3 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time September 6, Last October when Fr. Anand arrived from India I mentioned that he should set about getting a driver s license. Well, winter set in and that s no time to learn how to drive in this area, so the process was delayed until spring. Now, at long last, he has the permission of the State of Illinois to be on the road. There is, however, a small problem. He doesn t have a car. The parish car is supposed to be used for parish business, not personal use for insurance and so forth. So, if anyone among our parishioners is looking to sell a small, inexpensive used car, you might want to think of Fr. Anand. Or, if you want to donate the car to the parish and take the tax break; I think the parish can then sell the car to him Fr. Anand gets the car, you get the tax break, and OLB gets the purchase price (that seems too good to work, so I ll have to check with a tax person). A few months ago we noticed that the acoustic tiles in the main entrances of the worship center were falling becoming brittle after all these years. When we were pricing the replacement it was suggested that the lights in the entrances should also be replaced; the wiring was old and the lighting quality was poor. So, there are new tiles (actually panels) and new lights in the entrance ways. The new lighting will be more evident when we revert to standard time. Funds for this were taken from what remained of the millennium fund. We are about to update our sound system. It s not a complete replacement, but new speakers and some of the electronics (way beyond me) are supposed to be in place this week. I forgot, however, to include the clause, Time is of the essence on this contract, into the contract, so the timing is iffy. Shir Haddash asked that if the work isn t done by the High Holy Days (still a couple of weeks away) that it be postponed until after the observances. This seems reasonable. So the quality of our sound system should improve soon. This is being paid for by a grant. Plug for the Farmers Market: In general I like spicy food and so I like to have a hot sauce on the table. The tradition brands, for the most part, just don t do it. And as I have had priests from India living with me for the past nine or ten years, I have tasted a whole lot of hot sauces. A couple of vendors at our Farmers Market stock a variety of sauces, and I ve found one that is just about as spicy as you would ever want to have on your table. (There are some that are meant for use while cooking. You really wouldn t want them on the table trust me.) Anyway, if you think you would like a really hot, hot sauce, you might want to try Grace Scotch Bonnet Sauce. Fr. Anand tried it and said it was hot even by Indian standards (it comes from Jamaica) and he didn t think they would make it for American tastes. Now, there s a recommendation. Some our Snow Birds are already talking about making their yearly trek south or southwest. This, then, is a good time to remind everyone (especially our Snow Birds) to switch over to automatic, or electronic, deductions from your bank account. This helps to continue your support for OLB even while you re enjoying the coastal or desert warmth while we who stay in the north suffer through the wind, sleet, snow and hail of a Chicago winter a description meant to tug at your heart and bring a tear to your eye. So, switch over now before you head out for the winter. Peace, now and always,

Each year the Church offers those adults who have not been confirmed an opportunity to do so with their fellow adults at a special celebration of the Sacrament following a two-month, once-a-week (7 sessions) period of preparation. We have been asked to be a host parish site for Vicariate II, along with St. Clement, for these preparation sessions. Confirmation will be celebrated at St. Clement (642 W. Deming Place, in Chicago) on November 5. A Night of Reflection with Bishop Kane, which will include the Sacrament of Reconciliation, is scheduled on Tuesday, October 27 at 7pm at St. Clement followed by a practice for the Confirmation immediately afterwards. It is our understanding in talking to Bishop Kane that all those being confirmed (from the multiple formation sites) are to take part in this evening. If you have not been confirmed, here is the perfect opportunity. Please us at adultconfirmation@olbparish.org with your name, address, telephone number and e- mail address. Sessions will begin 9/9 and run through 10/21 from 7:00PM to 8:30PM in the Mother Cabrini Room.
6 Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 6 Adult Faith Formation Our joint venture sponsored by Shir Hadash Reconstructionist Synagogue entitled "Voices in Stone: Recovering Jewish History from Ancient Inscriptions" was an outstanding success with 60 folks in attendance not only from the synagogue, but also The Brook as well as other area churches and synagogues. We are looking forward to other joint ventures that will reach out to the larger faith community. Our Fall AFF offering with our pastor Fr. Tom The Birth of Monotheism begins this Thursday at 9:15 and repeat again in the evening at 7:00PM. This will be a conversation based on the reading of a book of the same title by Andre Lemaire published by the Biblical Archaeological Society. This year we will be doing something different and changing our Gospel focus from the Fall to the period of short Ordinary Time, January and February, We will be looking at the parables of Luke this year using Fr. John R. Donohue, SJ, book The Gospel in Parable. Because he treats the parables in all three synoptic Gospels we will be able to use this book for three years studying the parables of Matthew and then Mark successively. By moving our Gospel study into Ordinary Time, we are getting closer to the period in which we are actually reading the Gospel. Also, this year it will provide a bit on an entre to our guest Mission presenter. We are planning another joint venture with St. Norbert s and have retained Fr. Denis McBride, CssR, a Lucan scholar. He was one of Fr. Tom s directors (Continued on page 7) Moving to Higher Ground Spiritual & Musical Revival Sunday, Sept. 13 5:30 to 7:30 pm Northbrook United Methodist Church will be the site of this musical event. If you have any questions please call either parish s religious education office. We welcome all our students new and old, and the new families who have joined us from Our Lady of the Brook parish. We look forward to a rewarding and successful year! Our Lady of the Brook Faith Formation Office: St. Norbert s Religious Education Office: when he was on sabbatical in England at Hawkstone Hall. Having studied the Sunday Scriptures for the Lenten and Easter Sundays over the past three years, we are considering beginning a three-year study of The United States Catholic Catechism for Adults as recommended by the Bishops in their Pastoral -- Our Hearts were Burning Within Us. In which they called for a strong, complete, and systematic catechesis that nurtures a profound, lifelong conversion of the whole person and sets forth a comprehensive, contemporary synthesis of the faith as presented in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. We have also set dates for two Days of Reflection for the women of our parish: November 14 and April 10 both to be held at Techny with guest speakers Bridget Sperduto and Sr. Mary Ruth Broz respectively, who were nominated by our planning committee. The sessions will run from 9:00AM to 4:00PM including a lunch. The parish has already underwritten the cost of the reservation. We have extended an invitation to St. Norbert s to join us in this venture. While this is a different format from that of the men s silent retreat at Bellarmine, it is considered to be a starting point they may lead to a future weekend retreat. The forthcoming Women s Club mailing will provide more information and an opportunity to register. We have also been invited to be one of the two host parishes for our Vicariate s adult Confirmation program. We will be hosting these on Wednesday evenings at 7:00PM in September and October. Bishop Kane will be celebrant of the sacrament on Nov. 5, 2009 at St. Clement's in Chicago. See the special invitation in today s bulletin. The first session is scheduled to begin September 9. We will again be hosting Shir Hadash Reconstructionist Synagogue for the High Holidays: Rosh Hashanah, 9/18-19, and Yom Kippur, 9/ Our own Jessica Koch has been retained as choir director for this year s services. We look forward to offering the opportunity for our own parishioners to attend as was done last year so as to have a chance to experience something of our roots in Judaism. Please see the Bulletin insert.
