3 Christ the King November 22, This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. It s a lofty title, but it should force us to stop and ask ourselves: is Jesus even the King of my own life? Do I put him at the center in everything that I do, or do I keep him at the margins? We pray during every Our Father that God s kingdom will come and be made present among us, but that can t happen unless we also pray that it reign within us. One of the constant struggles of our spiritual lives is that while we want the effects of God s kingdom to be present to us, we don t always want to give up the sins that are preventing God s grace from bearing fruit. Somewhere within our hearts, we like the vanity of gossip; we like the comfort of a materialistic lifestyle; we like over-indulging ourselves with rich food and drink. We often try to hide, mask, or rationalize our sins, but if we don t recognize that we have a problem then we prevent God from healing us. One struggle that our culture particularly tries to keep secret, ignore, and rationalize is the use of pornography. In many ways we would all rather turn a blind eye to it we tell ourselves that it doesn t happen in our families, or that it s just part of a phase our kids go through, or maybe that it s a harmless bit of fun. These are all lies that we tell ourselves so that we can continue to ignore the problem. Through the prevalence of internet access, wireless devices, smartphones, tablets, and broadband, our culture also has an unprecedented level of access to this material. We can access it from anywhere and at any time. And we are. Pornography is a $5 billion a year industry, and makes up more than 10% of all websites. On average, our children are first exposed to porn before the age of twelve. In various places throughout the church, you will find copies of a small book called Bought With A Price, written by Bishop Paul Loverde of the Diocese of Arlington. In a particular way, I want to encourage all men who struggle with the use of pornography to pick up a copy. If your heart is in need of God s healing to overcome this sin, do not be afraid. He wants to show you a different way. -Fr. Dan Want to Get Involved? The first weekend of every month we dress the altar. If you or your family would like to help dress the altar on the weekend of Dec. 5/6, please sign up on the sheet in the back. This could be a special way to celebrate birthdays anniversary or any other special event. thank you, Liturgy committee of Our Lady of the Brook New Life Shelter This week the coat racks were "loaded" with the necessities that make life a little easier for the shelter. Cutbacks in government funding have made the "New Life Partners" Cooperative rely strongly on private donations. Our contributions weekly save the shelter funds that would have to be spent on toiletries, underwear, cleaning products and necessities that add up over time. Next week is Thanksgiving... hopefully along with our generosity to WINGS we will be able to send another trunk-load of needed products. Thanks to those who responded so generously.

5 Christ the King November 22, Bulletin Building Blocks - Christ the King TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For good reason, Americans have been ambivalent about kings for many years, even long before George III s troops were sent packing in To say Christ is our King is to make a statement not about our politics, but about the dignity of our own identity. At our baptism, the crown of our head was once slathered (or at last dabbed) with oil while the Church prayed as Christ was anointed priest, prophet and king, so may you live always as his body. To celebrate Christ s kingship, then, is to claim our own identity. Your head was anointed just as Samuel poured oil over David s head. David had his gifts, but he was no prize, and perhaps that might comfort you as you think about your call, out of the messiness of your own life, to stretch into a lifestyle that is marked by worship, by prophetic speech and deeds, and the kingly ability to fashion a world (or at least a patch of it) where relationships are marked by justice, mercy, and cultivation of the good. It is precisely because of this kingly role that our faith community has something to say about the environment, about the dignity of human life, just wages, access to health care and education, the building of peace, and avoidance of war. In a few weeks time we will hymn the coming of the newborn king, but today we sketch out the meaning of his reign, and our own incorporation Ministry Schedule: Nov. 28 & 29, 2015 SAT. 5 pm Sun. 10:00 am Presider Fr. Remandation occurs during the Mass and a light refreshment celebration will follow downstairs in the church basement. We are asking you to Jane Marmet at or Mary Kusswurm at mrk190n@att.net and let us know ASAP if you wish to be remandated. This is necessary so that your certificates and wallet cards are made up for distribution on December 5. Thanking you in advance, Jane and Mary Important Message for Ministers of CARE: It is our year to remandate all ministers who give the Eucharist as part of their ministry. 6 Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 6 The AFF coming attractions: ADULT FAITH FORMATION Advent As part of the seasonal activity we will be looking at Advent with the Saints Daily Reflections by Greg Friedman, OFM. See the posters at our entrances. Registrations forms are in the wall racks and on our web site. We hope you will enjoy the diversity of this year s offerings and will avail yourself of the opportunity as time and circumstances permit to attend one or more of our adult faith formation offerings. Dcn Peery Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) continues to advance our mission of eradicating poverty in economically-distressed communities. Our Holy Father s most recent address to Congress on September 24 of this year instructs us that, Our efforts must aim at restoring hope, righting wrongs, maintaining commitments, and thus promoting the well-being of individuals and of peoples. We must move forward together, as one in a renewed spirit of fraternity and solidarity, cooperating generously for the common good. Pope Francis words resonate deeply with the mission of CCHD. By funding communities through CCHD, we actively work together towards eliminating systemic oppression. Organizations supported by CCHD work to build long-term solutions that will allow future generations to have a dignified quality of life. For example, Mujeres Unidas (Women United) of St. Eulalia has created a women-owned catering worker cooperative that has worked for the past three years to provide healthy food options in the Maywood area. Mujeres Unidas radically changes the way low -income women can participate in the economy both as workers and business owners. They are able to use their talents in cooking and event planning, while maintaining oversight and direction of their cooperative. CCHD supports Mujeres Unidas because it exemplifies shared economic development that builds strong leaders and strong families. The CCHD annual collection is the primary source of funding for CCHD s anti-poverty grants and education programs in Cook and Lake Counties. Fifty percent of the collection s proceeds stays here in our Archdiocese to fight poverty in our communities, and the other 50 percent goes to funding programs nationwide. The collection weekend for CCHD is November Help us defend human dignity and show Christ s charity to those in need. Please encourage the faithful to contribute to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. To learn more about CCHD in the Archdiocese of Chicago, parish resources, and the groups it funds, please visit Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Blase J. 7 Christ the King November 22, Religious Education & Youth Ministry Children s Liturgy of the Word Children s Liturgy of the Word is offered at the 10:00 AM Mass through May. This program is for children age 3 through grade 5. Liturgy of the Word for Children is an opportunity for families to attend Mass together, with children dismissed during the Liturgy of the Word to experience and learn about the readings with a community of other young people. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS A blessed Thanksgiving holiday is wished to everyone from the staff, board and volunteer members of Religious Education. Please be reminded that there are no R.E. classes this week, Monday, 11/23 or Wednesday, 11/25. Please plan to join us Sunday, December 13th for Families of Faith and the RE Christmas Pageant after the 9:30am mass. All are welcome! Our Christmas opportunity for stewardship will be supporting WINGS, Women in Need Growing Stronger. WINGS is a shelter providing help to women and children who are victims of domestic violence. These women and children leave their abusive homes often with only the clothes on their backs. They leave everything behind seeking shelter and safety for themselves and their children. WINGS has wish lists for needed items: toys, household items, personal items, personal apparel, linens, and baby items. Monetary donations are also accepted. Lists of gift choices will be available in the social area beginning the weekend of Nov. 7 and 8, and as an insert in the bulletin. You may choose gifts from the list and bring the NEW UNWRAPPED gifts and place them on the tables provided in the social area beginning Saturday, November 14, through Sunday, December 6. Decorated and labeled boxes will be on the tables for placement in the various categories of NEW UNWRAPPED gifts. We will also be accepting monetary donations to be placed in a labeled donation box. Volunteers will be needed after the Saturday and Sunday Masses through Dec. 6 to help parishioners remove their donated gifts from carry bags and place the unwrapped gifts in the properly labeled boxes. Volunteers are also needed after the Sunday Masses to help transfer the gifts to a secured room and place them in the labeled boxes there. The decorated gift boxes in the social area will remain there through Dec. 6. Ginny and I will be at the 10 am Mass on Sundays, but volunteer help will be appreciated. If anyone can help out at any of the Masses listed above, please contact Ron at vmhartz@ aol.com or Thank you in advance for supporting our parish's Christmas Sharing program for WINGS. Their needs are great. The Christmas Sharing Committee, Ginny and Ron Hartzer Irene and Allan Homberger Worship Space Flowers November 21 & 22 The altar flowers this weekend are in memory of deceased member of the Joyce & Kelly families, donated by family We are offering you the opportunity of donating weekend flowers for the altar. If this is something you would be interested in, please call the rectory office at (847) and we will arrange to order flowers from a local florist. The donation is $75. We will publish in the bulletin the names of the donors and the occasion for which they are donated.
