3 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 9, When the media report on the Catholic Church, I cringe a bit. Whether it is a report of a scandal or a saint, the press shows an amazingly persistent shallowness in its portrayal of the Church and its mission in the world. If not shallowness then either an ignorance that is disturbing or an animosity that is frightening. Occasionally there is a bright spot. Fr. Robert Barron, a priest of our archdiocese, has produced a ten part series entitled, appropriately enough, Catholicism. WTTW has picked up four episodes and will air them on four consecutive Thursday evenings beginning this Thursday, October 13. I had the opportunity to preview one of the episodes at our recent convocation. I was quite impressed and I recommend the series highly. (Ahhh if only WTTW had bought all ten episodes!) Fr. Barron has written an accompanying book of the same title which is already available from purveyors of fine books online and at your local bookstores. The series is an exposition of who we are, what we believe, and what we do. As such it is ideally suited to Adult Faith Formation and, guess what, we will be using the entire series in the Fall of 2012 for our AFF program. So, if you can break away from the standard fare offered by the networks and cable stations, please find the time to watch Catholicism. Tune in to all four episodes. You will definitely find out things you hadn t known. You may well have some things clarified that had been murky in your mind. You could well become excited about being Catholic. AND you might be interested enough to come to our AFF sessions. Peace, now and always, Fishing for Cash Your Fishing for Cash tickets have been mailed. Our Lady of the Brook will hold an on-going Food Drive throughout the month of October. Both the Northfield Pantry in our neighborhood, as well as St. Martin de Porres will be the recipients. Many people are having financial difficulties, due to the state of the economy, the high unemployment rate, and the lack of opportunities. Please donate whatever you can bring a bag of groceries with you to Mass on Sunday! Some of the most-needed items include canned fruit and vegetables, soup, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. Baby items such as diapers and formula are always needed. Cut this out as a reminder put it with your shopping list! Thank you for your support! 5 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 9, Bulletin Building Blocks - 28th Sunday of Ordinary Time FEAST OF FAITH Agnus Dei After the sign of peace, the priest breaks the host into pieces, and prepares the patens or plates of hosts for the assembly. In the early church, the breaking of the bread was the name given to the entire Eucharistic liturgy, so central was this action to the meaning of the Christian life. For just as the one bread is broken and given to many people, the many are made one in receiving it. During this ritual action, we sing an ancient litany, calling on Jesus as the Lamb of God the words used by John the Baptist when he pointed to Jesus walking beside the Jordan River (John 1:29, 36). In calling Jesus the Lamb of God, John was already pointing to the death that Jesus would die: in giving his life, Jesus would become the Paschal Lamb of the new covenant. During the Mass, when we call on the Lamb of God, we call to mind his self-sacrificing love, his blood poured out for us, and we ask this compassionate Lord for mercy and peace. This week, we explore what Communion and the Concluding Rites are about. Our great prayer of praise and thanksgiving leads through the Lord s Prayer, our petition for daily bread, into the action of Communion. We sing together even as we rise and move forward in procession to the altar. We must move to receive Communion since the Eucharist is transformative it demands action of us, internal as well as external. We do not receive the sacrament in silence, but with a dialogue that is a profession of faith: The Body of Christ. Amen. The Blood of Christ. Amen. Our Amen is also a prayer that we may become what we receive, the Body of Christ, living and active in the world. So it makes sense that after Communion we are dismissed not just let out, but sent forth with a mission to announce the gospel of the Lord. This leave-taking is joined to a blessing, a prayer for God s continuing protection as we go out on our way. Participate in adult formation in your parish and share all that you learn with others (Catholics Come Home Chicago World Religions Judaism & Islam with Guest Speaker: Jerry Leitner Our 2011 Fall offering begins this Thursday, October 13, at 9:15 and again in the evening at 7:00PM running for the next five weeks. It continues along the lines Fr. Tom started with The Birth of Monotheism in 2009 and last year s video A History of God. This year we are going to have a guest speaker, Jerry Leitner, who will be speaking to us on World Religions beginning with a presentation on How to Talk about Religion and then two sessions each on Judaism and Islam for a total of five sessions beginning October 13 and ending November 10. Registration forms are available at the exits of the church. Catholicism: Adult Formation Program and Series As a special preview, selections from Fr. Robert Barron s new series will be airing on WTTW on four Thursdays beginning13th from 8-9PM October and rebroadcast on Sunday afternoons at 4:00PM. Women s Day of Reflection Saturday, October 22, with Sr. Kathy Sherman We have set a date for another Day of Reflection for the women of our parish: Saturday, October 22 to be held at Techny with guest speaker Sr. Kathy Sherman. Our theme will be Finding the Nearness and Mystery of God Through Prayer and Music. Registration forms are available at the exits of the church. MUSIC MINISTRY ADDITION OF NEW TRANSLATION OF SUNG SANCTUS We continue to phase in the new translations of the sung parts of the liturgy with the addition this weekend of the Sanctus (Holy, Holy). Only the first line of text is different: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts. The rest of the text is unchanged. The Sanctus is one of the Eucharistic Acclamations and is given very high priority to be sung by ALL in the liturgy. Please continue to use the trifold worship aid to follow and sing these new settings, although we are not yet using any spoken segments from the trifold. BELL CHOIR PRACTICES BEGIN OCTOBER 19th Reserve the Date! Rehearsals for the OLB Bell Choir will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 19th and run from 6:30-7:15 pm. 7 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 9, Religious Education & Youth Ministry Children s Liturgy of the Word Children s Liturgy of the Word is offered at the 9:30 AM Mass September through June. This program is for children age 3 through grade 5. Liturgy of the Word for Children is an opportunity for families to attend Mass together, with children dismissed during the Liturgy of the Word to experience and learn about the readings with a community of other young people. Children then rejoin their families for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Each session consists of a sharing of the scriptures in a children s format, or conversation, and activity in response. Each Sunday the children will have a take home to share with their families. If you have a child attending the Children s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW), we would like to have you register them with us so that we can be in contact. We are also looking to link together families with children in CLOW so that you can be a support for one another. Please drop by the Social Area after Mass and meet that Sunday s CLOW catechist and register with us. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS There are no religious education classes Monday, October 10 th or Wednesday, October 12 th. Next Sunday, October 16 th, there is Sunday Intensive for the Jr. High students. Sisters of Providence invite women to explore religious life Catholic women ages who are seeking to deepen their faith and explore religious life are invited to participate in the Fall Discernment Retreat hosted by the Sisters of Providence Oct at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. The theme for the weekend ~ Living the Legacy NOW! ~ coincides with the unique opportunity to participate in the Saint Mother Theodore Guerin Fest. Participants can attend various presentations throughout the weekend, but also they will have an opportunity to meet and connect with Sisters of Providence, share prayer, meals and small-group conversation with other young women exploring the call to religious life as a Sister of Providence. Housing, meals and Fest registration will be provided for retreat participants. For more information, contact Sister Jenny Howard, at or at Pumpkin Decorating Featured at NBK Farmers Market Closing Day The Northbrook Farmers Market season is drawing to a close which means it's time for the third annual Li'l Pumpkin Day Wednesday, Oct. 12. Children may choose a free locally grown pumpkin from the Sunset Foods' Huckster wagon and then decorate it with help from Mustard Seed Nursery School and Northbrook Community Nursery School staff, starting at 9 a.m. while supplies last. Children of all ages who wear a costume to the market will receive an early Halloween treat. When was the last time you bought something for 50 cents? Warm spiced apple cider and hot chocolate with whipped cream will be available for 50 cents a cup. A chef from Sur La Table, which is opening next month in Northbrook Court, will share her expertise with inseason recipes, tips and autumn entertaining ideas. RC Juggles Entertainers will offer spooky balloon creations and Ronald McDonald will pay a surprise visit to the market.

Mealtime when you live alone There is a big difference between dining and eating, and for those who live alone, that difference is felt every day. Most people who live alone turn on the television for company and make their meal presentation as simple as possible, but it doesn t have to be that way. Here are some ideas to make mealtime more pleasurable for those who live alone: If you eat your meals alone at home, treat yourself to a special solo dining experience and learn to enjoy the solitude. Prepare a wonderful meal, play your favorite music, set a beautiful table and use your loveliest dishes. Daniel Halpern, in the book How to Eat Alone, talks about the smells and anticipation that we can experience even when our table is set for just one: Raise your glass in honor of yourself. The company is the best you ll ever have. When eating in a restaurant, avoid the inclination to hide in a corner or bury your head in a book. Ask to be seated in the front where you can see and be seen. Then you can enjoy the show as well as the meal! If you live in an apartment and wish to enjoy more meals with others, get creative! Bring dessert to a neighbor; it s less of a commitment than an entire meal and a nice way to get to know someone. Or organize a tasting party in which each participant puts a tv tray outside his door with sample sizes of a favorite food. Then for one hour, neighbors sample each others favorites while chatting in the hall. Even for a party of one, food can be exciting and enjoyable. Make each of your dining experiences the very best possible. Hand-Carved Olive Wood Gifts from the Holy Land Proceeds benefit Catholic schools in the Holy Land. There are more than 600 Christian families living in Bethlehem and are completely dependent on carving olive wood figurines for their livelihood. The recent clashes in the Middle East have stopped the tourism industry in Bethlehem, causing most of these families serious harm in earning their living and forcing many of them to leave their homeland. Emptying the land of Christ from Christians can have tragic consequences on the Holy sites. Issam from Star of Bethlehem Group came to the United States with a mission to help those families by selling their beautiful religious hand crafts. The cost of goods goes to benefit the Christian carvers to keep them working in the spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, the profit from sales goes directly to the needy Catholic schools and clinics in the Holy Land.
