3 2nd Sunday of Advent December 5, Give me that ol time religion well, maybe not. Religions grow, mutate and evolve. Usually the change is so slow as to be imperceptible. Sometimes the change is swift, unexpected and either shocking or amazing depending on one s expectations. The three great monotheistic religions have their roots in ancient Israel; today s Judaism, Islam, and Christianity would find little in common with the religion that started out as polytheist (the practice of Abraham s ancestors), moved through henotheism (there are many gods but we worship only our god) to monotheism. These changes occurred over the course of centuries. All three of the religious traditions moved through a period of militarism. Israel fought the Canaanites and Philistines (ownership of land + religion = violence). Christianity converted the Germanic tribes as it grew and clashed with the Goths, Visigoths, and others as the tribes moved into Christian lands (l + r = v): we see the last remnants in Northern Ireland and the Balkan states. Islam clashed with Christianity as it conquered North Africa, the mid-east, modern Turkey, and made inroads into Spain and France (l + r = v). The Ottoman defeat outside of Vienna in 1683 at least gave us croissant rolls as a reminder. We are very aware of the echoes of Islam vs. the West in today s world. Protestant denominations, many of which were founded as a protest against Roman laxity in doctrine and/or morals, now find themselves accepting same sex unions; and this after centuries of strict interpretation of biblical prohibitions. The change came over a period of less than two decades, amazingly swift for such matters. Our Catholic religion also grows and changes. In the middle ages charging interest on loans was considered usury and was solemnly denounced. As far as I know, these anathemas were never rescinded but the practice came to be tolerated and then accepted. The change was hardly noticed but allowed for today s capitalist economies. Many of our ritual practices were formally changed a half century ago as a result of Vatican II. Those were the externals: the theological thought behind the changes had been brewing for a fair amount of time. Blessed John XXIII pulled the stopper out of the bottle and things started to happen. Benedict XVI has just initiated a change that few within the Church expected. His acceptance of the use of condoms to prevent the spread of diseases is, in fact, monumental. Note that it was published in German, his native tongue. I think he did this to assure that no one could say he slipped in his use of Italian or Latin (unlikely since he is fluent in both languages). It will take months and may take years to find out what the results will be. By the way, the news media are spectacularly untrained and unable to accurately read or interpret Vatican and Papal documents: it s a special skill. Peace, now and always, Prayers for the Sick Each week in our bulletin, we list the names of those who are sick and need our prayers. However, family members often forget to call us to notify us that their loved one no longer needs to be on the Prayer List. As the year goes on, the space slowly fills, and the printing gets smaller and smaller. Next week, we will start afresh, leaving only those names added recently. 5 2nd Sunday of Advent December 5, Bulletin Building Blocks - 2nd Sunday of Advent FEAST OF FAITH Watching for Christ s Coming In the season of Advent, we look to the coming of Christ at the end of time, and we prepare ourselves to celebrate his first coming among us at Christmas. Remembrance of the past is combined with preparation for the future. Memory meets action. In a certain sense, the Mass is an Advent prayer. At the Last Supper, Jesus did not tell his disciples, Never forget what I did for you. Instead, he said, Do this in remembrance of me. He calls us to remember by doing, to combine memory with action. In the celebration of the Eucharist, remembering and doing become one. Jesus is as present in our midst as he was in that upper room, breaking the bread and sharing the cup; but it is a new kind of presence, seen only with the eyes of faith. In the heavenly liturgy, there will be no need of sacraments, for there, celebration is wholly communion and feast (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1136). Here, things are different. We have only glimpses and flashes of the beauty that is yet to be. And yet, in the liturgy, we truly participate in the heavenly liturgy. The Mass is our foretaste of the joys of heaven. Find ways to learn and grow in understanding of our history and the teachings of the Church. Participate in adult formation in your parish and share all that you learn with others (Catholics Come Home Chicago) It s not just about classes and programs adult faith formation consists of many different experiences and opportunities including but not limited to the Liturgy itself through the readings, homily, and music; our yearly parish mission; days of reflection and retreats; various bulletin articles and inserts; ministry formation; adult Confirmation preparation; RCIA; Baptism preparation for parents; and marriage preparation. There are multiple events going on throughout the year that reach out and touch various parishioners in a wide variety of ways such as Advent Season: 11/28-12/24 Once again we are highlighting a different aspect of Advent-Christmas (as we did last year with the Jesse Tree which is in the Social Area) by focusing on the Advent Wreath, the music of the season, and the related scriptures on which this music is based. Come experience the rich symbolism of the Advent Wreath with our Lessons & Carols Advent Service this Sunday, December 5, at 5:00 p.m. with special seasonal music presented by Jessica Koch and the OLB Adult Choir. We will experience Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love through scripture, prayer, and song. The Children s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) on Sundays has a corresponding Advent Wreath activity. On Thursdays our adult faith formation sessions will gather in the chapel at 9:15AM and again at 7:00PM to continue the reflection. Our seasonal meditation will conclude with our Christmas Eve Lessons & Carol service at 10:00PM. The Catholics Come Home venture continues anew during the Advent-Christmas season with new materials on TV, the internet, and YouTube. The invitation is alive and well. Check out the new ads in the Social Area today. 12/5, as well as the bulletin articles. New brochures and prayer cards are available along with our updated Welcome packet for new parishioners or for those looking to return. Remember the best invitation is the invitation that you extend to a friend, neighbor, or family member. Adult faith formation is also experienced through our various Human Concerns ministries, and during Advent The Giving Tree is our focus. Through this activity we provide Christmas gifts and food certificates to families at St. Martin de Porres, our Sharing Parish. Volunteer opportunities include being a coordinator for a group of families (preparing the Angels, ensuring everyone brings their gifts, packing gifts for pick-up by St. Martin s.) Everyone is invited to take an angel and then to be that angel. * * * * * * Beyond the parish while adult faith formation is not only provided at the parish level be it here at the Brook or one of our neighboring parishes, it is also provided by the Archdiocese. Parish Leadership Day -- Feb. 26, 2011 Each year the Archdiocese holds a Parish Leadership Day to provide formation to both clergy and laity who are engaged in parish leadership as staff, council, and commission members. This year there will be a presentation entitled Adults in Our Pews to which I have been invited to be a co-presenter. We ll have more on this event as we get closer to the date. Dcn Peery

7 2nd Sunday of Advent December 5, Religious Education & Youth Ministry Children s Liturgy of the Word: Our Lady of the Brook Children s Liturgy of the Word, offered at the 9:30 AM Mass, is for children age 3 through grade 5. Liturgy of the Word for Children is an opportunity for families to attend Mass together, with children dismissed during the Liturgy of the Word to experience and learn about the readings with a community of other young people. Children then rejoin their families for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. RELIGIOUS ED NEWS Next week we will hold our annual Christmas Pageant on Sunday, December 12, at 1:00pm in St. Norbert church. We have ed, to all our families, our December Newsletter outlining the rehearsal and pageant schedule, costume requirements and other pertinent information regarding the pageant. Please refer to the newsletter for all important details. A hard copy of the newsletter and the At Home With the Faith publication was sent home with the youngest child in each family. Please check your child s take home folder if you have not seen the handouts. We also ask each family to call or us if your child/children will be unable to participate in the pageant. It helps us greatly in our planning and seating. We hope to see most of our families there as well as any parishioners who would like to attend. We welcome all to this wonderful event. Next Sunday is also a grade level mass for the 5 th graders at the 11:30am SN mass. The 5 th grade students are the primary actors in the pageant it will be convenient for them to attend their special mass at 11:30 and then get costumed and ready for the pageant to follow at 1:00pm. The students are asked to contribute unwrapped Christmas presents for boys and girls that will be presented at the Offertory. We would like to thank the R.E. Board for their invaluable assistance in planning and hosting the Advent Wreath project for families of St. Norbert. We also thank many other volunteers whose help was greatly needed and truly appreciated. It was a very nice family event and was appreciated by all in attendance. YOUTH MINISTRY: BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN FAITH & EVERYDAY LIFE WITH TEENS Selected Sunday Evenings 6:30-7:30 Hosted by St. Norbert s Church, we are continuing our wonderful BTG program for high schoolers. Once a month on Sunday evenings throughout the year, following the 5:30 mass, we will join together in St. Norbert s Church Basement in the Vineyard for dinner and discussion. We have pizza and soda, and we discuss things that affect your everyday life and how your faith helps you with these challenges. The evenings are scheduled to last an hour, but we will continue longer if it seems appropriate. You and your peers are integral in deciding what topics would interest high schoolers. Maggie Bruce and Judy Klein are the adults facilitating the program. Jimmy Thomas is our adult leader guiding discussions. 8 Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 8 CATHOLICS COME HOME EVANGELIZATION THROUGH TV ADS Evangelization has always been the mission of the Catholic Church. The call to evangelize first given to us by Christ requires that we proclaim the word of God using every means of communication. In the Church today using the media has become indispensable in bringing the Gospel message into the world through the internet, radio and television. In 2009 Cardinal George collaborated with the Bishops in the Dioceses of Rockford and Joliet on an evangelization initiative using television advertisements. Catholics Come Home Chicago gave us 5 ½ weeks of ads in 3 languages, broadcast on 10 networks that invited Catholics who had drifted from the practice of the faith to come home. As the events of Catholics Come Home Chicago came to an end, we asked parishes to complete a survey on the initiative. We received 440 surveys from Pastors and Parish Contact Persons with over 70% stating that the evangelization initiative was a benefit to their parish in several ways. Our efforts resulted in an increase in Mass attendance, more people participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, a renewed sense of Catholic identity in active parishioners and affirmation for Parish Staffs who have focused on evangelization in their individual parishes. While we have experienced a period of growth in number and strength, we know that the continuation of this movement is the responsibility of every person in every parish. This year there will be NEW Catholics Come Home ads shown on TV from mid-december to Mid- January. Once again, the ads will become a catalyst for faith conversations and moments of evangelization in homes, schools, neighborhoods and places of business all around the Archdiocese. Permanent Deacons play an important role in the Archdiocese of Chicago ONE OF THE GREAT legacies of the Second Vatican Council was its renewal and encouragement of the order of deacons throughout the entire Catholic Church. The Council proclaimed the Sacred Order of Deacons is to be a driving force for the Church s service or diakonia toward the local Christian communities, and as a sign or sacrament of the Lord Christ himself, who came not to be served but to serve.
