3 Feast of the Epiphany January 3, The Incarnation Honors the Flesh Rev. Ron Rolheiser, OMI Canadian poet, J.S. Porter, writes: Honor flesh, its passing, its oblivion. Touch woos the woman; Kiss awakens the princess. One is death. Two is life. One rubbing against another makes fire And fire leaps and jumps like life. One is stone, Two is flesh. The flesh mother and the flesh father make the flesh child. Remember, eternity once in the high fever of creation made flesh life, and only flesh life escapes the doom of everlasting repeating recurring things. Tremble at stone quake at wood. But honor flesh. (The Thomas Merton Poems, Moonstone Press, c1988) Christmas, the mystery of the Incarnation, honors flesh, its goodness and importance, beyond the imagination of even the most rabid materialist, Marxist, or hedonist for the very term incarnation (deriving from the latin IN CARNUS) means in flesh, in carnality, in radical materiality. The incarnation is a multifaceted diamond turning in the sun. It gives off many sparkles, many meanings, and not the least of these is the value of the flesh, the material, the sensual, the physical. Christmas is, at its core, a very physical, sensual mystery. Tragically, this is rarely understood inside of our Christian circles as well as outside of them. Freud once said that you understand things best by looking at them when they are broken. Well, Christian spirituality has broken its real link to the flesh, just as those circles which have most criticized Christianity for doing this (Marxism, hedonism, and science) have also, though in a very different way, done. Christianity today has painted itself (and has been painted by those outside of it) into a corner wherein it is perceived as being anti-materialistic, anti-sensual, anti-body, anti-sexual, anti-physical pleasure, and antierotic. Marxism, hedonism, and science have claimed these areas (the physical, the sexual, the body, the erotic, physical pleasure) as their areas and stand, most times against Christianity, as defenders of the flesh, of its reality, goodness, and importance. This is a sad and tragic critique of a religion which begins with God being born into the flesh. I am not sure how we ve come to this point, nor why in both old and new theologies (the old theologies which were all about the soul and never about the body; and the new theologies which, even as they react to the spiritualism of the old, are perennially uncomfortable with Christ s physical resurrection it s not important whether or not Jesus physical body came out of the tomb! ) there is forever the reluctance, for once and for all, to affirm the God bearing goodness of real flesh, the physical. Somehow we never we end up honoring the flesh. Invariably we end up crassly or subtly devaluing the flesh even when the center of our faith is all about the word made flesh. The criticism made against us on this point by the Marxists, the hedonists, and many scientists and materialists is true. And it s as true of newer spiritualities and theologies as it is of older ones. Nobody takes the flesh seriously enough. In our defense, it should be pointed out the Marxists, hedonists, scientists, and materialists (always so ready to see our weakness here) fare no better in the long run. They too end up missing the full reality of the flesh, not because they take it so seriously, but because they don t take it seriously enough. No more so than we, pathological spiritualists that we are, do they turn to the flesh and find it shimmering with divinity. We miss the flesh for the divine, they miss the divine for the flesh. Both of us miss Christmas. Neither of us finds the word made flesh, God in Carnality Nikos Kazantzakis once said that God became a piece of bread, a cup of cool water, a warm tunic, a hut, and in the front of hut, a woman giving suck to an infant so that we might see him and bow down and worship his many-faced face. (The Last Temptation of Christ, N.Y., 1971, p. 324) The word has become flesh, but to celebrate Christmas properly, to worship God s many-faced face, we must honor flesh.

We cannot (by law) publicize the health status of any of our members without their permission. Names for the sick list spoken at Mass and placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family and permission has to be given. We will announce the name at Mass for three weeks. After that, the name will be placed on the bulletin sick list. Names on the bulletin sick list can remain there as long as the person is ill. Please inform the parish of any changes in the person s health. Those wishing to receive a Communion Visit should call the parish office and request it. We will need their name and location, and how long they will need visits. It make take some time to find a Minister of Care who can arrange to visit. Hospitals and Nursing Homes may offer this service through other parishes Ministers. Thank you for helping us to serve you efficiently! 5 Feast of the Epiphany January 3, Bulletin Building Blocks - Epiphany TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the next few weeks, if you were to stroll around Prague or Budapest or Kraków, you might see curious grafitti scratched in chalk over some doorways: 20 + C + M + B The families dwelling behind those doors have celebrated the Epiphany door blessing. They have gathered before the feast-day meal, probably after Mass, and the head of the family has traced the sign of the cross on the piece of chalk. Standing on a ladder, the leader traces the numbers for the new year, and the letters C M B for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, Latin for May Christ bless this house. The letters also point to the names that tradition has assigned to the mysterious magi, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar although scripture tells us nothing of their number, their country, or their names. The blessing speaks of journeys ended and journeys begun at the doorway, and prays that all journeys be as satisfying as was the magi s. It prays that the house beyond the door have the quality of love and peace that the magi marveled at when they at last arrived in Bethlehem. In some countries where the Soviet Union tried to impose a harsh atheism, the vigor of this household custom survived all efforts to erase Christian customs. In the years of struggle, the chalked blessings were a pervasive sign of defiance, and now in the light of new freedoms, they are a sign of the resilience of our tradition and the fulfillment of the magi s quest for meaning and peace. Extra hands are always welcome in the kitchen along with any home made additions to the Panera donations. There is a sign up sheet in the kitchen each month where volunteers can sign up to help on Sunday... or just show up to help with clean up after you enjoy the treats! 6 Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 6 ADULT FAITH FORMATION In their pastoral letter Our Hearts were Burning within Us: A Pastoral Plan for Adult Faith Formation in the United States, the Bishops identified six dimensions for adult faith formation content: [1] knowledge of the faith, [2] liturgical life, [3] moral formation, [4] prayer, [5] communal life, and [6] missionary spirit. Adult faith formation is as diverse as retreats, days of reflection, sacramental preparation (baptism, confirmation, and marriage), ministerial formation, parish mission, and our speakers series, as well as on-going scripture and catechetical study. Winter Ordinary Time The AFF Offerings Our Sunday Scripture reflection Who Do You Say that I Am? led by Dcn Dennis McAllister will continue on the first and second Sundays of each month in the Library immediately following the 10:00AM Mass. Since we are in Cycle C of our Sunday lectionary series reading the Gospel of Luke, we ll take advantage of this year s very short Ordinary Time to read The Return of the Prodigal Son A Story of Homecoming by Henri J. M. Nouwen. Sessions will be on Thursdays at 9:30AM in the Mother Cabrini Room. See the posters at our entrances. Registrations forms are in the wall racks and on our web site. It s not too soon to say our joint OLB-St. Norbert parishes men s Silent Retreat at Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House is scheduled for February However, there are other weekend options available, if this weekend does not work for you, as well as other types of retreat experiences. Please see the posters on the pillars and the registration forms in the wall racks as you enter the worship area. As in prior years [1] there are NO group allocations, and [2] a registration fee of $85.00 is required to make a reservation. What does this all mean? 7 Feast of the Epiphany January 3, Religious Education & Youth Ministry Children s Liturgy of the Word Children s Liturgy of the Word is offered at the 10:00 AM Mass through May. This program is for children age 3 through grade 5. Liturgy of the Word for Children is an opportunity for families to attend Mass together, with children dismissed during the Liturgy of the Word to experience and learn about the readings with a community of other young people. RELIGIOUS ED NEWS Happy New Year from all of us in Religious Ed! Classes resume this week January 4 th & 6 th. Sunday Intensive will be held January 10 th. Man to Man: January 9 The next Man to Man meeting will be Saturday, Jan. 9 at 8:00 am in Grace Hall at St. Norbert. The speaker will be Fr. The Women's Club is looking forward to celebrating the winter cold with some hot chili on Sunday, January 31 from 4-6:30 pm. Tickets will be sold the weekends of January 16/17, 23/24, and 30/31 after the Masses. Advance tickets will be $5.00 each or $20.00 for a family of 4 or more. Tickets sold at the door will be $7.00 each. There will be many delicious types of chili, homemade desserts, some surprise entertainment by our talented high school students, a 50/50 raffle and games for the children. Help always Needed The holidays are past, but the needs of the poor are still with us. Just a reminder that we continue to collect food in our grocery carts each week (located in the social area), clean clothing and household articles for St. Martins (in the storage area through the double doors in the South vestibule), and laundry products, hygiene products, women's and children's new underwear, socks, warm hats and gloves under the coat racks at the North Entrance. 8 Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 8 December Parish Council, Parish Finance Committee Meeting On the evening of December 15, Father Bob and Father Dan invited the parish councils and parish finance committees from both parishes to an informal gathering and meeting. The purpose was to celebrate the season and also have a short meeting as 2015 draws to a close. The night began with festive spirits, treats and time to socialize. Father Bob then called the group together to pray and go over a few important subjects that need to be addressed as we go forward in developing the future of the Catholic Community of Northbrook. Father Bob reflected on the year past in regards to his health. He told the group that he is continuing treatment. His doctor is optimistic and other than fatigue he is doing well. The meeting then turned to the future. Multiple parishes in the city and suburbs are taking a realistic look at the diminishing numbers, finance concerns and reality of the number of priests we will have going forward. Change is needed, but the course of change is open to different models. Not every model will work for every situation. This led in to a presentation by Michael Nees about the new logo for the Catholic Community of Northbrook which will be introduced and explained to the parishes after the first of the year. Discussion about a joint bulletin with separate sections (to help with communication) and a joint website were also projected. The evening ended with a sense of community which will hopefully continue to grow in 2016 and beyond!
