3 Easter Sunday April 5, Heinz site... Alleluia, Alleluia!! The Lord is risen and we are saved from eternal darkness! This is the greatest Feast of our year! Is this something that we are just remembering that happened a long time ago? What does it matter to me today that Jesus rose from the dead? Some people have these and other questions and because of that cannot fully enter into the Rejoice and Alleluia atmosphere that so many Christians feel on this Feast annually. What does it matter? It matters because it means that God through Jesus has conquered death. While we are born into this world for a little while, we are to live with God forever. Jesus death and Resurrection have brought down the barriers that kept us from being with God eternally. That is good and hopeful news. It means that we will one day be together with all of Gods people so we can give glory and honor to God for all God has done for us. This is a gift that is being offered to us right now. Eternal life is being offered to us right now through Jesus. The Gospel tells us over and over that Jesus is the Resurrection and the life and whoever believes in him has that life. Pope Francis tells us in his book, The Joy of the Gospel, Those who accept Jesus offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness. This is what this Feast means! It means we are free! It means that while in our or others minds we may never measure up in this life. In Gods life we do matter and we do count. We count so much that God sent his only son to suffer, die and rise from the dead for us, so that we would know that we count, we matter and that we will live with Him forever. This is really great news! This is true freedom that Jesus offers us. We need to accept this freedom, this gift of salvation so we can be part of sharing it. Receiving this gift of salvation is one of the great roadblocks to our Rejoicing and Alleluia s. Somehow we think we have not earned this gift and we think we can. We can never earn or deserve this gift. It is unadulterated and unmeasured love of God that offered and is offering this gift to us. We simply need to be humble and say yes! To truly appreciate this amazing gift and live in the freedom of God s love we have to give our lives to God. We need to acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord of our lives and that we are His followers/ disciples. When we can give ourselves to this right ordering then we know we are not alone and that we will never be alone. We will know that the one who died for us and rose from the dead is with us now and forever. Alleluia! Alleluia! Happy Easter!! Live the Faith, Share the Faith, Renew the World! 5 Easter Sunday April 5, Bulletin Building Blocks - Easter Sunday TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Our tradition has a way of honoring age-old customs, and is patient with how practices unfold in different places. The name of today s feast illustrates this well. English is a Germanic language, and our word Easter, or German Oester, points back to the pagan goddess Eoestre, the star of the vernal equinox feast. The Greek title Pasch reaches back in a more helpful manner to the Hebrew Pesach, or Passover. Paschal Triduum may be slow to replace Easter in our vocabulary, but it is clearer about the mystery we celebrate today, the culmination of three days laden with mystery and meaning. You can hear the older term, and the resistance to English influence, in the Irish Casca and Scottish Pask. Romance languages stay close to the deep paschal tradition, with the French Pâques, Spanish Pascua and Italian Pasqua. Memories of our pagan past with Oester will not soon fade away: even Japanese Christians are under her spell, for today s feast is called I-suta. Swahili, a young language, takes the more traditional route with Pasaka. Each language yields a rich insight into the feast. Spanish includes a sense that today is a big Sunday by adding the designation Pascua to the greatest feasts, such as Pascua de la Natividad (Christmas). 6 Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 6 ADULT FAITH FORMATION Baptism In July of 2011 the Archdiocese inaugurated the Strategic Pastoral Plan to grow the Catholic community of faith in each parish over the next five years and to more deeply incorporate the faithful in the life of the church throughout the course of their lives. This included the Parish Transformation Process and now the Year of the Sacraments. Through the Easter Season we will offer a reprise on the Seven Sacraments each Sunday in the context of adult faith formation. Obviously, just like children, as adults our lives go through various stages and phases. We are not all at the same place at the same time. One size does not fit all, so where to begin? The order of the sacraments themselves probably suggests the best place.so let s begin with Baptism. For adults, our experience of Baptism can come in a variety of ways. We perhaps have seen pictures as we were preparing for other sacraments, or just thumbing through a family picture album. Other times we ve been invited to attend a baptism, or perhaps even to be a godparent. But for the majority of us the most up front and personal experience is the baptism of our own children. The church invites us this time to prepare for what we are undertaking. One might well ask: what do you mean by we? It s the baby that s getting baptized. In order to answer that question, I like to turn to the rituals themselves to help us understand our roles. The third, of four opening questions of the Baptismal Ritual, is: You have asked to have your child baptized. In doing so you are accepting the responsibility of training them in the practice of the faith. It will be your duty to bring them up to keep God s commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our neighbor. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking? So that parents can answer that question both honestly and with some confidence, the National Directory for Catechesis issued by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) states: Preparation for the Baptism of their children is also an important opportunity to evangelize young adults and draw then closer to Christ and the Church. Effective baptismal preparation Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass The Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday, August 30, 2015 at 2:45 pm, at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 North State Street in Chicago. Couples married in 1965 interested in attending this celebration should contact the parish office to register. Detergent, cleaning products, bleach and hygiene products are always welcome and can be dropped off under the coat racks at the North Entrance to the church. programs offer parents a chance to continue their formation in the Catholic faith and ordinarily include a more developed catechesis on the Sacrament of Baptism and on the Church s teachings on marriage and family life. Here at OLB we have baptism prep program arranged with parents. The session lasts about an hour and a video is used to facilitate the conversation. Once this session has been attended, parents may proceed with the Baptism. However, it doesn t end here; this is just the beginning.there are all those other sacraments, and more adult faith formation. Dcn Peery Attention Gluten-free hosts are now available for those who medically require them. Hosts are in a container in the back of the Assembly Area (on the small table, down the steps from the font). If you require a gluten-free host, take one from the container, and place it in the pyx (small metal container). Then put the pyx in the SILVER BOWL. To receive your host, go to the celebrant/priest for that Mass. He will hand you the entire pyx, and you remove the host yourself. RETURN the pyx to the priest after you take the host out. Be sure to use the Gluten Free pyx, as there may also be containers for Ministers of Care, who visit the homebound.

7 Easter Sunday April 5, Religious Education & Youth Ministry Children s Liturgy of the Word Children s Liturgy of the Word is offered at the 10:00 AM Mass through June. This program is for children age 3 through grade 5. Liturgy of the Word for Children is an opportunity for families to attend Mass together, with children dismissed during the Liturgy of the Word to experience and learn about the readings with a community of other young people. Senior Club Trip to Chicago Churches All seniors are invited to a Chicago Church Tour with the Senior Club of St Norbert on Monday, May 18. Cost is just $45, and includes bus tour of Chicago churches. 8 Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 8 Father Michael Ahlstrom Talk: Finding my Purpose On Sunday, March 8, Father Michael Ahlstrom (retired Vicar of the Deacons and Priests) addressed a group of over 70 people in the social area after the 10am Liturgy. Father Ahlstrom began by talking about the difference between a vocation, a job and a purpose. He defined our purpose as what we are, part of our DNA, the core of our being, what motivates and energizes an individual. He sourced this definition from the bible: (Deuteronomy 30:14,.it is something very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts; you have only to carry it out. Our Lady of the Brook Women's Club sent 50 filled Easter Baskets to St. Martin's to share the joy of Easter with the children who might not have a basket. The baskets were filled with educational toys, sweets and Easter activities. All baskets and contents were donated by members of the Women's Club, which is always looking for new members. Contact a Women's Club member for more information and share your gifts with our parish and have fun in the process. Amelia Earhart Coming to Our Lady of the Brook OLB Women s Club will hold an Open Meeting on Thursday, April 9 at 7:00 pm. Leslee Goddard will present a living historical portrayal of Amelia Earhart. Her courageous exploits and spirited personality made her an international celebrity in the early 20th century. The cost is just $10, and includes appetizers, dessert and beverage. Please send payment and your name and phone number to the Parish Office, Attn: Women s Club no later than April 1. It is always easier to have advance notice for set up of our chairs, but last minute attendees are also welcome and can pay at the on the night of the event. This event is open to all women AND MEN of the parish, and all women and men of St Norbert parish. The question then becomes how do we define our purpose so we know if we are on or off target. Father attempted to explain it by citing three examples: The first was a friend of his who passed away from cancer. She was the middle child in a family of 7, and very outgoing. She recognized her purpose as caring. She was a nurse, but when she did not feel fulfilled completely, went on to become a food and nutrition counselor. She formed her own company and tried to help as many people to be healthy as possible. Her personal life and actions also reflected her caring nature. Father told how she would risk her own well-being to help others. He told a story about an airport incident where she risked missing her own flight to help someone, and an incident in a food pantry line where she risked her personal safely to aid an individual who was shot. The second example Father gave was about his own role as a priest. He was advised early in his ministry that administration (buildings, budgets and committees) were not his strength. His strength was people, he loved them and loved to help them. Thus, his role as vicar of the deacons was a wonderful fit for his pre -retirement years. Finally, he shared the story of a man who grew up protecting his family and friends on Taylor Street. The purpose he found was to help people survive and make it. He eventually got a degree in education, became a counselor, and now is an elected official in a small town with a mixed population helping the poor make the most of their lives. We all have a unique purpose, and many discover it in hindsight. When we are on purpose we are at peace with ourselves. Father then distributed three short exercises to help each person identify what his or her purpose in life is. As we proceed through this period of Lent it will be a joyous Easter season if we find why we were born. The good news in the Catholic Church is part of our transformation process. We hope to have more speakers in the months to come.
