3 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time October 25, It has been a while since I have given you a health update so I thought I would do that this week. Let me start with St. Norbert s Fr. Mueller. Fr. Mueller has been at Brandel Nursing Facility here in Northbrook for several weeks now. It is on Pfingsten Road just south of Techny. He is generally happy and in good spirits. This past June Fr. Mueller was diagnosed as having 3 tumors in his brain and they determined that it was Lymphoma. After the diagnosis it was determined he should have chemotherapy in an attempt to shrink the tumors. He had 3 treatments over several weeks and it was difficult on his body. After the third treatment they decided that was enough for now. The chemo seemed to be working on the tumors but it was also being very difficult on his organs. Scans and x- rays have shown that the tumors have shrunk considerably so he has not had more chemo treatment at this time but they have not ruled it out for the future. The people at Brandel tell us that Father has many visitors coming to see him. We think that is a good thing for him and for those who get a chance to see him. We encourage short visits (15-30 minutes) because he tires pretty easily. There are also times he may not be in his room because of different therapies he is taking part in. If you do get a chance to stop by be aware that he has limited energy. Something else you should be aware of is that his memory is not what it used to be. There are moments when he is very aware of most everything that is going on, and other moments when he is a little confused. He will not be winning any debates in the near future. When I have visited with him there have been times he has been very present to the conversation and other times not so much. All in all he is doing quite well and most importantly he is happy. He likes where he is, he likes the food (he has a very particular palate), and he likes the staff. Please keep him in your prayers and if you are moved stop by and see him. I feel very good. Since being diagnosed with Metastatic Melanoma on May 19, 2015, I have had 2 surgeries and 1 Gamma Knife treatment and that s it! Recovering from the surgeries took a couple of months and to be perfectly honest I have been warned to not get back to one hundred percent work load. The balance of accomplishing this recommendation is a challenge. The Doctors have told me to listen to my body (good advice for all of us!) and do what my body allows. So I am exercising with some regularity, trying to keep up with work and going to bed early most nights. My favorite time of day is still the morning when I can spend time in prayer. Early in the morning I am still very drawn to my prayer rituals and nourished by them. It is a grace that God has given me that I hope never to take for granted. My present pattern of doctoring is every six weeks I get an MRI and a CT scan. My last scans October 16 and on October 19 I met with the Doctor to get the most recent report. They saw some changes in both the brain and the lungs since the last scans some two months ago. With those changes they have decided the best thing to do is to start Immunotherapy within the next two weeks. I am not knowledgeable enough to explain what this means scientifically. So in my own words; Immunotherapy strengthens the Immune System so it attacks the cancerous cells. I have known this could be a possible treatment someday and now the day has come. There can be many side effects with this therapy and some people have them and some do not. I hope I am one of the latter. I will try to keep you informed about my progress and how I am feeling. I can t thank you enough for ALL your prayers! I have received s, cards, notes, prayer cards etc, from so many of you and I am so humbled by the outpouring I have received. All of this has helped me tremendously! May God bless you abundantly!!

We will announce the name at Mass for three weeks. After that, the name will be placed on the bulletin sick list. Names on the bulletin sick list can remain there as long as the person is ill. Please inform the parish of any changes in the person s health. Those wishing to receive a Communion Visit should call the parish office and request it. 5 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time October 25, Bulletin Building Blocks - 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the tangled but fascinating history of penance in the Church, the Irish tariff system helped us survive the collapse of the old system of public canonical penance and prepared the way for a new system that emerged in the twelfth century. The old form was unrepeatable, public, dealt with serious community matters, and regulated by the bishops as chief reconcilers. The new form had a more intimate setting of penitent and confessor, was extremely repeatable, and applied to everyone. The old canonical form was closed to children, who were hardly capable of the very grown up sins listed, or their demanding remedies. The old form was likewise closed to clerics, who were protected in a sense by the very nature of the discipline. In the new Irish form the penitent directly named sins, or answered direct questions by the priest. Sometimes, the penitent would recite a long formula accusing him- or herself in a general way of all sorts of sins, even from the distant past. Next, priest and penitent together would lie prostrate before the altar and recite several of the psalms with penitential themes. Finally, the priest would pronounce a judgment, deciding what form and duration the penance should take, normally insisting that the person return for reconciliation once the penances were completed. 8 Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 8 Hand-Carved Olive Wood Gifts from the Holy Land Proceeds benefit Catholic schools in the Holy Land. There are more than 600 Christian families living in Bethlehem and are completely dependent on carving olive wood figurines for their livelihood. The recent clashes in the Middle East have stopped the tourism industry in Bethlehem, causing most of those families serious harm in earning their living and forcing many of them to leave their homeland. Emptying the land of Christ from Christians can have tragic consequences on the Holy sites. Issam from Star of Bethlehem Group came to the United States with a mission to help those families by selling their beautiful religious hand crafts. The cost of goods goes to benefit the Christian carvers to keep them working in the spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, the profit from sales goes directly to the needy Catholic schools and clinics in the Holy Land. Star of Bethlehem has been approved by Archdiocese of Chicago, many bishops, and from diocese of Jerusalem. Please take a look at these beautiful articles on October 31 & November 1. A Wonderful Pilgrimage on Columbus Day!! On a beautiful day Knights of Columbus 7331 hosted a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Good Help, which is the only place in the US, according to the church, where Mary has appeared. On a beautiful day parishioners from St. Philip, St. Norbert and Our Lady of the Brook prayed the rosary, attended mass, had lunch together and the staff gave us the history of the shrine. We then went to Relevant Radio and prayed live with Drew Mariani after a brief tour. Drew explained some of the miracles he saw just the day before at the shrine. I think we all agree we would do this again! Shelter Needs The Women's Shelter is constantly changing with families moving in and out. When they come, they have nothing. When they leave they are equipped with a resource to reach out to for help, counseling, basic needs and ideally an apartment. When setting up their homes the shelter appreciates sending them off with basic cleaning, hygiene and laundry products. Your help is always appreciated! Drop offs can be left under the North Coat racks. Thanks to all who remember the shelter weekly! Sign Up to Touch the Stanley Cup! The CUP will be at St. Norbert Gym on Thursday, Oct. 29 from 6 to 10 pm. For tickets go to the St Norbert Parish office. Tickets are $20 per person, which is earmarked for charity. You can have your photo taken, then download the file and print it out for all your friends! THERE ARE ONLY A FEW SPOTS LEFT an blast was sent last week to parishioners.
