3 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time October 5, CONCEIVING OF GOD METAPHOR AND REALITY - FR. RON ROLHEISER, OMI Today God is not so much denied as ignored, though there are growing numbers of people who now profess that they no longer believe in God. Those numbers however (to quote Bibby again) aren t nearly as high as is commonly supposed. Atheism is still relatively rare and, as Michael Buckley says, is not a problem, but a situation, an atmosphere, a confused history. Of more concern, are the ways we try to think of God. On the one hand, we see a creeping fundamentalism, where our concepts and language about God are being taken ever more literally. The bible is taken as a history book and the language surrounding God is taken at face value. On the other hand, we see a tendency to take the symbolic character of religious language to its extreme, namely, to a place where it excludes all claims to historicity and ontology (as having any reference to anything that actually exists in the real world). God then becomes just a symbol, a myth, not real in the normal sense. God is ineffable. God cannot be captured in any picture inside the imagination or concept within the mind and all our language about God is, by definition, necessarily metaphor, analogy, and is more inaccurate than accurate. God cannot be thought-of or spoken-about in the way we think about and speak about anything else. We must be wary of taking religious language too literally. When we turn analogy into univocity (metaphor into physics) we set ourselves up for the impossible task of trying to conceptualize the infinite within finite categories. That leads to atheism because when we try to literally picture God and imagine God s existence, the imagination runs dry and we easily conclude that, because God is unthinkable, God doesn t exist. But that isn t a necessary equation, knowing and thinking aren t the same thing. We know infinitely more than we can think. Don t forget that our bulletin is available online at our parish website. 5 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time October 5, Bulletin Building Blocks - 27th Sunday or Ordinary Time TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The sacrament of penance has a long and difficult history. The Church sometimes struggles with how best to be faithful to the image of an all-forgiving God. Once a very public rite with publicly visible participation on the part of the penitent, it became in time a very private matter. By the fourteenth century, when a prayer of absolution and a laying on of hands was still required in sacramental confession, theologians were saying that even that was too much liturgy. All that was required was confession itself, and the sacramental words Ego te absolvo, or I absolve you. In 1614 the Council of Florence tried to flesh out this bare skeleton, requiring that if possible the priest should wear a stole, that the confession should be in church, and that there be questions about the person s state in life, occupation, and last confession. This is the first time the Church recommended that the penitent and priest be separated by a grill, thereby eliminating the ritual laying on of hands once so central to the sacrament, substituting the priest s raised right hand in blessing. This is the rite that remained in force until the sacrament became the subject of very stormy debates at the Second Vatican Council, leading to a major reform in 1974 that is still only partially received. Find ways to learn and grow in understanding of our history and the teachings of the Church. Participate in adult formation in your parish and share all that you learn with others (Catholics Come Home Chicago) In their pastoral letter Our Hearts were Burning Within Us: A Pastoral Plan for Adult Faith Formation in the United States, the Bishops identified six dimensions for adult faith formation content: [1] knowledge of the faith, [2] liturgical life, [3] moral formation, [4] prayer, [5] communal life, and [6] missionary spirit. Adult faith formation is as diverse as retreats, days of reflection, sacramental preparation (baptism, confirmation, and marriage), ministerial formation, our parish mission, and our speaker series, as well as on-going scripture and catechetical study. This year Fall Ordinary Time In the Fall we are continuing our three year cycle of reflections on the Sunday gospels. We will be starting the Gospel of Mark in Advent this year. Sessions are on Thursdays, at 9:15AM in the MCR, and end before Thanksgiving. Registration forms are on the wall racks and on our website. Our Sunday Scripture reflection Who Do You Say that I Am? led by Dcn Dennis McAllister continues on the first and second Sundays of each month in the rectory conference room at 9:15AM followed by the 10:00AM Mass. Our Greatest Gifts Speakers Series continues to evolve so that as speakers are lined up, we will announce their dates and topics: On October 25, from 9:00 to Noon we will be hosting a Morning of Reflection for Ministers of Care with Fr. Mike Sparough as our speaker. On November 15, from 9:00 to Noon Nancy Hoel will return for our Women s Morning of Reflection to kick-off the Advent Season. Dcn Peery Worship Space Flowers October 4 & 5 The altar flowers this weekend are donated by the Kelly Family We are offering you the opportunity of donating weekend flowers for the altar. Many churches encourage parishioners to donate flowers in memory of a loved one or for a special occasion like an anniversary or birthday or for the honor and glory of God. If this is something you would be interested in, please call the rectory office at (847) and we will arrange to order flowers from a local florist. The donation is $75. We will publish in the bulletin the names of the donors and the occasion for which they are donated. Holly Fair at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Oct. 23 & 24, 2014 Holiday shopping event by the Women s Club at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Glenview. Held on Thursday and Friday, October 23 & 24, the Holly Fair will host over 50 vendors with unique and specialty gift items. Also featured are the Cookie Walk, Raffle and new Premium Raffle. Of course you ll want to stop by the Candy Cane Café where you can grab a bite to eat while you shop. Mark your calendar for the Holly Fair, a Glenview tradition. The event is held at the OLPH Playdium Gym located at 1776 Glenview Road in Glenview, Illinois.

7 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time October 5, Religious Education & Youth Ministry Children s Liturgy of the Word Children s Liturgy of the Word is offered at the 10:00 AM Mass through June. This program is for children age 3 through grade 5. Liturgy of the Word for Children is an opportunity for families to attend Mass together, with children dismissed during the Liturgy of the Word to experience and learn about the readings with a community of other young people. There is Jr. High Intensive Class this evening, October 5th Recently we ed, to all our families, a copy of our Religious Education Handbook. The handbook contains important information such as class dates, sacramental dates, meetings and celebrations as well as dates for Grade Level Masses, Liturgy of the Word for Children and Teen Masses. Also, the frop off and car pool procedure is reviewed and general information covering info from dress codes and discipline to the focus of each grade level curriculum is stated. Please take time, if you have not done so already, to review this information. Hard copies of the handbook will be available on the St. Norbert website under Religious Education. New this year, we are sending the students home with their textbooks. There ar Family Pages in the textbooks we would like our families to read together. They are an excellent resource to parents for sharing their faith with the family and we also think it is helpful to parents to see what their child has been studying in RE class. Please take time each week to review the textbook and any projects or paper work your child may have brought home. We provided red tote bags for students in grades K-5 to carry their books and folders. Please make sure they have it when they come for class each week. Dahm, O.P., Director of Domestic Violence Outreach for the Archdiocese of Chicago Most people have seen and been shocked by the video of NFL star player, Ray Rice, punching and dragging his fiancé out of an elevator. Others have remarked that they are not surprised; this is what domestic violence looks like. What did you expect? Although we can find a report in the news every week about domestic violence, it remains a rather unseen and underestimated crime. It happens behind closed doors and in secret and victims are extremely reticent to come forward. But the facts belie this blindness. The FBI estimates that every 10 to 15 seconds a woman is battered or sexually assaulted in the U.S. The Center for Disease Control reports that one out of every four women is either hit or sexually assaulted by her partner during her life time. That s incredible: one out of four. We might think that domestic violence happens elsewhere but not in our community. But all studies document that the incidence of domestic violence is practically the same in all communities; it makes no difference if you are Black or Hispanic, Caucasian or Asian, rich or poor. Domestic violence exists at the practically the same rate in every community. But how do we Catholics respond to this heinous crime and grave sin? Our bishops, through the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, have written a beautiful pastoral letter entitled, When I Call for Help.{Nov. 12, 2002}. Sadly, it is a well-kept secret. In the first paragraph they write: We must state as strongly and clearly as we can that violence against women, inside or outside the home, is never justified. And then in the final paragraph they state: We must emphasize that no one is expected to stay in an abusive marriage. Unfortunately, most priests have not been prepared to deal with domestic violence. They see it as too controversial or difficult to preach about. They may even think it is rare because victims have not approached them. Some even tell victims they must return to their abusers and accept their cross. Furthermore, few dioceses have any services for victims of domestic violence. For information about what the Archdiocese of Chicago and its parishes are doing go to and click on Domestic Violence Committee. Domestic violence has risen to a new level of awareness and outrage, thanks to extensive media coverage of abuse by some NFL players. May our Catholic Church authorities also recognize their failure to adequately respond to victims and perpetrators and begin to provide the necessary services to demonstrate the compassion of Jesus to those who suffer so terribly in their own homes.
