3 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time November 16, AN EARTHY VIEW OF THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS REV. RONALD ROLHEISER, OMI In his autobiography Nikos Kazantzakis tells the story behind his famous book, Zorba the Greek. Zorba is partially fiction, partly history. After trying unsuccessfully to write a book on Nietzsche, Kazantzakis experienced a certain emotional breakdown and returned to his native Crete for some convalescence. While there he met a man of incredible energy and vitality. The Zorba-character in the book is based on this man s life; never before in his life had Kazantzakis been so taken by the life and energy of another human being. But mortality doesn t make allowances for that. Zorba eventually died and his death very much disillusioned Kazantzakis: How can such exceptional vitality simply die? And what happens to it, does it simply disappear as if it had never been? What happens at death to all the color, energy, life, love, and humor that a human being has embodied? Kazantzakis wrote Zorba the Greek as an attempt to give some immortality to the wonderful energy that an exceptional man had embodied. Zorba cannot be dead. It made for a great book and a great movie, but is that really what makes for immortality? Does simply remembering somebody or publicly celebrating his life make him alive? And when someone dies, what does happen to that very unique and wonderful energy, vitality, love, color, and humor that a person embodied during his or her life? Several days ago, I was at a wake service for a woman whom I had never met. The formal prayer service was followed by a half-dozen eulogies delivered by her family. They were wonderful, warm, witty, colorful, and full of humor. As these stories were told she became alive again to everyone in the church. We all smiled and laughed and the sadness of her leaving was eclipsed for the moment (and partly forever) as the color and vitality of her life were again made alive for us. And we weren t just remembering her. We were reminding each other that she was still with us. It s the same for everyone who dies. They remain with us in more than memory. And it s not just some purified spirit of theirs, washed clean in death, that remains. Their unique color stays too: I think, for instance, of my own family. We ve had to mourn the loss of a number of our members, but we re not only nurtured by the gift that each person s life and virtue was for us, we re still fed by the unique color each of them embodied. They are still with us, as is their color. Our family legends abound about those whom we have lost: stories about my dad s unique way of combining the Serenity Prayer with Murphy s Law in an exasperated expression: Just now! ; about my mother s incapacity to find a place to begin a story without having to first go back to Genesis In the beginning ; about my deceased sister s love of chocolate and her concomitant love for deflating what was pompous; about my deceased brother s proclivity to lecture the entire planet on social justice; about my deceased brother-in-law s love for cooking sausages and laughingly inquiring about the aesthetic condition of your suspenders; and about a deceased Uncle s habit of lighting up a cigarette and getting a mischievous gleam in his eye as a prelude to telling a thoroughly wicked story. 5 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time November 16, Bulletin Building Blocks - 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time All Christians in both East and West embraced the care of the sick as essential to church life. In the West, the importance of the visit of the priest is stressed, while in the East, the sick person is brought to the church for a full Liturgy of the Word. Some, such as the Armenians, even call it the Ritual of the Lamp, since the oil is poured out of the lamp by which the Word is read. This may be why Eastern Christians sometimes anoint the sick with this oil, since the trip to church might kill them. Our tradition in the West also unfolded in monasteries, where it was possible for infirm monks to be attended with a full and beautifully consoling liturgy. In 950 the monks of St. Alban s Abbey in Mainz produced a ceremonial book that was instantly a pastoral hit everywhere. There were two lengthy rituals for the sick, one an extended vigil, and the other a liturgy of anointing that included Communion under both species. While this ritual was a house formula for monks, it is easy to see how monks who had the care of parishes desired to serve their parishioners in a similar way. The first form included the chanting of penitential psalms, and the second form required a confession beforehand. Find ways to learn and grow in understanding of our history and the teachings of the Church. Participate in adult formation in your parish and share all that you learn with others (Catholics Come Home Chicago) In their pastoral letter Our Hearts were Burning Within Us: A Pastoral Plan for Adult Faith Formation in the United States, the Bishops identified six dimensions for adult faith formation content: [1] knowledge of the faith, [2] liturgical life, [3] moral formation, [4] prayer, [5] communal life, and [6] missionary spirit. Adult faith formation is as diverse as retreats, days of reflection, sacramental preparation (baptism, confirmation, and marriage), ministerial formation, our parish mission, and our speaker series, as well as on-going scripture and catechetical study. This year Fall Ordinary Time Our Sunday Scripture reflection Who Do You Say that I Am? led by Dcn Dennis McAllister continues on the first and second Sundays of each month in the rectory conference room at 9:15AM followed by the 10:00AM Mass. Our Greatest Gifts Speakers Series continues to evolve so that as speakers are lined up, we will announce their dates and topics: On Saturday, November 15, from 8:30 to Noon Nancy Hoel will return for our Women s Morning of Reflection to kick-off the Advent Season. Advent As part of the seasonal activity we will be looking at Advent-Christmas portion of Handel s Messiah both the scripture and the music. Sessions are on Thursdays, at 9:15AM in the MCR. Christmas Sharing As you know, our new opportunity for stewardship at Christmas will be supporting WINGS, Women in Need Growing Stronger, a shelter providing help to women and children who are victims of domestic violence. These women and children leave their abusive homes often with only the clothes on their backs. They leave everything behind seeking shelter and safety. WINGS, has wish lists for toys, household items, personal items, and baby items. Financial donations will also be accepted. Lists of gift choices will be available in the social area, beginning the weekend of Nov. 8 and 9, and as an insert in the bulletin, You may choose gifts from the list and bring the new unwrapped gifts and place them on the tables provided in the social area beginning Saturday, November 15, through Sunday, December 7, Thank you in advance for supporting this important need and for making their Christmas special. 7 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time November 16, Religious Education & Youth Ministry Children s Liturgy of the Word Children s Liturgy of the Word is offered at the 10:00 AM Mass through June. This program is for children age 3 through grade 5. Liturgy of the Word for Children is an opportunity for families to attend Mass together, with children dismissed during the Liturgy of the Word to experience and learn about the readings with a community of other young people. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Our 3 rd grade students will celebrate their Thanksgiving Feast Prayer Services this week during their respective class periods. This annual celebration corresponds with their curriculum studies of the Mass. They gather in church to pray and have their food items blessed before sharing the feast together as a family of God. Thank you to all who participated in our food drive. The items collected will be a grateful addition to the pantry. Our students have been visiting the food pantry at St. Norbert during their class time. Gracious and dedicated parish volunteers show the students how to organize and stock the pantry while sharing that the goal of their efforts to is to help and serve others. Mark your calendar and save December 7 th, 1:00pm for the upcoming Christmas pageant. Rehearsal will be held at Saturday, December 6 th at 10:30am in church. Please make time to attend this heartwarming, sincere reminder of the true meaning of Christmas presented by the children. Northbrook Community Thanksgiving Celebration Our Northbrook Community Thanksgiving Celebration will be held at the Brook on Wednesday evening at 7PM followed by fellowship. Fr. We are looking to all parishioners to donate craft items and baked creations for this sale. You can bring the items to the Worship Center on Saturday, December 13 th, between 12:00PM and 4:00PM. 8 Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 8 October 2014 Cardinal s Letter Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has come to the aid of communities nationwide for over forty years in an effort to eradicate poverty. During World Youth Day, on July 25, 2013, Pope Francis told us, Never tire of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity. The CCHD puts these words into action by funding housing, education, the development of job opportunities and other social-justice initiatives. Projects supported by the CCHD go beyond providing for basic needs. They work to build healthy, sustainable futures for communities. For example, for several years now, the Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation (PBMR) has been transforming the way communities engage in restorative justice practices to develop a culture of nonviolence in Chicago s South Side. The PBMR has also developed a strong leadership model for at-risk youth to facilitate peace circles in areas of high conflict. In addition, the PBMR assists families to address unjust legislation surrounding juveniles without parole. The heart of the PBMR is about building human relationships; it carries on Christ s mission to bring glad tidings to the poor liberty to captives sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free (Luke 4:18). This Collection is the primary source of funding for the CCHD s anti-poverty grants and education programs. Collection funds offer new hope each year to those living in poverty throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Fifty percent of the Collection s proceeds stay here in our archdiocese to fight poverty in our communities and defend the dignity of our neighbors, and the other 50 percent go to funding programs nationwide. This year, the Appeal Weekend for the CCHD is November 15 16, and the Collection Weekend is November Please help us defend human dignity and show Christ s charity to those in need. So what does happen at death to that very unique energy, vitality, color, and humor that a person has embodied? Alfred North Whitehead suggests that it s immortalized in the consequent nature of God. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin assures us that nothing will be lost and everything will be in some way preserved, right down to the lives of our pets. Our Christian doctrine on the Communion of Saints tells that our loved ones are still alive and that someday we will be face to face with them again. I don t doubt the truth of these assertions, but they can seem pretty abstract when our hearts are saddened and aching at the memory of a loved one who has died. Being alive in our memories is not a sufficient form of immortality and being alive in God s memory can seem too abstract to bring much consolation. I don t doubt that our loved ones are alive in God s consequent nature or that they are alive inside the communion of saints, but I believe something more, based on how our memories of their unique color affects and nurtures us here on this side. I believe that what they so wonderfully and uniquely embodied here on earth is still going on, happening on the other side. I suspect there are more than white clouds, harps, and floating angels in heaven, but that heaven is rife with wit, color, humor, and thoroughly wicked stories because whenever we recall these about our deceased loved ones their memory turns warm and nurturing.
