3 Second Sunday of Ordinary Time January 19, Life in the rectory of a one priest parish poses an interesting set of questions and problems, and since October I have been coping with them. Most are easily taken care of, but one question that has been at the back of my mind is, What happens if something happens? Well something happened on Friday, Jan. 10. I fell, lacerated my head, and wound up in the emergency room. I was kept overnight for observation. So, what happened at the parish while I was having this adventure? OLB s Food Outreach One Shopping bag of food Per household Per month. As I was being pushed into the ambulance, someone asked me if there was anyone she could call. The parish office was already closed ( so I thought) so there was no reason to call the parish. I remembered Deacon Peery s number and told the lady to call. About two hours after the incident, while I was still in the ER, one of the nurses came in and said that I had a phone call and asked if I could take it. It was Peery, and after he commented on my inability to levitate (which was to be expected) he told me that everything was being taken care of, that I should not worry about the weekend, and that my plan for the weekend should be to rest and recover. Amy had kenneled Seti, the Dog. (Ask her how to put a 150-lb dog into a Prius. Answer: brute force.) Eva, even though out of town, was arranging for an extra priest to help cover Sunday and if none were available that one or more Communion Services would be conducted by the deacons, and Teresa would take care of opening the church and locking up on Saturday evening and Sunday. The only things not covered were Confessions on Saturday morning and opening the building for the environment committee on Saturday afternoon. Since no one on staff can hear Confessions, I wasn t worried about that (rule: don t worry about things you cannot change); and frankly, no one had remembered that the environment committee was scheduled my apologies. So that answers the question about what happens if something happens. Our staff took charge and the parish ran smoothly. My thanks to all of them for their dedication to OLB and their handling of the situation. Peace, now and always, Congratulations to the January Fishing For Cash winners. $100 Mary Kusswurm and Georgina Winters $300 Anne Tulig Three more drawings!! You still have a chance. 5 Second Sunday of Ordinary Time January 19, Bulletin Building Blocks - Second Sunday of Ordinary Time TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The symbols and actions of baptism evolved around the experience of adults dying to old patterns of life and rising from the waters of baptism as new creations. As for newborn babies, at first it was desired to wait until the following Easter, when they could be baptized, anointed with chrism, and given a taste of the Eucharist in association with adults. The Church was always willing to baptize adults in emergency situations outside the Easter timetable, and in time, since infancy itself was a life-threatening situation, the baptism of babies became commonplace. As with the emergency adult baptisms, it was required that parents bring the child, as soon as health was recovered, to the bishop for the full menu of sacraments. The very real fear of death for infants thus created a situation in which the three sacraments drifted apart from each other, and away from their original, adult celebration at Easter. Today, at last, we know a great deal about how our practices evolved. This knowledge is reshaping how we celebrate Easter, how we receive adult faith, and how we structure the faith journey of children. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. This would be part of the 45 th Anniversary Speakers Series. Hopefully these opportunities will give you a rich cross section of possibilities for renewing and deepening your faith throughout the year. A special thanks to the wonderful "Knit Wits" who made some warm hats and mittens for the women and children. They sent this poem as a thank you: The staff and residents at the Women's Shelter Dear Hands of Love Lady: Thank you for the hat and gloves, Made with love to keep me warm. It s feeling that normal daily challenges are magnified one hundred times more because low-income persons are much more powerless because of the structures that oppress them. Help empower the poor during Poverty Awareness Month by taking part in the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). CCHD funds organizations like Northwest Side Housing Center who have helped organize the Montclare Senior Residences where their victories have improved living conditions and increased safety for over 300 low-income seniors.
