3 Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time June 14, Embittered Moralizing An Occupational Hazard for Good, Faithful Persons Rev. Ron Rolheiser, OMI In a masterful book on grace, Piet Fransen suggests that we can test how well we understand grace by gauging our reaction to this story: Imagine a man who during his whole life is entirely careless about God and morality. He s selfish, ignores the commandments, ignores all things religious, and is basically consumed with pursuing his own pleasure wine, sex, and song. Then, just hours before his death, he repents of his irresponsibility, makes a sincere confession, receives the sacraments of the church, and dies inside that conversion. What s our spontaneous reaction to that story? Isn t it wonderful that he received the grace of conversion before he died? Or, more likely: The lucky beggar! He got away with it! He got to have all that pleasure and still gets to go to heaven! If we felt the latter emotion, even for a moment, we have never deeply understood the concept of grace. Rather, like the older brother of the prodigal son, we are still seeing life away from God s house as fuller than life inside God s house, are still doing the right things mostly out of bitter duty, and are secretly envying the amoral. But, if this is true, we must be gentle with ourselves. This is an occupational hazard for good, faithful persons. Jesus, himself, expresses this in the parable of the vineyard workers. This parable was addressed to Peter in answer to a question. Peter, on behalf of the other disciples, had just asked Jesus what reward they were going to receive for their fidelity to him. Jesus answers by telling him the story of very rich and generous landowner who goes out one morning and hires workers to work in his vineyard. He hires some early in the morning, promises them a good wage, keeps hiring others as the day progresses, each new group having to work fewer hours than the group before them, and ends the day by hiring a group of workers just one hour before work is to end. Then he tells his foreman to pay everyone a full day s wage. But this leaves the workers who toiled the whole day somewhat bitter. This isn t fair! they protest. We worked the whole day and bore the heat of the sun and this last group worked just one hour. It s unfair that we all receive the same wage! The generous landowner, obviously representing God, is gentle in his response: Friend, didn t you agree to this wage? And isn t a good wage? Are you envious and angry because I m generous? Remember to whom those words are being addressed: Jesus is addressing Peter and, in effect, through this parable, is addressing all good people who are morally and religiously bearing the heat of the day. And Jesus is assuring us that we will be rewarded richly for doing this. But, as the parable makes clear, there s a catch: Simply put, we will be rewarded with heaven and it will be wonderful; but, and this is the catch, we can have everything and enjoy nothing because we are watching what everyone else is getting! I sometimes try to highlight this point rather graphically when I give retreats to priests and religious. I have them consider this scenario: Imagine you live out your life in fidelity to the your vow of celibacy, metaphorically and otherwise bearing the heat of the day and, when you get to heaven, the first person you meet there is Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy. In shock you protest to God: How did he get in here? It s not fair, given the life he lived and the life that I was asked to live! And God, the over-generous landowner, gently replies: Friend, didn t you agree to a life of celibacy, and isn t heaven a wonderful place? Are you envious and angry because I m generous? And, how different this reaction to that of a true saint who, upon meeting someone like this in heaven, would, like the father of the prodigal son, rush over in joy, embrace the person, and say: I m overwhelmed with joy that you made it! Thomas Halik, a Czech writer, suggests that one of the reasons why so many people in the world reject the churches is that they see us as embittered moralizers, older brothers of the prodigal son, doing our religious and moral duties, but bitterly, and criticizing those who don t live like us out of hidden envy. Nietzsche made a similar accusation more than a hundred years ago. Sadly, there s more than a little truth in that accusation. Too often, we are embittered moralizers, secretly envying the amoral and criticizing our world out of bitterness. But that s an occupational hazard for the good and the faithful. Peter and first apostles struggled with it. Why should we be immune? We needn t be immune, but we do need to be honest in admitting that, despite our real goodness and fidelity, this indicates that we are still far from being full saints.

We cannot (by law) publicize the health status of any of our members without their permission. Names for the sick list spoken at Mass and placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family and permission has to be given. We will announce the name at Mass for three weeks. After that, the name will be placed on the bulletin sick list. Names on the bulletin sick list can remain there as long as the person is ill. Please inform the parish of any changes in the person s health. Those wishing to receive a Communion Visit should call the parish office and request it. We will need their name and location, and how long they will need visits. It make take some time to find a Minister of Care who can arrange to visit. Hospitals and Nursing Homes may offer this service through other parishes Ministers. Thank you for helping us to serve you efficiently! 5 Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time June 14, Bulletin Building Blocks - 11th Sunday of Ordinary Time TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION A wedding celebrated in the Eastern Church has a form that was fixed a thousand years ago. In the West, our story is more complicated by constant change and variation. As the world s structures tottered in the ninth century, bishops and priests stepped into the void left by collapsing civil structures. For the first time, marriage was referred to as a sacrament, and wedding ceremonies were to be in public (assuring the free consent of the bride) after an investigation of the couple by a priest. The custom of the blessing of the bridal room diminished, and was finally forbidden in 1012 by the Council of Rouen, although it continued for centuries. In the diocese of Perigueux in France, a ritual from 1827 had the parish priest clad in surplice and stole sprinkling the bridal couple as they stood modestly in their pajamas by the wedding bed. Hosts are in a container in the back of the Assembly Area (on the small table, down the steps from the font). If you require a gluten-free host, take one from the container, and place it in the pyx (small metal container). Then put the pyx in the SILVER BOWL. To receive your host, go to the celebrant/priest for that Mass. He will hand you the entire pyx, and you remove the host yourself. RETURN the pyx to the priest after you take the host out. Be sure to use the Gluten Free pyx, as there may also be containers for Ministers of Care, who visit the homebound. New Life Shelter Please remember the needs of the shelter, a buy one get one free offer might be extra for you but a necessity for a family with nothing. Donations can be left under the coat racks at the North Entrance. Marriage Encounter Weekend Today s readings talk about God s children being plants that grow, flourish and bear fruit. Speaker Amy Florian is a nationally recognized speaker, teacher and director who uses her personal experience along with the best of current research for her engaging and dynamic presentations. She is a liturgy and bereavement consultant who holds a Master s degree in Pastoral Studies and a Fellow in Thanatology (the highest level of certification in the field of death and grief studies.) She founded Corgenius, a company that teaches professionals how to better serve people in times of transition and loss, and teaches in the graduate ministry department of Loyola University in Chicago. Amy has published over 90 articles and two books and has a passion for helping people pray, heal and live fully. Registration is required for this event. Fee of $9 per person includes coffee and donuts, the presentation, and a box lunch. Doors open at 10 am, presentation begins at 10:30 am. Call Marian with questions at (847) Baby Bottle Project Beginning on Mothers Day and continuing through Fathers Day, our church will be participating I the Baby Bottle Project, benefitting the Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material and spiritual support through counseling, clothing and monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year, the three locations together have over 5000 appointments with expectant mothers. By God s grace, the Women s Centers have saved over 33,000 babies and their mothers from abortion since opening in Please take a Bottle home with you, fill it with your spare change, and return it to church the weekend of June 21. Thank You! Can You Help? Help is needed (especially for clean up) for hospitality on Sundays. We hope to continue through summer, but we are short of help. Religious Education & Youth Ministry Children s Liturgy of the Word Children s Liturgy of the Word is offered at the 10:00 AM Mass through June. This program is for children age 3 through grade 5. Liturgy of the Word for Children is an opportunity for families to attend Mass together, with children dismissed during the Liturgy of the Word to experience and learn about the readings with a community of other young people. RELIGIOUS ED NEWS The June Summer Intensive classes begin tomorrow, June 15 th from 1:30-3:45pm. Please make sure your student is timely and prepared for class. There are a few remaining spaces in the July Intensive for grades 6 & 7. Please call the RE office for class availability. Registration forms for the Fall R.E classes are by Monday, June 22 nd. 7 Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time June 14, Parish Council News Father Dan called together a special meeting of the OLB Parish Council on June 2. His intent was to gather input from the Council on the weekday Mass schedule and then bring together both Parish Councils (St. Norbert and OLB). The joint-ppc meeting was subsequently held on June 8 and was attended by Fr. Ron Kalas, Dean for Deanery II-E. Fr. Herne s Mailing Address Bishop Lyne Residence S. Will-Cook Road Palos Park, IL After opening prayer the combined group discussed possible options for a new schedule that would go into effect on July 6. Consensus quickly emerged regarding a preferred schedule that took into consideration the needs of both parishes and the desire to retain as many of the current devotions and practices at both parishes. Father Dan desired to gather input as well from those currently attending the weekday services at both parishes (the 8:30 Masses and St. Norbert s 6:30 prayer service). The group was tasked with drafting a survey to be completed by those impacted most by the changes. More information will be available and announced at the Sunday Liturgy when the weekday schedule is finalized. BLAST? If you like science, and if you like having fun, then come join us this summer at the St. Alphonsus Summer Science Camp! We are offering three sessions for the summer, each with a different theme. Session One will focus on things that fly rockets, airplanes and the like. Session Two is all about nature plants, animals and ecology. Session Three will involve engineering and all things mechanical robots, gears, windmills and more! The camp sessions are all taught by science teacher Mr. Crosswhite, with help from middle school scientists. The Cost for each session is just $89. Sign up for all 3 sessions and save the cost for all three is just $247 when paid in advance. Session Dates: Monday through Thursday, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm Session 1: June Session 2: July 6 9 Session 3: July Extended Day Care will be available to students from 1 to 5 pm for a fee of $25 daily.
