3 5th Sunday of Ordinary Time February 9, The adage says, Man proposes, God disposes. And I have often mentioned in homilies that, while there is no intrinsic reason why our plans and God s plan have to be at odds, it often enough works out that way. So Two weeks ago I announced my retirement effective on the 1 st of July. The next day I received the news that a prostate biopsy I had undergone came back positive. I have cancer of the prostate and it will have to be dealt with. The diagnosis was not a surprise; both my brothers have dealt with the disease and are survivors. I will be consulting with the doctors to develop a course of treatment and I ll be working with Fr. Kalas, our vicar, to arrange for parish staffing if surgery is decided upon. The Parish Transformation Process needs to go on and takes on a new perspective. A general parish meeting will be held this Wednesday at 7:00pm.. I will certainly be on the parish prayer list and now you know why. Please keep me in your own prayers. Oh, I m still looking forward to retirement sometimes God s plan do agree with man s. PARISH TRANSFORMATION /TOWN HALL MEETING FEB. 12 Parish Transformation celebrates the gift of our parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago by making our parishes stronger and more effective in fulfilling the mission that Jesus has entrusted to his Church. In Part I of Parish Transformation parish leadership is given the opportunity to identify their strengths or pearls of great price that give the parish its distinctive character and definition. The design of Parish Transformation is also intended to identify those areas in parish life and ministry that may be weak or ripe for new development. A self-assessment tool is provided which outlines Parish Foundations and Building Blocks which provide the focus for parish leadership s discussion and planning. The goal of the process is to enable the parish to articulate its mission and vision and provide a concrete strategy for revitalizing the parish for the future. Part II of Parish Transformation focuses on the financial and material aspects of parish life through a benchmarking process. The mission and vision of a parish give shape and direction to how a parish uses its resources. The benchmarking process helps a parish to establish a strong (Continued on page 5) Spiritual Life Commission The Spiritual Life Commission is entrusted with the responsibility of working with the pastoral staff and the Liturgy Committee in planning, fostering, and promoting liturgical and spiritual growth and development. We are looking for men and women to participate in future planning and evaluation of various spiritual life activities fro the parish. 5 5th Sunday of Ordinary Time February 9, Bulletin Building Blocks - 5th Sunday of Ordinary Time TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION You need more than water for a bath. Most family bathrooms contain an arsenal of soaps and emollients, lotions, shampoos, and conditioners to combat grime and honor the body. A bath without oil is still unthinkable. No wonder early Christians used lavish amounts of oil to paint the skin of people drawn dripping wet from the baptismal font on Easter. There were two oils used in baptism long ago. Oil of exorcism protected candidates from evil spirits ; it strengthened their resolve and purified their purposes. The second oil, slathered over them after baptism s bath, sealed them, making them like Christ, the anointed one, the priest, the prophet, the king. Chrism has always had a powerful odor; rich resinous perfumes are stirred in before it is consecrated. As the newly baptized were embraced by new brothers and sisters in Christ, the scent permeated the hall of Eucharist, a sign of our connection to Christ and to one another. Rev. Helpful tools are provided by which a parish reviews in detail its financial and material resources, personnel, budget, facilities, etc. in light of what we have learned to be best practices in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Issues surrounding personnel, schools, and facilities are addressed in view of strategizing for the future wellbeing of the parish. Throughout the Parish Transformation process parish leadership is given the aid of a facilitator so that the pastor and his designated parish leadership will have the support and assistance they need to successfully journey through the process. The ultimate goal of the Parish Transformation process is to learn new ways of looking at parish life, to adopt new pastoral and fiscal practices where it is advantageous, and to initiate an ongoing review and refinement of the mission and vision of the parish at regular intervals. Please plan on attending an initial parish meeting on Wednesday, 2/12 at 7:00PM.

Find ways to learn and grow in understanding of our history and the teachings of the Church. Participate in adult formation in your parish and share all that you learn with others (Catholics Come Home Chicago) Winter Ordinary Time (January February) Our Sunday Scripture reflection Who Do You Say that I Am? led by Dcn Dennis McAllister will continue on the first and second Sundays of the month in the rectory conference room following the 9:30 Mass. We are offering an interfaith study of the Book of Esther from the Old Testament with Shir Hadash at their new synagogue located in Wheeling at 200 Dundee Rd. across from St. Joseph the Worker. These sessions will be led by Rabbi Eitan and Dcn Peery on Tuesday mornings at 9:30AM for an hour or so (a change from our regular Thursday day and time). Sessions are on the Tuesdays of February. Registration forms are available in the racks at the entrances to the church and on our website. Please feel free to attend even if you missed the January sessions. Adult Confirmation Preparation We will be hosting a nine week sequence of sessions beginning February 4 to prepare adults who have not been confirmed to receive the Sacrament on Monday, May 5, at Holy Name Cathedral. The sessions will meet at 7:00PM at the in the rectory for an hour-and-a-half. Contact us at adultconfirmation@olbparish.org. Lent-Easter Season It s not too soon to say our parish Silent Retreat out at Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House is scheduled for April (Palm Sunday weekend). This weekend will be a mixed group of men and with women, but this does not mean it has to be a couples retreat. There are other weekend options available, if the Palm Sunday weekend does not work for you: Mar Men s Retreat, Mar Men s Retreat, Apr 3-6 Men & Women Retreat 4-Day, Apr Men/Women Retreat, Apr Couples Retreat, May 2-4 Women s Retreat. As last year [1] this weekend will be a mixed group with women invited as well, but those attending need not be couples, [2] NO group allocations, and [3] a registration fee of $70.00 to make a reservation. What does this all mean? If you plan to attend you must take the initiative to reserve a space for yourself. Dcn Peery Attention High School Senior Girls: ACCW $4000 Scholarship Contest The Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) is offering a $4000 renewable scholarship to any senior high school age young lady who maintains a C grade point average. In order to qualify, the senior must write an essay entitled What is Means to be a Catholic Woman in the World Today. The essay should be 300 words or less, typed and double spaced on 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper. Submit two letters of recommendation, one letter each from your school Counselor, Pastor, Youth Minister or non-family member. This scholarship is to be awarded in the summer of This is a four-year renewable scholarship. The scholarship will be terminated if the awardee leaves college /university before the completion of four years. 7 5th Sunday of Ordinary Time February 9, Religious Education & Youth Ministry Children s Liturgy of the Word Children s Liturgy of the Word is offered at the 9:30 AM Mass through June. This program is for children age 3 through grade 5. Liturgy of the Word for Children is an opportunity for families to attend Mass together, with children dismissed during the Liturgy of the Word to experience and learn about the readings with a community of other young people. RELIGIOUS ED NEWS Save the Date for Religious Ed Donut Sunday. Please plan to join us Sunday, March 2 nd after the 9:30am mass. The 5 th grade demonstration mass will be held for all 5 th graders and their parents tomorrow, Monday, February 10th at 4:30pm in church. Fr. Peter will explain the meaning and historical significance of the prayers, words and actions of the mass. The 5 th graders from all the RE sessions should attend on Monday, February 10th. 4 TH Grade RECONCILIATION There will be Reconciliation for all 4 th grade families on either Tuesday, February 18 th at 7:00pm or Saturday, February, 22 nd at 9:30am. Families were invited via asking for their choice of date to attend. Each service will be followed by a reception. Please respond to the if you have not yet done so. This is a special celebration for students and their parents and we encourage all families to participate. FOSTERING of FAITH presented by CHUCK THOMPSON A Fostering of Faith presentation on Morality will be held here at St. Norbert in February. This class is part of the certification process for catechists but is also open to all interested St. Norbert parishioners for a nominal fee of $ These informative and engaging sessions begin Tuesday, February 11, and continue on February 18 and 25. Class begins at 6:00pm and finish around 9:30pm. The presenter is Chuck Thompson, who has conducted several FF sessions here at St. Norbert and is a highly regarded and requested presenter. He will use Les Miserables as a vehicle for a portion of his presentation. It is recommended that you attend all three sessions. Catechists need to attend all three to attain certification credit. Members of the groups above are asked to call Cathy as well ARCHDIOCESAN ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL You are the temple of God (1 Corinthians 3:16) Many of you have responded to the Annual Catholic Appeal mailing from Cardinal George. On behalf of those served by the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we thank you for your gifts. If you received the mailing and have not responded, please do so as soon as possible. In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the Archdiocese, the Appeal also funds services that are of great help to ministries here in our parish. This year, the theme of the Appeal is: You are the temple of God. In his first letter to the Corinthians Paul instructs that each of us is a temple of God. God lives within us and He asks us to share our gifts with others. As we contemplate His gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of our parish, our Archdiocese and the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. Please give generously to the 2014 Annual Catholic Appeal. When our parish reaches its goal of $23,890 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our parish.
