, Dee Phillips, Eva Rill, Don Roalkvam, and Phil Verplancke. The purpose of the meeting was to look to the future and focus on Evangelization and Marketing. Father Bob asked the question, What are we Marketing? What is our Message? The consensus was that our Message is the Good News in the Catholic Church and in Our Parish. Ideas focused on how to spread the message through our liturgies, outreach to the community, outside speakers and hopefully through some strong marketing. The question arose to whom we are marketing? We need to market to those attending, and to those passing by or in the neighborhood. Sandy brought up that the Women s Club will be hearing a presentation about the possibility of providing space for the SPRED (Special Religious Education Program). This might potentially bring in families from surrounding parishes. In-Church suggestions for marketing included a booth to advertise our various programs, our current website, perhaps announcements in Mass focusing on someone you should know in our Parish, and our current mailing list. No consensus was reached on any of the ideas. As far as reaching out to the community, we are tentatively exploring the options for improving our signage on Dundee Road. There are village restrictions that we must comply with, as well as financial considerations. Wayne pointed out that we remain hopeful in the face of these challenges as our attendance seems to be growing and more people seem to be coming back to our Parish. The meeting concluded on a positive note with refreshments provided by Eva. The Premise Alert Program allows people to notify police and fire departments about a family member who may require special assistance or treatment in an emergency at home. That could be a lifesaver for people who have autism, Alzheimer s, are blind, or paralyzed. Operators at 911 call centers will have access to the information and will share it with police, firefighters, and paramedics who respond to an emergency. Northbrook has the computer-aided dispatch technology necessary to make use of this program. The Parish Office has forms that may be used to enroll in the program. Return them to the Northbrook Police Dept. Or visit premisealert
